6 Claims.
This invention relates to means for applying cosmetics to the lips and it is the general object of the invention to provide a simple and inexpensive device which is operable by anyone quickly and correctly to appl rouge or other suitable cosmetic material to the lips to produce a cosmetic covering of any desired ar tistic shape. More particularly, it is the object of the invention to provide an applicator in the form of a plate which may be held between the thumb and the forefinger and pushed between the lips. When thereupon the lips are pressed against the plate and the plate is Withdrawn, it is found that perfect impressions are left on the lips. Another object is to provide an ap plicator which is shaped to accommodate any width of mouth opening and yet will leave a perfect impression of the desired shape. Still another object is to provide: an applicator which is self-centering or which may be guided and centered by the tongue correctly to locate the impression on the lips. Finally, it is the object of the invention to provide a cosmetic applicator which is so inexpensive that it may be thrown away after having been once used.
These and other objects of the invention, together, with the many advantageous features thereof will be better understood after perusal of the following detailed description and by referring to the accompanying drawing in which preferred forms of the invention are illustrated.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a face view of a device embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the device taken-on line 2--2 of Fig. l in the direction of the arrow;
Fig. 3 illustrates the manner in which the device is applied to the lips;
Fig. 4 is. a face view of a somewhat modified form of the invention;
Fig. '5 is a cross-sectional view through the vertical center of Fig. 4; and
a removable, protective covering thereon.
As shown in the drawing, the device of the invention consists of a single, thin piece of suitable light and moisture-proof material which at one end along the center line thereof is shaped to provide a handle or finger-piece I. Substantially one-half of the body portion 2 of the applicator, adjacent this handle, is rectangular in shape and the side edges 3, 4 are inwardly tapered toward the center line of the plate, as indicated at 5, B in the drawing. The body por- Fig. 6 is a face view of the applicator having tion of the applicator is, along the center line thereof, shown indented to form a substantially semi-circular groove 1 extending inwardly from the handle for the purpose which will now be described. The surface of the applicator is about this groove shown covered with a layer of cosmetic material 8 and it is important to note that this covering does not extend entirely to the edge of the applicator but that a relatively wide margin I0 remains uncovered.
When it is desired to apply cosmetic to the lips, it is merely required to grip the handle I between the thumb and forefinger and to push the applicator into the partly opened mouth, substantially as indicated in Fig 3. This movement is continued until the inclined edges 5, 5 touch the sides of the mouth. The lips are then lightly compressed and the applicator slowly withdrawn, leaving a substantial film of cosmetics of uniform thickness on the upper lip which film, as the applicator is withdrawn becomes pressed against the lower lips to spread uniformly over this lip also. This completes the operation and because the lips have been evenly and smoothly covered, it is found that no inspection in a mirror or additional spreading operations are necessary. When, at the time the applicator is completely inserted, it is swung upward, as indicated in dotted outline in Fig. 3, additional rouge is applied to and above the upper edge of the lip, leaving an uncovered portion at the center and so adding distinction to the appearance of the lips.
It was above stated that an uncovered margin IE! is left along the edges of the applicator and the advantage of this construction is that no cosmetic material will accumulate in the corners of the mouth as the applicator is inserted and withdrawn, to form lumps which subsequently will spread, leaving unsightly blotches about the corners.
The purpose of the indented center portion of the applicator is, as above explained, to provide a distinct division between the right and left portions of the deposited film in. cases where the styles dictate that such division should appear. The exact shape and length of this groove would, of course, vary to suit individual preference. But, where uniform covering is pre ferred, this groove may, of course, be omitted.
It was above stated that the applicator is selfcentering and it is now seen that the tapering side edges render the device substantially selfcentering. In addition, it may be found advantageous to cut av circular groove H into the pointed end of the plate. When such groove is provided, it is found that the tip of the tongue may be pushed thereinto, when the applicator enters the mouth, to insure perfect centering of the device.
