In the drawings, the numeral lG designates generally an elongate tubular envelope-like sheet which is formed of an upper substantially rectangular panel of sheet material II and a lower panel [2, identical in configuration and size, sewn together at their sides along-a seam l3 and at one end-along a seam l4, and having an open end I5. The material at the open end-of the sheet is folded back upon itself and stitched together separately on each sheet panel -to form a hem l6, strengthening the material at such open end of the sheet. The elongate tubular sheet I5 is adapted to slide onto and fit closely about a mattress M, as clearly shownin- Figures 1 and 2, to provide smooth unwrinkled surfaces exposed to the user of the bed and covering both the upper and lower supporting surfaces of the mattress, as well as all the sides. 4
When the sheet is slipped over the mattress in the manner just described, the length of the sheet is such that the'open end thereof may be folded downwardly and backwardly under the end of the mattress, as shown in Figures 1. and 2. While any suitable fastening means may be used, it is preferable that elongate tie tapes 1 l be sewn or otherwise securely afiixed to the marginal edges of the open end l5 of the sheet, and that similar tie tapes I8 be securely sewn or-otherwise affixed to the sheet at the seamjoining the marginal edges of the sheet panels and located ata point spaced from the open end of the sheet, as best shown in Figure 1, whereby the tapes ll and It on each side may be tied together to securely maintain the open end of the sheet in the folded position under the mattress, completely enclosing the same and holding the sheet taut and preventing longitudinal displacement of the sheet on the mattress.
Manifestly, the end portion of the tubular sheet, which extends beyond the end of the mattress, may be folded in either direction, whereby either the upper sheet panelsection II or the lower sheet panel section I2 may be exposed for use. Thus, when the sheet has been used in the position illustrated in Figure 1 until it is desired to present a clean fresh sheet surface to the user, it is only necessary to reverse the mattress, turning the upper sheet section II downwardly and exposing the lower sheet section 12, and to release the tie tapes IT and I8 and fold the extended open end portion of the edge sheet about the end of the mattress and back along and below the upper sheet section II, whereupon the tie tapes I! and [8 maybe retied and the sheet and mattress are again ready for use with the sheet section l2 uppermost and exposed. 7
It will be seen, therefore,- that the tubular envelope-like sheet In is tightly fitted onto the mattress and held in position thereon to present smooth top and edge surfaces to contactby the user, and that the means for securing the sheet in place on the mattress is not exposed to the user. It will further be seen that a substantial saving of material is effected, since each sheet panel section is considerably smaller in length and width than a standard sheet, which standard sheet would necessarily extend downwardly the full height of the side of the mattress and have a sufiicient marginal edge portion on each side to tuck under the mattress, and would also have to be of sufiicient length to tuck in at'the head end of the mattress as well as at the foot end. Furthermore, since each tubular envelope-like sheet may be used on both sides by reversing the mattress and the sheet, as has already been explained, the wear life of the sheet is increased and the laundering necessary is decreased. It has been calculated that it is possible to make two of the tubular envelope-like sheets each having two usable surfaces from approximately the same amount of material that would be required to make three standard singleisheets for the same size mattress. Thus, a substantial saving in material is effected.
Fastening means, such as spaced snap type female fastener halves 20 are secured to the hem sections I6 of the open end of the tubular sheet, as clearly shown in Figure ,3, such fastenersbeing affixed on a reinforcing tape 2! which is sewn or otherwise afiixed to the hem portion of each sheet section, with the fasteners exposed on the outer surface of such .hem sections.
An elongate cover or top sheet 22 hemmed at each end, and of substantially the same length as the tubular sheet l0, has similarly aff xed male snap fastener halves .23 secured to the hem portion at one end, whereby said male fastener halves may be snappedinto. the female fastener halves 20 on the tubular sheet, as clearlyshown in Figure 2, to detachably connect the cover or top sheet 22 with the tubular sheet; The cover or top sheet 22 is then folded around the foot end of the mattress and back along the upper surface thereof, overlying the upper sheet section I I, to provide a cover for the user of the mattress and bedding. The fasteners 25 and 23 positively secure the foot end of .the cover sheet 22 in place beneath the mattress, and prevent the cover sheet from being pulled looseor displaced by the user of the bedding. Manifestly, the top or cover sheet may be made of blanket material, if desired.
When it is desired that the tubular sheet and the mattress M be reversed, so that the lower sheet section 12 is exposed, the cover or top sheet 22 is unsnapped from the fasteners on the exposed side of the tubular sheet hem l5 and'refastened to the snap fastener halves 25 on the 0p-- posite hem, and the open end of the tubular sheet is untied and folded downwardly and back along the upper sheet section I I and retied, whereby the cover or .top sheet is again secured to the tubular sheet beneath the mattress and the sheets are again ready for use.
