This invention relates to a bench viseand more particularly to a bench vise including means for rotatably mounting the device with respect to a supporting surface.
An object of the invention is the provision of a bench vise and a rotable base therefor, said vise being removably mounted in said rotatable base.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a bench vise incorporating means for locking a removable jaw carrying portion thereof in a rotatable base section.
The bench vise shown and described herein comprises an improvement in the art in that a bench vise is disclosed in which a workpiece may be positioned and clamped by suitable jaws. The vise comprises a two-part construction, one of which (the vise portion) receives and positions the jaws with respect to the workpiece and the other of which (the base portion) receives and positions thevise portion with respect to a sup porting object such as a workmans bench.
The bench vise shown herein is thus capable of being employed in connection with a milling machine lathe, drill press or other machine tools for rapidly and efiiciently mounting a workpiece with respect to the machine tool and enabling the mounted workpiece and a portion of the vise to be removed from the machine tool and re-- placed to the original setting with respect to the machine tool.

Figure 6 is a perspective view of a portion of the bench vise shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings and Figures 1 through 4 in particular it will be seen that a bench vise has been disclosed which comprises a vise portion and a rotatable base portion, the vise portion being removably mounted in the base portion and the base portion serving as a means for mounting the vise portion on a supporting surface such as a workmans bench.
In Figures 1 through 4 of the drawings the vise portion is indicated by the numeral I0 and the same comprises an elongated body member having oppositely disposed upstanding end pieces II and I2. The end piece II is drilled longitudinally of the body member I3 and threaded as at I3 to receive a screw I4. The outer end of the screw 1 Claim. (01. 81-41) I4is enlarged as at I5 and has a transverse opening [-6 in which a movable pin 17 is positioned. The inner end of the screw I4 is caged in an opening I8 in a movable jaw I9 by a removable plug 23-. The jaw I9 is incapable of rotary motion with respect to the screw I4 by reason of its engagement with a longitudinal channel 2| in the vise body In.
The jaw I9 is rectangular in shape and i-ncludes a fiat face 22. Openings 23-23 are formed in the'jaw I9 in spaced relation-to one another and at either side of the central opening -I 8- therein which receives and retains the end of the screw Itheretofore referred to. Thejaw I9 is provided with friction catches 24-24- normallyextending into the openings 23-23 and adaptable to engage pins positioned in the openings 23-23 and serving as a means to retain a secondary jaw .25.
in position against the flat face 22, as shown in I LI Figures 1, 2 and 3 of thedrawingsa The secondary jaw 25 is illustrated with a fiat face 26 and with projecting pins 21-21 ngaged in the openings 23-23 and held by the friction catches 24-24. Rotary motion imparted the screw l4 will therefore move the jaw I9 toward or away from the end II of the vise I0 and at the same time move the secondary jaw 25 by reason of its attachment to the jaw I9 as hereinbefore described.
The upstanding end piece I2 of the body member II] is provided with a pair of spaced openings 30-30 and friction catches 3I-3I by means of which a secondary jaw 32 may be secured to the upstanding portion I2 by means of pins 33-33 formed thereon and engaging the openings 30-30.
It will thus be seen that the body portion I0 of the bench vise is adapted to receive the jaw 32 and that the jaw I9 and the secondary jaw 25 attached thereto is movable with respect to the upstanding portion I2 of the body In and the secondary jaw 32 attached thereto. The end of the body member ID adjacent the upstanding portion I2 is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed, longitudinally extending grooves 34-34 in the sides thereof, as best shown in Figures 2 and 4 of the drawings, so that the body member ,ID may be engaged in an upper rotatable portion 35 of a base including a lower mounting portion 36.
The upper rotatable portion 35 of the base has a pair of oppositely disposed inturned flanges 31-31 formed thereon which register with the longitudinally extending grooves 34-34 formed in the sides of the body In of the vise. The body in of the vise may, therefore, be slidably engaged in the portion 35 of the base. and means is provided for securing the same therein and comprises a cam lock 38 positioned in a vertical opening in the rotatable portion 35 of the base, as best shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. The cam lock includes an inverted headed body member 39 having a shaft 40' extending thereabove and having the cam 38 formed thereon for engagement with the body member ID and, specifically, with the inclined surface of the groove 34 therein. Thus rotary motion imparted to the cam 38 will cause the same to progressively tighten against the body member I and hold the same in fixed position. The pair of cams 38 are mounted in the rotatable portion 35 of the base and in oppositely disposed relation so that the body member ID is locked from both sides simultaneously.
A cutaway portion 41 in the rotatable portion 35 of the base enables a scale 42 formed on the upper surface of the stationary portion of the base 36 to be observed and the device thus set to any predetermined point. It will thus be seen that a workpiece may be positioned between the interchangeable jaws in the vise portion of the device, the same fixed with respect to the rotatable base portion by the locking action of the cams 38 and which cams 38 also lock the rotatable portion 35 of the base with respect to the stationary portion 36 thereof as the heads 39 on the cams 38 are engaged in annular channels formed in the stationary portion 36 of the base. The device may thus be used to present a workpiece to a machine tool and in desired relation thereto and at the same time permit the workpiece and vise portion of the device to be removed and replaced at will and the predetermined setting with respect to the machine tool achieved in each instance.
It will thus be seen that a novel bench vise has been disclosed and particularly the novel means for slidably receiving the vise portion of the device in the rotatable portion of the base thereof and the means for simultaneously securing the vise portion of the device to the rotatable portion of the base and locking the rotatable portion of the base with respect to the stationary portion thereof. The device is so formed that it may be readily machined and thereby enable relatively easy and inexpensive formation and it will thus be seen to meet the several objects of the invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is: a A bench vise comprising a stationary base portion, a rotatable base portion mounted thereon, a pair of cam members positioned in said rotatable portion and arcuately slidable in said stationary base portion, oppositely disposed inturned flanges on said rotatable base portion, and a vise portion slidably engageable with said oppositely disposed inturned flanges, said cams being engageable with said vise portion for securing the same in said rotatable base portion and for securing the rotatable base portion to said stationary base portion.
