J. S. BULKELEY.
FINGER REST FOB PENOILS AND PEN HOLDERS.
(No Model.)
No; 249,893. Patented Nov. 22,1881.
Jaw/2Z0).
UNHED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
JOHN S. BULKELEY, OF BALLSTON SPA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO BENJAMIN R. LAWRENCE, OF SAME PLACE.
FINGER-REST FOR PENCILS AND PEN-HOLDERS.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,893, dated November 22, 18 81.
Application filed May 7, 1881.v (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN S. BULKELEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ballston Spa, in the county of Saratoga and State 5 0i New York, have invented Improvements in Finger-Rests for Pencils and Pen-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a triangular fingerrest, of metal or other material, adjustable to lo and upon a pencil or pen-holder; and my improvementparticular] y eonsistsin making such triangular finger-rest with projecting ends, so formed as to be adjustable either individually or collectively, by which means the said rest is adapted to hold securely in any position to which it maybe set, and to be readily adjusted up or down or around the pencilor pen-holder, and to work with equal success on pencils or pen-holders of various sizes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of myimproved finger-rest. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line 2 2, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3, Fig.2. Fig. at is a perspective view, showing it in use on a leadpencil. 1
A represents the bodyof a finger-rest, which I prefer to make of sheet metal, or it may be made of other material. It is triangular in 0 cross-section, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, and is formed at each end with three or more separate wings or projections, a, a a, preferably turned inward at their extremities, and adapted to be severally adjusted or collectively 3 5 bent toward or away from each other, so as to adapt the rest to pencils or pen-holders of various sizes, and also to vary its position on the pen-holder by bringing one angle further from the axis, if desired. It may be moved freely lengthwise, and will remain securely in any 40 position to which it is set, or it maybe turned around, so as, in the case of a pen-holder, to adapt the triangle to any desired position relaatively to the pen-point. It is also adapted to be turned end for end, and the two ends may 5 be made unlike in form, if desired.
The attachment-is adapted to be used on all ordinary-sized round or hexagonal pencils. It is capable of turning or sliding Without destroying its griping power, and as the pencil requires sharpening it can be readily shoved back and stillcoutinue to serve its purpose in the same manner as a stationary linger-rest.
My improved finger-rest is adjusted and applied to a pencil or pen-holder of any ordinary size and shape without destroyingits triangular form or distorting its three flat sides. The insertion of the pencil into the restdoes not throw up any protuberance or cause c011- vexity of surface.
I do not claim, broadly, a triangular metal or other finger-rest, as I know that is not new, but
What I do claim as my invention is- A triangular metal or other rest, furnished with projecting griping-ends,formedsubstantially as described, so as to be individually or collectively adjustable, by which means the said rest may be turned or moved lengthwise, so as to be adjustable in both directions, and so as to fit large or small or unequal-sized penholders or pencils, all as herein shown and described.
