ELECTRIC SHAVER Filed July 5, 1949 3nventor d Jul/an (.Ittomeg Patented Feb. 5, i952 A *EEEGTRIC SHAVER I Ralphllulia-n, SpokanaMfasli f n Application J lilyff,1949{ SriiflNO. 1035010 This invention relates to an electric shaver and more particularly m a" comb for such a shaver, it
being, one obj ect of.. the. invention to. provide i a comb so constructed and so mounted that 'when the shaver or ,razoris. in.use-the.comb will have oscillating'movement imparted to it "andwhiskers causedto pass through the comb and intoposftiont'for;the1blade of..therazor to.out the whiskers. It willi'thusz-notbe necessary to: move the-.ra'zor back and forthacrossapersons skin severaltimes in order to cause the whiskers to be moved through openings in the comb and a shaving operation may be quickly performed and without irritating the skin.
Another object of the invention is to provide a comb which may be tiltably mounted for movement upon a shaft from which the blade is supported and operated, thus reducing the'number of parts and simplifying the construction.
Anotherobject of the invention is to provide an electric razor wherein oscillating movement is imparted to the comb by a yoke which is mounted in a cam groove formed about the fly wheel of the motor for the razor.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the comb and its operating mechanism that it may beincorporated in an electric razor of conventional construction.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the improved razor.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the improved razor partially in plan and partially in section.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 33 of Figure 1.
Fig. 4 is a View in cross section taken at right angles to Figure 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the comb.
This improved electric shaver or razor has a I casing l which is formed of plastic, or other suitable material, and is open at its front end. A
I5 at opposite-sides of: the .front end of the casing are .pivotally mounted :in bearinggbrackets -l Biand are-normallyheld in: a: closed :position by springs;

20 of a similarly shaped frame 2 I. This frame has arcuate end bars 22 and each end bar is formed with a longitudinally extending groove 23 so that ends of the frame may be overlapped by marginal edges of the caps l5. Side edge portions of the frame and the perforated metal plate H! are overlapped by lips 24 of the casing and therefore during use of the shaver the comb may have transverse oscillating or vibrating movement. Tongues or ears 25 project from the end bars of the frame and are secured to end plates 26 which are tapered downwardly and have hubs 21 at their lower ends. The hubs project inwardly from the end plates and are rotatably mounted about the shaft 1 l and adjacent one side of the comb each plate carries a screw 28. About the screws, which serve as pivot pins engage eyes 29 at upper ends of the upstanding arms 30 of a yoke 3| which extends longitudinally of the comb in downwardly spaced relation thereto, the arms being slidably mounted in guides 32 carried by the upper portion of the casing. A lug 23 projects from the yoke midway the length thereof and is engaged in the cam,
groove 6 of the fly wheel 5 and as the fly wheel rotates reciprocating movement is imparted to the yoke so that its arms slide longitudinally through the guides and impart oscillating movement to the comb. The comb moves in a direction opposite to that of'the blade and whiskers which pass through the perforations of the plate 19 of the comb will be easily and quickly cut by the blade. Therefore during a shaving operation one movement across a portion of a person's face will cause the whiskers to be cut and it is not necessary to go over the face several times in order to obtain a close and clean shave.
Having thusdescribed the invention, What isv claimed is:
1. In a shaver, a casing having transversely spaced bearing arms integral with its front end and a recess between the arms, a motor in said casing having a forwardly projecting shaft, a fly wheel carried by the front end of said shaft and disposed in said recess, said fiy wheel being formed with'a circumferentially extending cam groove, a shaft supported between said bearing arms, and extending transversely of the body forwardly of the recess, a pin projecting forwardly from said fly wheel eccentric thereto, a blade holder mounted about said shaft for oscillating movement and carrying a transversely arcuate blade, caps at opposite sides of the front end of said casing hinged to the casing for tilting movement to opened and closed positions and yieldably held closed, a comb having a transversely semicircular frame and a plate of perforated metal mounted upon the frame externally thereof and conforming to its transverse curvature, and plates for said frame overlapped by edge portions of the caps when closed, said end plates being tapered rearwardly and at their rear ends carrying hubs loosely mounted about the shaft at opposite ends of the blade carrier, bearing brackets carried by said casing, a U-shaped yoke having a bridge extending across the peripheral edge face of the fly wheel and arms slidably passing through said bearing brackets and pivoted to the end plates in eccentric relation thereto, and a finger projecting from the bridge of said-yoke midway the length thereof and engaged in the cam slot whereby a reciprocating movement will be imparted to the yoke and the comb oscillated about the shaft and moved in a direction opposite to movement of the blade during rotation of the motor shaft and the fly wheel.
4 2. In a shaver, a casing, bearing arms at the front end of said casing, a shaft supported between said arms, a motor in said casing having a forwardly extending shaft and a fly wheel carried thereby, a blade holder carried by said shaft and carrying a blade at its front, a comb having a transversely arcuate frame and plates at ends thereof loosely mounted about said shaft and mounting the comb for oscillating movement, a perforated plate carried by said frame in cooperating relation to the blade, guides carried by the bearing arms of said casing, a yoke having a bridge extending transversely of the shaft and arms slidable longitudinally through the'guides and pivoted to the end plates, and a lug projecting from the bridge and engaged in a cam groove formed about the fly wheel for reciprocating the yoke and imparting oscillating movement to the comb during rotation of the fly wheel.
