IINITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.4
CHARLES W. LYON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAP FOR CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,075, dated January 31, 1882.
Application filed December 5, 1881.
provements in Caps for Cans, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct and apply a cap to a can for containing oils,
Sac., that the cover can be readily applied and removed, and when applied will tightly close the can, will be protected from injury, and will not interfere With the compact packing of a number of cans together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section, 011 an exaggerated scale, of part of a can with myimproved cap; and Fig. 2, a view ofthe parts composing the cap detached from each other.
A is part of the body of the can, to the upper end ot' Which is secured by soldering or otherwise an internal ring, B, having at the top an external tlange, b, resting on the top of the can A, and at the bottom an internal flange, d, terminating in an annular V-shaped groove, e, which surrounds the central opening, a.
D is the cover, which is sunken so as to be adapted to fit inside the ring B, a liange,f, on the upper edge of the cover bearing on the iiange b ofthe ring and the under side of the cover bearing upon and compressing an elastic ring, t', deposited upon the flange d ofthe ring B, as shown in Fig. 1. rIhe cover D is confined to the ring B and caused to press upon the ring 'i by the engagement of internal lugs, m, on said ring B, with bayonet slots or recesses n, formedin the sides ofthe coverD; or a screw-thread or section of a screw-thread may take the place of said lugs and recesses, if desired, the two modes of fastening being deemed equivalent. y
In order to facilitate the lapplication of the coverD to the ring B, Iform in the bottom of the cover, around the edge of the same, a
(No model.)
- groove, fw, the lugs m entering this groove when the coveris first applied and serving to center the said cover and support the same while it is being turned to bring the vertical portions of the recesses n into line with the lugs. Before appl-ying the cover D a disk, E, of thin sheet metal-taggers tin, for instanceis applied to the mouth a of the can, this disk having a flanged edge adapted to the recess c, in which it is secured by a deposit of solder.
When it is desired to gain access to the contents of the can the cover D is first removed, and the taggers-tin disk then cut out by a suitable implement, and after the removal of so much ofthe contents of the can as may be the sunken cap D is protected from'injury,
while the can is being handled, and does not interfere-With the compact packing ot' a num,- ber of cans for transportation or storage.
'Eyes s may be formed on the cap for the ends of a bail, t, the latter being turned down fiat against the cap when not in use.
l claim as my inventionl. rlhe con'xbination of the can A, the inter. nal ring, B, having lugs m, and the slinken cov. er D, having'slots or recesses n, and an annular groove, w, as set forth.
2. The combination of the can A, the internal ring, B, having:` a flange, d, with annular groove c, the disk E, the sunken cover D, and the packing-rin g t', as set forth.
In testimony WhereofI have signed my name to this specication in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES W. LYON.
