PROTECTIVE DOORPLATE Henry Ausub el, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application.November..30, 1946,--Serial No. 713,208'- 2 Claims.
Thislinvention relates toa door plate adapted:
to :be;disposed upon the-door to-preventthe formation of finger'marks'uponthedoor adJacent the; knob portionrthereof.
It isran object of the present invention to provide a:.p1ate of Celluloid orplastic adapted to be fitted. on a door of a-room. or of a piece of furnitune .-so,. as to preventthe door from becoming soiled nearthehandle thereof and whereinthis plate .canbe easily and simply. applied by the use of:tacks..
It is another object of the present invention to provide a .door plate to prevent the door from beingsoiled, and which will extend over the edge of the :door fora part -of the distance and wherein the portion extending over the edge of the door can be retainednthereoniwithout the use of tacks entering. the same from the edge of the door.
According to the invention the plate has portions cut out on its front so thatthe knob and lock can extend from-.,within the plate. At the edge of the plate adjacent theedge of the door.
there is provided a portion adapted to.extend part 1way,over the edge and be connected thereto. According to'a modified form "of the invention, this portion has at its end an inturned lip adapted to fit within a recess formed in the edge of the door thus to prevent this portion from being peeled Off by the engagement of the portion with the door jamb. This inturned lip can be connected rigidly within the slot by a brad extending from the front portion of the plate through the wood of the door into the slot and through the inturned lip into the wood of the door at the opposite side of the slot. To facilitate the location of the brad in the inturned lip, there is provided a transverse slot extending from the edge of the door to the slot that receives the inturned lip.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a door with a plate connected thereto in accordance with one form of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary cross sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 through the door and plate, looking in the direction of the arrows thereof.
Fig 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the plate removed from the door.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of a door bearing. a-plate of a modified form and having the inturned lip on the portion that extends across theedge of the door.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view, in section, taken. on line 55 of Fig 4, looking in the direction of the arrows thereof.
Fig. 6 is an end elevational View of a fragment of the door, looking .upon the edge thereof and into the vertical and transverse slots into which the plate parts are extended.
Fig. 7 Ba fragmentary view of the doorwith portions-broken away to show the upper end of i the vertical slot.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view of the upper end of the-modified plate and showing the location of the brad extending from the front portion and into the inturned lip.
Fig. 9 shows aperspective view of another shape of-door plate.
The-door plate, according to the present invention, includes a one-piece body ll for use on a door It The door 10 maybe hinged by hinge plates E2 and may have a door knob 53 and a key hole plate I l. The plate H has a front portion I5 and a portion [6 adapted to extend over the edge ll of the door. Intermediate the height of the plate and within the front portion are two out out areas l8 and [9 adapted to receive respectively the door knob 13 and key hole plate I l so that plate portions will extend well around the same. The top and bottom corners can be cut away as indicated at 2| to render the plate more fanciful. The plate or shield as it may be called may be made of Celluloid or other plastic or like material, the principal object being merely to provide a thin light and washable cover over that area of the door. The plate is placed upon the door edge and can be fixed thereto by tacks 22 in the front portion and tacks 23 in the portion that extends over the door edge.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 4 to 8, there is shown a modified form of plate. The principal difference lies in the formation of the portion of the plate that extends over the door edge and to the means for retaining the same upon the door edge. A door 24 is provided with a vertically extending slot 25 in the edge thereof. A plate 26 has a portion 21 adapted to extend over the door edge and this portion 21 has an inturned lip 28 adapted to fit into the vertically-extending slot 25. The plate 26 has a front portion 29 into which tacks 3| are extended to retain the front 3 of the plate at its inner edge thereof. At the outer edge of the front portion 29 is a brad 32.
This brad is long enough to extend from the front portion through the slot and inturned lip 28 and into the portion of the door edge at the opposite side of the slot 25 whereby to retain the lip wtihin the slot. In order to facilitate the location of the brad within the inturned lip 28 the brad may extend through the lip 28 while the plate is being inserted upon the door edge. A transverse slot 33 in the door edge will receive the brad as the plate is moved inwardly toward the edge of the door with the portion 2! brought flush with the door edge. Thereafter the brad 32 can be driven into the opposite side of the slot.
In Fig. 9 the door plate I is shown with a single cut-out portion 29 which may be of any suitable size to expose either the key plate or the door knob or both.
It is to be understood that the door plates may be made in all colors and shapes, to fit any type of door.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A door plate comprising a front portion adapted to extend upon the front wall of the door, a portion at right angles to the front portion adapted to lie over the edge of the door, an inturned lip upon the portion adapted to extend over the edge of the door and adapted to extend into a vertically extending recess on the edge of the door whereby to retain that portion 7 within the door, said brad being mountable in the plate upon the plate being applied to the door edge and adapted to slide into a transverse slot within the door edge extending from the front face to the vertical slot whereby when the nail is driven it will traverse the vertical slot and the inturned lip to engagement with the door edge material at the removed side of the slot.
2. A protective door plate for use with a door having a door knob and a key hole plate extending from at least one face thereof and adjacent one edge thereof, comprising a one-piece body having a front portion attached to the said one face of the door adjacent the said one edge thereof, and a second portion continuin at right angles from one side edge of said front portion and attached to the said one edge of the door, said front portion having recesses extended in from its other side edge, the material of said front portion defining said recesses being engaged about and exposing the door knob and key hole plate, said door being formed with a slot in the said one edge thereof and with slots extending between said slot and the said one face of the door, an inturned lip continuing from the free edge of said second portion and extending into said first mentioned slot, and brads passing through said front portion, through said secondmentioned slots and through said inturned lip and into the material of the door on the side of said first-mentioned slot remote from said second-mentioned slots securing said inturned lip in position within said first-mentioned slot.
