VIBRATOR FOR THE FILLINGS 0F TOOTH CAVITIES Filed July 28, 1948 Patented Nov. 28, 1950 Giista Karl Gustaf Gusta-fson, Goteborg, Sweden,
assignor to Vastra Sveriges Dentaldepot, Goteborg, Sweden Application July .28, 1948, Serial No. 41,127 In Sweden July :9, 194 7 7 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to an apparatus for imposing vibratory impacts upon fillings of tooth cavities, and the object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of an apparatus suitable for the purpose in consideration.
I attain this object by mechanism illustrated in the annexed drawing, which 1 shows a portion of an angularly extending handle of a type known per se for boring tools, said handle having provided therein a contrivance according to the invention; Fig. 2 shows a pin adapted to operate upon the fillings; Fig. 3 is an endwise view of the same pin viewed from above in .Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 shows a further embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention.
In the drawing, 1 designates an angularly extending handle of a type known per se, such as is generally used when drillin in teeth. Extending through the handle is a driving shaft 2 formed at the end thereof with teeth 3 adapted to engage teeth 4 on a sleeve 5 arranged at right angles to the shaft 2. The sleeve 5 is rotatably mounted in a hollow within the front portion-of the handle.
Detachably secured to the handle by means of screw-threads is a socket v6, the one end or which, being located in the hollow of the handle, serves as a thrust bearing for the sleeve 5 to prevent unintentional removal of the latter from the hollow. The opposite end of the socket 6 is formed with cams or similar members 1 adapted to engage corresponding cams 8 on a member 9 mounted in the sleeve 5. The member 9 is secured to a pin HI adapted to operate upon fillings in tooth cavities, and the cams l, 8 are adapted to displace the pin in the axial direction during the rotary movement thereof. The rotation of the pin [0 is mediated by the shaft 2 through the agency of the sleeve, 5-with which the pin is non-rotatably connected-for instance by the pin bein provided with a shoulder ll cooperating with a corresponding shoulder in the bore of the sleeve 5. The pin is adapted to be detachably connected to the handle in a manner known per so with the aid of a locking bar l2, which may grasp about a restriction IS in the upper end portion of the pin. The bar I2 is pivotally mounted in a slit provided in the handle.
The contrivance operates in the following manner. If the shaft 2 is caused to rotate, the sleeve 5 and thus the pin [0 will also rotate. By reason of the fact that the member 9 provided with the cams 8 is rigidly connected with the pin II], the member 9 is caused to participate in the rotary movement of the pin, the cams 8 being thus caused to run over the cams 1 on the socket 6.
ill
Now, when the outer end of the pin is pressed against the filling intended to be operated upon, a vibratory movement is brought about, inasmuch as the pin will be displaced back and tenth for short-distances on account of the cams l and 8 and the pressure exerted by the operator on the pin.
In the form of embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the pin 14, with the aid of which the fillings are operated upon, is non-rotatably arranged in a sleeve 15,, which is in turn non-rotatably connected with the handle i The upper end of the pin M located within the sleeve I5 is: formed with a conical head [-6 engaging a corresponding recess at the center or a circular disc ii. The head i5 also forms a shoulder 18 having one 'end of a spring I?! bearing thereagainst, said spring tending to move the pin toward the disc 1 l. The axial displacement of the pin i4 is elfected by means of cams or similar members 20 on the disc 11, said cams being. adapted to cooperate with similar cams 21 on a socket 22 secured to the handle. The disc I! is rotatably arranged, and to this end it is secured to the end of a shaft 23 adapted to be driven in a. similar manner as that port on of the pin I!) (Fig. 1) which is located within the hollow of thehandle.
The mode of operation of the apparatus now described is substantially the same as that of the previously described contrivance. It should be noted in this connection that the spring l9 may also be adapted to move the disc IT in a di-- rection toward the socket 22, so that the cams 20 and 21 will always engage each other without the necessity of pressing the pin H manually inwardly.
Obviously, the constructive design of the invention is not limited to the forms of embodiment herein described and illustrated, said construction permittin of being varied within the scope of the appended claims.
