Description

Sept. 9, 1952 -J. R. HUBBARD BADGE Filed Dec. 5, 1949 mvan'oa JOHN R. HUBBARD by M (1% ATTORNEYS FIG. 7
Patented Sept. 9, 1952 BADGE iIOhn'R. Hubbard,- Yellow Springs,-hio; assignor to Antioch Bookplate Company; Y'ellowisprin'gs,
'0hi0,-a corporation of Ohio Application December 5, 1949;iseriarm.1's1;2s9
This invention relates to improvements in markers or tags. More'particularly,'it relates to tongued badges having a multiplicity of uses. Still more "particularly, it relates to convention badges.
--Badgesmust be readily attachable andd'etachable, and at the same time be capable of gripping with sufficient firmness and tenacity to insure against accidental dislodgment and loss. .Fu'rther, the badges must be capable of beingwri'tten upon.
A principal object of the invention, therefore, is to provide animproved badge or tag possessing the above characteristics and which is further characterized by extreme simplicity of form and cheapness of manufacture.
It is a further object to provide a badge of design whereby either the flap or the badge proper may be the face adapted for viewing.
It is a further object to provide a badge capable of attachment against accidental loss in a variety of ways.
The invention resides further in the novel structural details and forms illustrated in the attached drawing in which:
Figures 1, 2 and 3 are face views of several different forms of tags made in accordance with my invention;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary face view showing a pin as securing means;
Figures 5 and 6 show methods of attaching badges so that they are prominently displayed; and
Figure 7 shows the use of the badge as a bookmarker.
With reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, the tag therein illustrated consists of a flat body member I0 which may suitably be made of cardboard, or suitable plastic material such as phenol-formaldehyde resin, vinyl acetate polymers, phthalic acid base resins, and like materials.
Said body member III is provided towards its upper end with apertures II and I2 connected by a slot I3 which defines the free edges of a tab I4.
It will be noted that in Figures 1 and 2 the slot I3 is comprised of a horizontally extending portion and two vertically extending portions which vertically extending portions each termihate in one of the apertures II-I2.
In the absence of a pocket the tag as shown in Figure 4 may be pinned to the cloth. Under these circumstances, one leg I5 of a safety pin I6 passes from the rear of body member I0 through aperture I2 across the top of tab I4, and
5 Claims. (0140-15) 'to'the'ba'ckofbody I ll "throughap'erture I'I With the leg I I of the pin 16 passed through the'cloth and the two legs locked togethen 'the badgeis worn on a pocket with" either thebody member Ill orthe tab I 4- or both portions expose'd.
In the embodiment of the inventiomshown in Figure 5jthebadge bf Figure l-i's "shown attached to a pocket button by' means-of slit I8" and ape'rture I 9 in thecen'tral top portion of the'badge.
The preferred mode of attachment and the one for which the badge has several specially designed features is shown in Figure 6 with relation to the badge of Figure 2. In this embodiment of the invention, the badge member I0 is shown within the pocket with the tab I4 in front of the pocket.
The badge grips the fabric with suflicient firmness to withstand any normal disengaging force because of the two upwardly extending tips 20 and 2|. It will be noted that the tip 20 is formed by the intersection of the vertically extending edge defining the aperture l2, and that similarly the tip 2| is formed by a vertically extending edge bordering the slot and an upwardly extending edge bordering aperture I I. These tips 20 and 2| serve the same useful purpose when the tab I4 is inside as well as outside the pocket.
While the dimensions of the apertures II and I2 and slot I3 and of the tab I4 may vary without departure from the invention, it has been found that for general purposes dimensions of all parts corresponding to those in Figures 1, 2 and 3 which are shown in actual size will be found suitable.
The faces of the badges are intended to be written upon in either pencil or ink and if prepared from resin material may be erasable.
The use of the erasable badge of Figure 3 as a bookmark is illustrated in Figure 7. In this figure tab I4 is illustrated as behind a leaf of a book 30 with the body member III in front of the leaf.
It will be understood that this invention is susceptible to modification in order to adapt it to different usages and conditions and, accordingly, it is desired to comprehend such modifications within this invention as may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A badge comprising a body of sheet material having therein a tab having free edges thereof defined by a pair of upper opposed apertures tures, said tab being joined to said body only 7 along an upper line between the said apertures, a lateral edge defining a said slot and an upper edge defining a said aperture each extending upwardly to an intersection thereof and terminating into an upwardly extended pointed tip.
3. A badge comprising a body of sheet material having therein a tab having five free edges thereof defined by a pair of upper opposed apertures and a continuous slot having vertical and horizontal portions joining the apertures, said tab being joined to said body only along an upper line between the said apertures, a free edge definin a vertically extending slotportion and a free edge defining a said aperture,
each extending upwardly to an intersection thereof and terminating in an upwardly extended pointed tip. 7 I 4. In a badge comprising a bodyof sheet material having a tab joined to the body along the line between a pair of opposed apertures which 4 together with a slot connecting the apertures define the free edges of the said tab, the structure comprising an upwardly extended pointed tip portion of said tab formed by the terminal intersections of an upwardly extending edge bordering a said slot and an upwardly extending edge bordering a said aperture.
5; In a badge comprisinga body of sheet material having a quadrilateral tab joined to the body only along the line between a pair of opposed inwardly disposed apertures which together with a slot connecting the apertures define the free edges of the said tab, the structure comprising a substantially vertically extending tip portion of said tab formed by the intersection of a vertically extending edge bordering a said slot and an upwardly extending edge bordering said aperture.
