This invention relates to undergarments and more particularly to underwear of the type known as shorts It has been found that these garments quickly become soiled between the crotch and the lower end of the fly and also along the legs forwardly of the inner side seams of the legs by perspiration and it is, therefore, one object of the invention to provide the garment with facings for these portions which will absorb perspiration and make the garment more serviceable.

Another object of the invention is to provide facing sheets which will lie flat against inner surfaces of the portions of the garment to which they are applied and thus provide a double thickness without causing the garment to be bulky and without detracting from the appear-V ance ofthe garment.

, Still another object of the invention is to provide facing sheets which may be incorporated in garments of a conventional construction and thus not add materially to the cost of manufacturingthe garment.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved garment turned inside out in order to disclose the facing sheets;

Figure 2 is a sectional view upon an enlarged scale taken transversely through the legs of the garment along the line 2--2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view upon an enlarged scale, taken along the line 3--3 of Figure 1; and

Figure 4 is a view of the two facing sheets before being applied to the garment.

The garment which is indicated in general by the numeral l is generally of a conventional construction and has the usual body 2 and legs 3. The usual front opening bordered by a fly 4 is provided at the front of the garment and from the lower end of the fly extends the usual seam 5 which extends from the lower end of the ily to meet upper ends of the inner side seams 6 of the legs. Such garments are formed of. woven fabric and are of single thickness. Therefore, they quickly become soiled and stained below the ily and along inner side portions of the legs by perspiration.

kIn order to prevent this staining of the garment, the improved garment has been provided with facing sheets 1 formed of fabric which will readily absorb moisture. These facing sheets are of an even width for the major portion of their length from their lower ends, but their upper portions are tapered and have upwardly converging inner and outer side edges 8 and 9. The inner side edges 8 are straight cut, but the outer side edges 9 are curved or arcuate throughout their length, as shown in Figure 4. When these facing sheets are applied to the garment, they `are disposed at against the legs 3 and eX- tend longitudinally thereof forwardly of the inner side seams 6 with the inner side edge portions sewed into these seams. The tapered upper portions 7 of the facing sheets are brought towards each other and lower portions of their straight cut inner side edges 8 sewed together to form a seam I0 and upper portions thereof sewed into lower portions of the folds Il forming the y 4. The arcuate outer side edges 9 then merge into each other and also merge into the outer side edges of the facing sheets.

Therefore, the facing sheets form a continuous facing having portions extending upwardly along inner side portions of the legs 3 of the garment and merging into each other between the crotch and the lower end of the fly 4. The facing sheets cover an area approximately one-half the distance between inner and outer side seams of the legs and at the front of the garment serve very effectively to absorb moisture and prevent goods from which the garment is made from becoming soiled. v

From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved undergarment, the assembly thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a comparatively simple, inexpensive and eicient means for carrying out the various objects of the invention.

While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what is claimed is:

A garment comprising a body having legs and a front opening bordered by a y, the legs having inner side seams meeting at their upper ends and intersected by a seam extending downwardly from the ily, and a facing for the inner side portions of the legs forwardly of the inner side seams and the portion of the front of the body under the fly, said facing consisting of sheets of absorbent fabric disposed iiat against inner surfaces of the legs forwardly of the inner side seams and sewed along their side edges and having their inner side edges engaged in the inner side seams of the legs, the upper portion of each fabric sheet being upwardly tapered and formed with upwardly converging diagonally eX- tending inner and outer side edges intersecting midway the width of the sheet, the inner side edges of the said tapered upper portions of the sheets being straight cut and sewed together between meeting ends of the inner side seams of the legs and the lower end of the fly with portions overlapped by the lower portion of the fly, and the outer side edges of the said `tapered upper portions of the sheets being longitudinally curved to provide outwardly bowed arcuate edges having upper ends disposed in alignment with each other and lower ends merging into upper 4 ends of the outer side edges of major portions of the sheets.
