M. DRUCK WINDOW CURTAIN June 5, 1951 Filed Dec. 16, 1948 MTWHE A w. J
.T 91H 4 w INVENTOR. E DRUCK ATTCDRNLH".
Patented June 5, 1951 UNIT-ED STATES PATENT OFFICE WINDOW CURTAIN Maurice Druck, Long Beach, N. Y.
Application December 16, 1948, Serial No. .65,700
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to an improved curtain and, more especially, to rufiled, border-type curtains having a central top panel and a pair of depending, resiliently extensible side panels. l `It is a primary object of the invention to provide a border-type curtain which may be readily hung from a supporting rod and which is provided with a pair of depending stretchable side panels adjustable for a wide variety of window sizes without requiring measuring, cutting and stitching.
Another object of the invention is the pro- Vision of a curtain of the character indicated wherein the Astretchable side panels are formed into gathers or shirring throughout the length thereof by means of longitudinally extending elastic threads stitched to the back surface of the side panels in unobtrusive position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a curtain of the character indicated which is adjustable to a wide Variety of window sizes; which is designed in such a manner as to be positively supported from its top central panel without sagging; which is provided with resiliently shirred side panels related in such a manner to the top support panel thereof as to provide a continuously ruffled and attractive appearance when hung from a curtain rod; and which may be fabricated easily and inexpensively.
The foregoing objects as well as additional objects and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent in the course of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, and wherein:
Fig. l is an elevational view of a curtain embodying the features of the invention hung in place about a window;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed front view of a portion of one of the depending side panels of the curtain;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary rear view of the curtain showing a curtain rod partially inserted within the retaining pocket of the central panel, a portion of the central panel being gathered upon the rod to provide a ruiiled appearance continuous with the ruiiles of the adjacent side panel;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4--4 of Fig. 3 illustrating the manner of securing the elastic threads to the rear of the side panel and the disposition of the decorative medial front band along which the shirring or gathering of each panel is formed; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken along line 5--5 of Fig. 3 illustrating the formation of a retaining pocket for a curtain rod on the top central panel of the curtain.
Referring now to the drawings in greater detail, the curtain is of the border-type and may be cut from any suitable material to form a central top panel I0 and a pair of depending side panels II. Each of the side panels II is preferably provided with a medial front stiffening band I2 and with a pair of elastic threads I3 of rubber or the like extending longitudinally of the side panel on the rear side thereof and disposed on either side of said medial front band. Lines of stitching I4 secure the elastic threads I3 to the `side panel, as shown in Fig. 4, and the innermost pair of said lines of stitching also serve to secure the front band I2 to the side panel II. The elastic threads I3 are stitched to the side panel II in tensioned condition and the stitching I4 is relatively loose so that after the stitching operation has been completed said elastic threads will contract to form shirring or gathers along the medial band I2 and ruffles I5 at the terminal edges of the panel II.
In order to provide positive support for the curtain, the top panel I0 is provided with a retaining pocket I6 for the insertion of a eurtain rod I1, as shown in Fig. 3. 'Ihe retaining pocket I6 may be conveniently formed by securing a medial band I8 to the front of top panel I0 by means of parallel marginal lines of stitching I9 resulting in a pocket open at both ends for the reception of the curtain rod I1. Each side panel II may be joined to the top central panel I0 by means of a transverse line of stitching 20 interrupted to leave the ends of retaining pocket I6 open.
In actual use the curtain is hung from and positively supported without sagging by means of the curtain rod I'I inserted within the retaining pocket I6. The stretchable side panels II are then extended to the desired length depending upon the size of the window about which they are being hung and the lower ends thereof are secured by means of tacks 2| or any other suitable fastening elements, as shown in Fig. 1. Ruiiles 22 may be formed in the inelastic top panel I0 by gathering said top panel along curtain rod I1 and said top panel ruilles combine with the ruilles I5 of the stretehable side panels Il to produce a continuously ruiiled appearance around the inner and outer marginal edges of the curtain.
The practice of the present invention thus provides a border-type curtain readily adaptable for windows of varying sizes and shapes which may be positively supported without sagging from the top central panel .and which is provided with resiliently, shirred, ruiiled side panels conveniently extensible to any desired length along the window frame. The elastic threads I3 which form the side panel ruffles I 5 are further disposed sents a continuous, uninterrupted ruflied appearl ance when hung in place.
Since certain modifications may be made in the curtain of the present invention without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that Yall matter contained in the foregoing speci'- cation and shown in the accompanying drawing be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is lclaimed is:
1. A border-ftype curtain comprising a central supporting panel having a retaining pocket for the reception of a curtain rod and a pair of resiliently extensible side panels depending from said supporting panel, each of said side panels having a medial longitudinal stiilening band se cured to the front surface thereof and elastic threads extending medially and longitudinally along the rear surface of each of saidr side panels o n either side of said medial band, whereby to define a central, resiliently shirred portion along said medial band and outer ruied portions at the marginal edge of said side panel.
2. A border-type curtain comprising a central supporting panel having a, retaining pocket for the reception of a curtain rod and a pair of resiliently extensible side panels depending from said supporting panel, each of said side panels having a medial longitudinal stifening band along the front surface thereof, elastic threads Vextending medially and longitudinally along the rear surface of each of said side panels on either side of said medial band, whereby to dene a REFERENCESv CITED The following references are of Vrecord in the iile of this patent:
