Brown, Kendall, Fla.
Application March 28, 1947, Serial No. 737,814
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in portable containers and particularly to a special article container or carrier, such as a gun case.
It is known to provide cases for carrying guns and similar articles but such gun cases as are now available are expensive, usually cumbersome to carry, are not easy to pack and usually do not offer sufiicient protection to the gun or guns carried therein, are not sufiiciently durable in use, and do not provide a sufiiciently convenient receptacle for the gun and accessories, such as cleaning equipment, ammunition, etc, for use when the gun is being used in a competitive match or in target practice.
' It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a lightweight, strong, rigid and durable gun case which is inexpensively formed of a suitable moldable material, such as synthetic resin, which has compartments for the gun parts and for accessories, in which the carrying handle is directly secured to the part of the case in which the gun parts and accessories are supported so that the case is exceptionally durable in use, which is tightly sealed when closed, to protect the gun partsfrom moisture and other abrasive or corrosive material, and which can conveniently be used as a receptacle and support to protect the gun from coming in contact with the ground while being used in a competitive or practice event and provide a convenient easily accessible receptacle for accessory gun parts, cleaning implements, fluids, ammunition, etc.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational View of one side of the improved gun case in open condition.
Figure 2 is an elevational viewof the opposite side of the gun case in open position.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the gun case in fully closed condition, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view of the gun case in closed condition, taken on th line 4-4 of Figure 1.
The improved gun case comprises a center or intermediate portion lo having a top wall l2, a bottom wall l3 and side walls 14 and I5, end walls 50 and 51 and cover members l6 and l! overlying the bottom wall I3 and the side walls I4 and 15 respectively of the center portion 10.
The side wall 14 has a cavity 18 molded therein which is shaped to receive the stock, breach and forearm of a gun and this cavity extends sub- 2 stantially the full length of the case. Cushion pads 20, 2i and 22 of suitable material, such as felt, are secured in the cavity to cushion the gun parts received therein and the portion of the gun received in the cavity i8 is retained therein by suitable securing members, such as slide bars 23 and 2e slidable in guide ways 25 and 26 molded on the exterior of the side wall It.-
The cavity i9 provides a compartment for ammunition or gun cleaning devices and materials and may be divided longitudinally by an intermediate shelf or partition 2'! and is closed by a removable cover plate 23 releasably secured in place by suitable means, such as the thumb screw 29.
The side Wall 15 is provided with twosimilar rounded cavities 30 and 3! arranged substantially parallel and disposed one above the'other, as is particularly shown in Figure 2. These cavities 3.0 and 3! receive gun barrels which are cushioned therein by suitable felt pads, as indicated at 32 and 33, and are held in the cavities by slides 34, 35, 36 and 31 slidable in respective guide ways molded on the exterior of the side walls 15. A cavity 38 is provided with a slidable cover 39 the edges of which fit into a guideway 40 surrounding the cavity.
An elongated hinge 41 has some of its butt portions secured in a longitudinal recess in the bottom wall 13 of the intermediate portion 10 of the case, and other butt portions secured to elongated bottom flanges of the sid members It and IT. The hinge is disposed substantially along the center of the bottom Wall 13 and the bottom flanges of the side members extend inwardly to the hinge thereby covering the entire external surface of the bottom wall of the intermediate member. The top wall 12 of the intermediate member in extends at its edges outwardly beyond the external surfaces of the side walls [4 and [5 to provide flanges or beads overlying the upper flanges of the side members l6 and l! and these overlying flanges extend around both ends of the intermediate member so that the top and end flanges of the side cover members fit within the top and end flanges provided by the outwardly projecting edge portions of the top wall l2. Strips 42 and 43 of suitable packing material, such as felt, are secured to the edge portions of the side walls 1 i and 15 of the intermediate member of the case in position to receive the edges of the top and end flanges of the respective side cover members l6 and I! so that the side cover members seal closely with the intermediate member. A carrying handle 44 is formed on or secured to the top wall I 2 of the intermediate portion so that the weight of the gun and equipment supported by the intermediate portion is transferred directly to the handle and the side cover members 16 and H are not subjected to any load.
The side cover members when closed are secured in closed condition by suitable latch or lock devices 45 and 46 which extend through the edge portions of tthe top wall 12 of the intermediate portion of the case and engage the top flange portions of the respective side cover members.
When the case is disposed on one side and the locks 45 and 46 released the top side cover member may be raised and turned about .the hinge 4| until it is disposed in the same plane gas the 'f lower side cover member. This will expose one side of the intermediate member I0 so that gun parts or other material may be removed from the cavities provided therein. The intermediate part may then be raised and turned about the hinge until its opposite'side is exposed so that gun parts or other contents may be removed from this second side of the intermediate por- 'tion. The case thus provides a conveniently accessible device which may be deposited upon the ground and will protect the gun parts and accessories-from 'contactwith the ground while in use.
The invention may be embodied'in otherspecific-forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment is therefore tobe considered in all respects as illustrative-and not restrictive, the scope :of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claim are therefore intendedto be embraced therein.
What is claimed:
Anarticle carrying casecomprising an inter- -mediatemember of rectangular shape having a top wall, a bottom wall, two end walls and=two side .walls provided with article receiving recesses, said intermediate member having its top and end walls extended at the opposite edges thereof to provide outwardly extending flanges,
two hollow covers each having a side wall, a bottom wall, a top Wall and two end Walls with the bottom wall having a width greater than one half the Width of the bottom wall of said intermediate member and the top and end walls of each cover having a width less than the Width of the cover bottom wall by one half the width of the bottom wall .of said intermediate member, the top and end :walls of each cover being receivable within the top and end wall flanges at the corresponding side of said intermediate member, a single hinge extending longitudinally of the bottom wall of said intermediate member along the mid-length location of the latter and secured to theubottom wall of said intermediate member and to the'bottom walls of both of said covers so that said covers are disposed at respectively opposite sideaof said intermediate member to enclose the side walls of the 1atter,.and a carrying handle secured to the top wall of said intermediate member.
