VENTILATING RIDGE ROLL FOR ROOFS Filed Dec. 10, 1951 1 I2 I2 30 I4 L 14 I6 I\ I6 1 ,8 John Bonforre INVENTOR.
BY WW EM Patented Jan. 13, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VENTILATING RIDGE ROLL FOR ROOFS John Bonforte, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Application December 10, 1951, Serial No. 260,896
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in attic ventilators, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a ventilating ridge roll for roofs, the ridge roll being of weather-proof construction and facilitating efiicient ventilation of the attic, particularly on buildings having a hip roof where ventilation is otherwise diflicult if not impossible.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simple, durable construction, in its ef icient operation, and in its adaptability for installation on building roofs of various types.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of the roof showing the invention installed thereon;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken substantially on the plane of the line 3--3 in Figure 2.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a ventilating ridge roll which is designated generally by the reference character It and embodies in its construction a pair of spaced base members 12 having divergent lower portions it which are adapted to be secured by suitable fastening elements [6 to a roof structure 18 at the opposite sides of the ridge, the base members l2 being provided at their upper edges with outwardly angulated flanges 20.
A plurality of upstanding supports 22 are pro vided at longitudinally spaced points between the base members I2, each support including a pair of side flanges 24 and a top flange 26, as is clearly shown in Figure 3.
The several supports 22 carry an elongated cap member 28 having a flat intermediate portion 28' secured by spot welding, or the like, to the top flanges 26 of the supports, the cap member 28 also having arcuate side portions 28" which extend outwardly and downwardly to a plane substantially below the flanges 28 and terminate in outturned flanges 39.
Finally, vertical screen panels 32 are secured by spot welding, or the like, 3 1 to the inner surfaces of the base members l2, and extend upwardly beyond the flanges 2b to the underside of the flat intermediate portion 28' of the cap member 28, it being noted that the side flanges 24 of the support 22 are secured by spot welding, or the like, 35 to the screens 32 as well as to the base members I2.
The sheathing material of the roof is omitted at the ridge so as to provide a longitudinally extending opening 38 in the ridge, through which air may circulate from the attic and outwardly through the screens 32 to promote proper ventilation. It is to be noted in this connection that by virtue of the flanges 26 on the base members 12 and by virtue of the fact that the side portions 28" of the cap member 28 extend below the flanges 20, the device is entirely water-proof even if a stream of Water were delivered horizontally against it.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the claimed as new is:
A ventilating roll structure for roof ridges comprising in combination a pair of spaced base members having outwardly angulated flanges at the upper edges thereof, upstanding supports provided at longitudinally spaced points secured to said angulated flanges and extending therebetween, pairs of substantially parallel side flanges secured to said supports, top flanges secured to said supports, a cap member carried by said top flanges and including an intermediinvention, what is ate portion spaced upwardly from said angulated flanges and downturned side portions extending outwardly and downwardly to a plane substantially below the angulated flanges, and screens secured to and positioned between said base members and said side flanges and extending upwardly to the intermediate portion of the cap member, said cap member having out-turned flanges at the lower edge thereof extending below said angulated flanges to shield said screens.
