Description

(Mode 1.)
S. WHEELER.
PORTABLE WRITING OASE.
Patented Deo. 6,1881.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SETE WHEELER, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
PORTABLE WRITING-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,467, dated December 6, 1881.
Application filed September 23,1881.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SETII VHEELER, aoitizen ofthe UnitedStates, and a resident of Albany, in the county otl Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Writing-Gases, of which the following is a specification.
These improvements relate, first, to a coinbination of a case for retaining a roll of continuous sheets ot' note or letter paper with a Writing-tablet,on which such paper is nnwound, as may be desired, for use; seeond,to the combination ot' the case for retaining a rollof note or letter paper and the writing-tablet with a knife-edge cross-bar, on which the portions of the paper written upon may be severed from oiof the roll ot' paper, third, to the combination ot' a roll of note or letter' paper with a case in which it is contained and a tablet over which the paper is drawn f'or use.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portable writingcase constructed according to my improvements. Fig. 2 is a moditication of such a portable case as shown in Fig. l, also in perspective. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal cross-section taken through the line x x of Fig. l.
A is a tablet..
is a roll of continuons single sheets otl note or letter paper drawn from a case, A', connected to one end of the tablet A.
O is a knife-edge cross-bar placed across the other end of the tablet, on which the portion of the paper written -upon (suiicient to make up one sheet otnote or letter paper) is severed, as seen in Fig. l.
D is a pad or piece of blotting-paper,which may, if desired, be placed underneath the sheet written upon, so that after severing the sheet from the roll it may be relieved of surplus ink.
E is the cover to the opening in the case A', through which the roll ot'paper is inserted in the said case. The paper is drawn by its end out through a slot, fr, in the lower portion of the case onto the tablet A.
In the moditication shown in Fig. 2 the paper may be cut oli' by means ot' a cutter, F, at-
tached by pivot to the lower portion ofthe case A just above the opening where the paper runs out from the said case, the cross-bar C being pivoted at I, so as to be swung oft' to (Model.)
one side of the tablet A, in order to release the portion of paper written upon for that purpose.
N is a socket, into which the free end of the cross-bar rests and is retained, in order to keep down the sheet ofpaper. The outer edge ot' the paper is beneath the cross-bar while it is being Written upon.
These portable writing-cases are for ustA in the drawing-room, in the counting-house, or in car, boat, or open eld. For artist tour ists the note-paper may be replaced by sketching-paper. The tablet portion can be constructed of Iiexible material, so that after use it may be folded up around and be concentric with the roll-case, in order to allow of greater compactness for stowage away.
Sonie ot the advantages ot' these improvements are as follows: Qnitea large aniountot" note-paper cati be very compactly stored ready for use at all times,in a convenient form. rllhe paper is perfectly protected from dust, dirt, and dampness. More than double the amount o t' paper can be so stored than is bound in the ordinary paper pads, and no annoyance is experienced lroin gummed or pasted edges. When folded up the Writing-case can be easily, by reason ot' its cylindrical.forni, carried inthe pocket. A portable inkstand may be` attached to one ot its ends.
I claiml. The case for the roll ot' writing or sketching paper, in combination with the writingtablet on which said paper is unwonnd and sustained while in use, substantially as described.
2. The case for the roll of writing` or sketching paper and the tablet on which said paper is unwound and sustained while in use, in coinbination with the knite-edge crossbar, on which to sever the portion ot paper containing the writing or sketches from the rest ot' the roll, substantially as described.
3. As an article ot' manufacture, a portable writing-case consisting of the case or paper receptacle and the attached tablet, all arranged and adapted for use substantially as described.