In order to protect the mattress against staining or dampening, when the same is used, as by patients in a hospital or for infants, an elongate tubular imperforate water-impervious sheet 25, of rubber or similar material, is slid onto the mattress beneath the tubularsheet ill, the diameter of the rubber tube 25 being such that it closely fits and is held in place on the mattress. Since the tubular rubber sheet 25 extends completely around the mattress, it isobvious that both sides of the mattress are protected when :the mattress and the tubular envelope-like sheet I are-reversed iii-the manner already described. l urthermore thetighterlgagement of the tubular rubber sheet with the mattress prevents wrinkling and displacement-of therubber sheet, and no other--means needbe providedfor -holding the tubular rubber sheet in place on the mattress.
-In' using the tubular envelope-like sheet I (l, in the care '-of infants or-invalids, it is-frequently desirable and necessary'that some protective'and absorbent article be positioned on the sheet 'to coverand protect the same against stains; moisture'and the like. An embodiment-0f the tubular sheetof'the inventionhav-ing protective articles detachably securedin p'osition on said" sheet to cover and protect the same against-stain and moisture is illustrated in Figuresithrough 8 inclusive.
The tubular sheetincludes an upper sheet panel section 3| anda-lower sheet panelsection '32, secured together along their longitudinal edges-as indicated at '33 and along one end as indicated at-34, to provide the elongate tubular envelope-like sheet 30 open at one end and adapted to be slipped onto. and fit snugly about themattressyin" the manner already described. Thus, the rubber sheet --may be securely and tautlyaffixed on' the uppersurface of the tubu- -lar='-cover sheet 3D to protect the sheet against st ins; dampening, and-the "like.
If"-it"is--desired thatan absorbent Dad beincluded-intheprotective;artic1eP, it is preferable-that -the-'pa'd be-formed of a rectangular "envelope" 55, made oftoweling, mesh material; er the like, having an inner sheet 56 and a-n-outer sh'eet 5'l sewn together along three-marginal edgesas indicat'edinFigure 5, whereby anenvelope-like receptacle having an "open end is provided for-receivingand enclosing a mass of'ab- 'sorbent material 58. Thus, the envelope and absorbent materialforms a pad for absorbing -moisture, stains, and-the like. A reinforcing tape 59, having female snap fastener halves secured thereon, is sewn'to the marginal edges of the envelope, whereb the male fastener halves 541cm the marginal edges of the rubber sheet 51 may be engaged in the female snap'fasten'er halves of the absorbent pad envelope 55, "to securely detachably aflix' the absorbent pad envelope to the rubber sheet. Therefore, the absorbent pad envelope having the absorbent material confined thereinis positively detachably held in' place above therubber sheet'5l, whereby the absorbent material in the envelope will absorb-moisture and'the like, and the rubber sheet willpreventthe moisture from traveling from the absorbent material to the sheet 30 and mattress therebelo'w.
Manifestly, if desired, the upper sheet panel 51of the absorbent padenve10pe'55 may be provided with a projecting flapffil along the open end, of the envelope, and this flap 6| may'be turned'downwardlywand inwardly along and below" the lower sheet panel'56 to close the open end of the envelope and prevent the absorbent material 58 from being displaced from within the envelope. Or, flaps may be provided on both the .upper and lower sheet panels, if desired.
The protective pad may take various shapes and forms, as has already been explained, and .a small head pad adapted to be secured at the head end of the bed for protecting the bed against stains and moisture is shown in Figure 4. The .padconstruction is the same as that of the protective article P, which has already been described, the difference being that the head pad H, is smaller and may form a separate protective article from a body pad or other article secured at other positions on the tubular sheet 30 and mattress.
.Manifestly, the imperforate water-impervious sheet 5| may be reversed'in position when the mattress is turned .to expose the lower sheet section' 32 for use by the patient or infant. This reversal of the rubber sheet maybe effected ,by loosening the catches'Sfrom' the loopsMialong one side of the tubular sheet andiswinging the sheet about the loops on the other side 'of'tlie sheet until heruh er sh et po ion glabeye h -lqwe s eet an z. w r u n thee e 43 may be reengagedwith the loops A to secure- 1y affix the rubber sheet in place for protecting said sheet panel. Also, male snap fastener halves 54 may be secured on the reinforcing tape 52 op P 5 1 9. theia te ha es y, DI0f tective pad envelope may be detachably connected to the opposite side of the rubber sheet in the manner already described, by snapping the male fastener halves 54 into the female fastener halves 60 of the protective article. 3 7 If desired, the protective article may be modifled in the manner illustrated in Figure '7, wherein the protective article P includes an absorbent material containing envelope 65 formed with an inner sheet 66 and an outer sheet 61 of suitable material, such as toweling or mesh material, for enclosing and holding a mass of absorbent material 68 therein. The marginal edges of the sheets of the envelope are sewn or otherwise secured together with the inner ends of the loops 69 secured therebetween. Reinforcing tape strips 70, having female snap fastener halves ll secured thereto at spaced points, are sewn or otherwise secured to each outer side of the marginal edge of the envelope. One marginal edge of the envelope 65 is left unsewn, whereby the absorbent material 68 may be readily inserted within said envelope.
