(01. 128-284) The presentinvention relates to a garment and more particularly to a diaper or the like,,such as used for babies and to a novel standard "method for folding and tying diaper cloths.

Mothers have many ways of applying diaper cloths to their babies, such as by various folding arrangements. Usually these folds either make the diaper too small for easy pinning on or the folds are so thick that th pins are very difficult to apply through the several folds, and often the safety pins used break open due to the strain of holding several folds of diaper cloth and stick the baby. Accordingly, a general object of the present invention is to provide a novel pinless diaper, whereby the diaper cloth has a standard fold arrangement.

Another object is to provide in a diaper cloth, a novel arrangement and predetermined positioning of the strings or tapes to the cloth, so that the diaper is securely held applied in its standardly folded position and around the waist of the wearer.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of the garment and the novel method of folding the garment to a standard form, as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims, it being understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the specific details of construction.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 is a plan view of the diaper cloth spread out showing the several fold lines thereof for forming the same into the garment.

Figure 2 is a view of the cloth folded in half.

Figure 3 shows the same folded in at the sides prior to the next folding step,

Figure 4 shows the cloth folded and the relative position of the tie tapes.

Figure 5 shows a front view of the cloth after it is folded into the finished garment.

Figure 6 is a side View of the garment.

Figure 7 is a perspective view of the garment folded and fastened or tied together.

Referring to the drawing in detail, and first with reference to Figure 1, there is shown a rectangular sheet of material ll] having transverse marginal end portions 1 l and I2, and longitudinal marginal side portions l4 and 15. The respective marginal portions are folded over and hemmed and adjacent to respective ends thereof, the respective end of each transverse marginal portion is provided with the tie strings or tapes l6, ll, l8 and i9 respectively.

The respective strings I6 and I1 are secured to the respective corners of the marginal portion H, and the respective strings l8 and I9 are spaced in a short distance from the respective corners of the marginal portion l2 and secured thereto. Thus, when the sheet In is folded over in half end to end, the strings l8 and I9 will be positioned be tween the strings iii and i! (see Fig. 2).

The sheet Ill is provided with a central transverse fold line 2| arid intermediate the ends of this fold line is sewed the mid-section of a tape 22, the tie ends 23 and 2 5 of which are left free. These tie ends are respectively spaced from the adjacent longitudinal edges i l and i5 a distance equal to the spacing of the tapes l8 and I9 respectively from the edges Hi and It).

The sheet Ill, before being folded in half on line 2|, may first be folded in angularly from the said sides of the longitudinal margins on lines 25 and 26 and 21 and 28 to provide for a smooth fit at the crotch portion of the garment, or this may be folded later as shown in Fig. 3. Then it is folded in half on the center line 2! at the tape 22. After this folding step the tie ends or tape ends 23 and 24 are dangling free at the fold on the center line 2| and the tape ends it, i'l, l8 and I9 are at the now opposite marginal ends with the respective ones of the tape ends l8 and i9 substantially opposite to the respective ones of tie ends 23 and 24. Then a baby to be dressed in the garment is positioned on the folded sheet with his or her waist approximately at the marginal ends H and I2 and the folded strip is again folded in half upwardly over the babys stomach (see Fig. 4). Thus, there is provided a double thickness of material at the front and back, that is, a two-ply front panel 30' and a two-ply rear panel 3|. With the material so folded the tie strips 23 and I8 and 24 and I9 are adjacent each other at the babys hips and are then easily tied together to form the waist of the garment. The tape ends 16 and Ill attached to the respective corners of marginal portion l I now remain untied and are pulled together and tied across the front of the garment (see Fig. 5).

'As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an additional pad 32 may be placed so as to fit between the two plies of rear panel 31. Thus, there is provided an easily applied diaper cloth for babies, having a novelly arranged series of tie tapes and fold lines, for producing a comfortably snug, neat and smooth pinless garment.

While I have specifically described and illustrated my invention for one embodiment only, it is to be understood that the same is not limited thereto, except as defined in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

l. The method of folding into a garment a rectangular single ply sheet of diaper cloth having tie strings at each end and a centrally secured transversely disposed tie tape providing two tie strings midway between the ends of the sheet, comprising the steps of folding the material on a transverse line along the line of said tie tape to provide a substantially square two ply body, folding in each corner of the square at the secured ends of the tape strings whereby to give to the body a short edge and an opposite parallel long edge, folding the body: in half between said edges to form tworplyf; frontva-nd ream-panels, tying the said panels together with the tie tape strings and certain of the end tie strings to form a waist portion, then lapping the corners of the rear panel over the front panel, and then tying said corners together with the remaining end tie-"strings;
