UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN IIIvOE., OE NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOE., BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, rro MAHALA A. LIVOE, OE SAME PLAGE.
COMBINED LABEL, GUIDE-SLIP, AND WRAPPER FOR BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION' forming 'part of Letters Patent N o. 257,136, dated April 25, 1882.
' Application filed January 12, 1862. (Model.)
To all whom t mag/.concern y Be it known that I, JOHN LIVOR, of New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Label, Guide-Slip, and Wrapper for Bottles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combined label, guide-slip, and wrapper for bottles containing medicines; and it has for its object to provide a device that may be expeditiously attached to the bottle, the portion attached constitut ing a label, a portion being left free and unattached, and forming a guide-slip upon which are indicated the names ofthe diseasesfor which the medicine should be prescribed, as well as a wrapper for the bottle, while the label portion contains directions as to the proper doses, as
more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, iu which- Figure l represents a front view of my improved label aud slip; and Fig.2, aview showing the method of attaching the label to the bottle, the slip being left free and unwrapped from the bottle.
VThe letter-A indicates a strip of paper or other fabric of suitable length and width. One end of the said slip constitutes the label B, and is suitably printed and ornamented upon its face by printing or otherwise, as shown, the other and greater portion of the strip constituting the guideslip C. Within the border of the label are printed the directions in regard to the proportions ofthe doses, and on the guide-slip are printed the names ot' the diseases for which the medicine is to be prescribed, the said slip forming a perfect key'to the label, and indicating to those not particularly skilled in medicine the diseases for which the medicine is intended and the proper doses to be employed. The guide-label, beingloose, may
be wrapped around the bottle, forming a protective wrapper therefor. The label portion of the strip at the back may be gummed, like the ordinary postage-stamp, or such portion 5o may be pasted or cemented at the time it is attached to the bottle. The side of the border of the label adjoiningthe guide-slip forms a convenient guidefor applying the label when it is done by pasting.
The improved device is not intended to be conned in its application to any particular medicine or class of medicines, but to all that are at present known or may hereafter become known.
The advantages of my invention are that, the label and slip being in one piece or connected together, when the label is attached to the bottle the slip is not liable to be lost or destroyed, as would be the case with a loose 6 5 wrapper, and the slip can be made long enough to contain the names of the various diseases to which the medicine is applicable, no matterhow numerous, and the doses, being printed on the label, can be conveniently observed in connec- 7o tion with the guide-slip when the same is unrolled', without detaching such slip.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s 7 In combination with a bottle, a label, guide 5 slip, and wrapper, the guide-slip consisting of a strip of paper or other fabric having a printed label at one end, and the remaining portion ofthe slip containing instructions, the 8o label end ot' the guide-slip being attached tothe bottle and the remaining portion of the slip left free and adapted to be wrapped aroundV the bottle, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereoflafx my signature in 85 presence of two witnesses this 5th day of January, 1882.
JOHN LIVOR.