' A sheet of imperforate water-impervious material 12, such as rubber, plastic or the like, has a reinforcing tape 13 secured along its marginal edges, and this tape carries spaced male fastener halves M adapted to be snapped into the female snap fastener halves l l, whereby the rubber sheet may be securely detachably affixed or connected to one side of the absorbent pad envelope $5.
The envelope 65 is fully reversible, when the mattress and tubular sheet 30 are turned to present the lower sheet panel section 32 for use by the occupant of the bed, by loosening the catches 43 from the loops 69 and turning the envelope to position it above the sheet section 32. The catches are then reengaged with the loops to again secure the envelope in place.
The absorbent material 68 in the protective article P may be a mass of toweling, quilted absorbent cotton, or similar washable and reusable absorbent material. Or, such absorbent material may be formed of disposable absorbent material, such as paper toweling, paper diaper material, or the like.
The catch member for connecting the loops of the tubular sheet and the loops 5B of the protective article may take the shape illustrated in Figure 8, wherein the catch 413a is substantially S-shaped and has a catch arm 42a at its lower end and a similar oppositely directed catch arm 44a at its upper end. The catch arms are adapted to be inserted into the loops 40 and to detachably connect the loops and thus detachably secure the protective article in place on the tubular sheet. Manifestly, other forms of catches may be employed instead of the catches illustrated, as for example snap fasteners.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that an improved bed covering has been provided having means thereon for the attachment of other articles of bedding, such as a cover sheet, a top sheet, protective and absorbent pads, and the like. It will also be seen that the bed covering constitutes a tubular envelope-like sheet which is constructed and arranged to slip onto a mattress and fit tightly thereon to present smooth unwrinkled f ce xposed t9 h user f h bed said tubular sheet covering both the upper and lower supporting surfaces of the mattress, as well as its sides whereby the mattress andsheet are reversible so that both surfaces may be used without changing or laundering the sheet. Furthermore, the accessories, such as the cover sheet or topsheet, protective and absorbentpad, and the like, which are detachably secured to the tubular sheet, may be reversed when the tubular sheet and mattress are reversed. It will also be seen that the tubular envelope-like sheet has means provided thereon for the releasable attachment of a cover sheet or top sheet to the foot of the tubular sheet, whereby the cover or top sheet is held in place against displacement .by the user, such as an infant or invalid; and, that the attaching means permits the top or cover sheet to be secured to either sheet panel section of the tubular sheet, whereby the cover sheet may be secured to said tubular sheet to cover the exposed sheet panel section, regardless of which uppermost and exposed for use. Also, the cover sheet may be made of blanket material, if desired.
Furthermore, the top or cover sheet which is detachably connected to the tubular envelopelike sheet is secured against displacement by the user and the snap fasteners are covered against contact or exposure to the user of the bed and are concealed beneath the mattress.
It is also manifest that an imperforate waterimpervious protective sheet has been provided which is tubular in form and which is adapted to be slipped on to the mattress to protect the same against moisture, staining and the like;
, said sheet being so constructed and arranged as to protect both the upper and lower supporting surfaces of mattress, as well as the sides thereof, whereby the mattress is completely protected and may be reversed without removing and reattaching the tubular protective sheet.
It is believed to be clearly apparent that various types of protective articles, such as absorbent pads, muslin protective sheets, head pads, and other accessories of various sizes and shapes, may be detachably and reversibly secured in position on the tubular sheet, whereby the protective articles may be reversed in position when the mattress and tubular sheet are turned to permit use of both surfaces thereof, and whereby a plurality of various accessories may be simultaneously independently secured to the tubular sheet as demetallic fastening means which would stain or tear the tubular sheet. Furthermore, the tubular sheet is economical to manufacture, and provides for a substantial saving of material in manufacture, since two of the tubular sheets,
each having two usable surfaces, may be made from substantially the same amount of material required to make three single sheets for the same size mattress.
The tubular sheet is particularly adapted for use on the beds of infants, but may as readily be used on invalid beds and the like, if desired. The accessories are also particularly adapted for use in the care of infants; but, as has been explained, may as readily be used in the care of invalids and adults. Obviously, accessories other than those shown and described may be detachably secured in position on the envelope-like tubularssheet- 1: and; may
