CONTAINER CLOSURE Filed Dec. 12. 1947 E J 58 lllli Q INVENTOR. A 271/025. SMITH v v ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 3, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CONTAINER CLOSURE Arthur E. SmithQLos Angeles, Calif. Application December 12, 1947, Serial no; 791,428
This invention relates to a container closure.
The general object of the invention is to provide a closure for use on bottles and other containers and wherein the closure is of an improved type providing for the ready preparation of a fresh solution.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel container closure which includes a stop per portion and a resilient and/or flexible portion, the movement of which causes a tablet to be released into a vehicle in the container to thus prepare a fresh solution.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container closure including a displaceable or rupturable portion and whereinrnovement of a tubular member carried by a, portion of the closure serves to ,displace or break the rupturable portion after which a hypodermic needle may be inserted through the tubular member to extract the preparation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a closure having a tubular member therein and wherein the closure may be pierced by a hypodermic needle which may then pass through the tubular portion into the container to extract the contents of the container.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
The figure is a central, sectional view, showing a portion of a container with my improved closure thereon.
In the figure I show my invention wherein a bottle 4!), having a neck 4| and a collar 42, is provided with a closure 43 which has an internally flanged skirt 44 engaging the collar 42. The closure 43 includes an inwardly directed sleeve portion 45 which has an axial recess 46 and a reduced recess 41 in which a tablet 48 is arranged. A sealing disc 49 in the recess 46 serves to hold the tablet in place and normally prevent its contact with the vehicle 50 in the bottle. The stopper includes an outwardly opening axial recess closed at the inner end by a diaphragm 52. A flexible cap 53, having a skirt 54 and a bead 55, engages the closure 43. The upper end of the cap 53 has a collar 56 which may be molded therein. The collar 56 includes a hole 51 which communicates with a piercing member or tube 58, the lower end of which is sharpened as at 59.
In using the closure, the cap 53 is depressed,
. 4C1aims. (Cl.l28---272) thus pushing inwardlly the tube 58, the sharp- 55 ened end 59 of which piercesthe diaphragm 52 and thus engages the tablet and thereafter causes removal of the disc 49 so that a fresh solution is prepared.
The disc 49 is inert in the solution made from the preparation 48 and does not contaminate the solution.
In the present Within the auxiliary In applicants copending application Ser. No.
4,089, filed January 24, 1948, the claim is directed to the main and outer closure, wherein the main closure includes a cupped diaphragm portion and the outer closure includes a stem which engages 31:16 cupped portion to cause release of a sealing isc.
In copending application Ser. No. 4,193, filed January 24, 1948, the claim is directed to the closure which includes a corrugated diaphragm engageable by a releasing stem carried by an auxiliary closure.
In copendin-g application Ser. No. 791,429, filed December 12, 1947, the claims are directed to a main and an auxiliary closure, with a flanged piercing member extending through a hole in the auxiliary closure and movable with the auxiliary closure to displace a sealing disc carried by the main closure.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have invented a novel container closure which can be economically manufactured and which is highly efficient for its intended purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A closure comprising a main body portion and a flexible integral end closure portion, said main body portion having an axial recess therein, sealing means closing said recess, a medicinal tablet in said recess, sealing means closing the inner end of said recess, said body portion having an axial hole therein extending outwardly from said sealing means, and a tubular piercing member having a lower end disposed in said hole, said tubular piercing member having a flange thereon, said end closure member having a recess receiving said flange, said tubular member being movable with said end closure portion to release said discs.
2. A closure comprising a main body portion and a flexible auxiliary closure portion, said main body portion having a skirt adapted to engage the outer surface of the neck of a bottle, said body portion having a sleeve portion adapted to fit within a bottle neck, said sleeve portion having an axial recess, a sealing disc closing said recess, a medicinal tablet in said recess, a diaphragm closing the inner end of the recess, said body portion having an axial hole therein extending outwardly from said diaphragm, said auxiliary closure including a body having a skirt thereon, said last mentioned skirt engaging the periphery of said body portion, and a tubular piercing member having a sharpened lower end disposed in said hole, said tubular piercing member having a flange thereon, said flange being embedded in said auxiliary closure member.
3. A closure comprising a main body portion and an auxiliary closure portion, said main body portion having a skirt adapted to engage the outer surface of the neck of a bottle, said body portion having a sleeve portion adapted to fit within a bottle neck, said sleeve portion having an axial recess therein and having a second axial recess smaller than the first recess, a sealing disc in said first recess, a medicinal tablet in said second recess, a diaphragm closing the inner end of the inner recess, said body portion having an axial hole therein extending outwardly from said diaphragm, said auxiliary closure including a flexible body having a skirt thereon, said skirt engaging the periphery of said body portion, a tubular piercing member having a sharpened lower end disposed in said hole, said tubular piercing member having a flange thereon, said flange being embedded in said auxiliary closure member, said outer periphery of said outer auxillary closure member having an indentation aligned with said tubular member, said tubular piercing member being movable with said auxiliary closure member when the latter is flexed to puncture said diaphragm and enter the recess 4 and release the sealing disc.
4. A closure comprising a main body portion and an auxiliary closure portion, said main body portion having a skirt adapted to engage the outer surface of the neck of a bottle, said skirt having an internal flange adapted to engage beneath a bottle neck flange, said skirt also having an external flange, said body portion having a sleeve portion adapted to fit within a bottle neck, said sleeve portion having an axial recess therein and having a second axial recess smaller than the first recess, a sealing disc in said first recess, a medicinal tablet in said second recess, a diaphragm closing the inner end of the inner recess, said body portion having an axial hole therein extending outwardly from said diaphragm, said auxiliary closure including a flexible body having a skirt thereon, said skirt engaging the periphery of said body portion and engaging the flange on said body portion, said auxiliary closure skirt having an external flange thereon, and a tubular piercing member having a sharpened lower end disposed in said hole, said tubular piercing member having a flange thereon, said flange being embedded in said auxiliary closure member, said outer periphery of said outer auxiliary closure member having an indentation aligned with said tubular member, said tubular piercing member being movable with said auxiliary closure member when the latter is flexed to puncture said diaphragm and enter the recess and release the sealing disc.