Other styles of cosmetic lip covering may modify the shape of the film-carrying portion of the applicator. It is, for instance, by many desired to show distinct outwardly extending markings at the center of the lips. The applicator may, for this purpose, be modified to include a pair of rounded protrusions I2, I3, parallel with the center line of the plate and this type of applicator is inserted, swung upward wardly tapered toward the center line of the plate, and a layer of cosmetic material deposited on the major portion of the plate leaving an uncovered margin of uniform Width along the V edges of the plate, the end of the plate opposite said handle being rectangular in shape, the side as indicated in Fig. 3 and withdrawn, it. is found that such markings will distinctly appear extending above and below the lips of the mouth.
The applicator of Fig. 6 may be as above 'de,--, scribed except that, in this case, the indentation I is omitted merelyto show thatsuch indentation is not absolutely essentialbut that similar markings may be obtained without, indenting the surface. 7
In this view, a thin transparent sheet of material I5 is placed over the face of the applicator. The material used should be of the kind which, when heat is applied to the portion of the material above the uncovered margins of the applicator, will adhere lightly to the marginal surface thereof so that it may easily be stripped off from the surface :by the person wishing to apply the cosmetics. This operation may be facilitated by extending thematerial beyond the curved recess I6 of the plate, as indicated at I! in Fig. 6, to form a tab which may be gripped by the fingers of one hand while the fingers of the other hand hold the flngerpiece I3.
It is seen from the foregoing that I have provided .a very simple and conveniently operable applicator which will accommodate any size of mouth; which is self-centering; and the surface of which may be shaped to produce the styles of marking preferred by the individual. I do not, however, thereby intend to be limited to the sizes, proportions and shapes exactly as shown, but reserve the right to embody modifications within the scope of the claims hereto appended.
I claim:
1. A cosmetic applicator comprising, a plate of thin flexible material shaped at one end along the center line thereof to provide a handle, about one-half portion of the plate adjacent said handle being rectangular in shape, the side edges of the remainingportion of the plate being inwardly tapered toward the center line of the plateQahda layer of cosmetic material deposited on the major portion of the plate leaving an uncovered margin of uniform width along the edges of the plate.
2. A cosmetic applicator comprising, a plate of thin flexible material shaped at one end along the center line thereof to provide a handle, about one-half portion of the plate adjacent said handle being rectangular in shape, the side edges of the remaining portion of the plate being inedges of the remaining portion of the plate being inwardly tapered toward the center line of the ,plate,,and a layer of cosmetic material deposited on the major portion of the plate leaving an uncovered margin of uniform width along the edges of the plate, and a narrow uncovered portion extending inwardly from the margin adjacent the handle, along the center,
line of the plate.
4. A cosmetic applicator comprising, a plate of thin flexible material shaped at one end along the center line thereof to provide a handle, about one-half portion of the plate adjacent said handle being rectangular in shape, the side edges of the remaining portion of the plate being inwardly tapered toward the center line of the plate, there being an indentation in the plate extending from the handle along the center line of the plate to a point nearer the opposite end of the plate, and a layer of cosmetic material deposited on the major portion of the plate leaving an uncovered margin of uniform width along the edges of the plate.
5. A cosmetic applicator comprising, a plate of thin flexible material shaped at one end along the center line thereof to provide a handle, about one-half portion of the plate adjacent said handle being rectangular in shape, the side edges of the remaining portion of the plate being inwardly tapered toward the center line of the plate, a layer of cosmetic material deposited on the major portion of the plate leaving an uncovered margin of uniform width along the edges of the plate, and a thin sheet of transparent material covering the plate and tightly attached to the uncovered margins thereof.
6. A cosmetic applicator comprising, a plate of thin flexible material shaped at one end along the center line thereof to provide a handle, about one-half portion of the plate adjacent said handle being rectangular in shape, the side edges" of the remaining portion of the plate being inwardly tapered toward the center line of the plate, a layer of cosmetic material deposited on the major portion of the plate leaving an uncovered margin of uniform width along the edges of the plate, and a thin sheet of transparent material covering the plate and tightly attached to the uncovered margins thereof, the sheet being extended beyond the end of the plate opposite the handle to form a tab.
