The machine is equipped with an electric motor 9 having a belt drive 40 with a pulley H on the drum Z for rotating the same, the showing in this respect being for illustrative and not limiting purposes.
The drum '2 is prqvidedwith a, series of interior bafiles |2 secured to and extending radially inward from the cylindrical wall 3. The structure here may be ofthe form desired. Specifically, the bafiles l2- shown are fashioned of the same metal as the drum walls and are substantially U- shaped in form with substantially parallel, flat, sidewalls l3, l3 joined by a rounded or curved wall section I I at the outer edge of the baflle.
The side walls l3 of the baflles l2; abut against the inner surface ofthe drum wall 3 and are secured thereto inany' desired manner, a bent over prong construction (-not shown) being one form. The prongs are inserted through certain of the perforations l-5- provided in the drum wall 3 and clinched thereto. The perforations I5 are shown inFig; 2- and in the actual machine are distributed; over the drum wall 3 to provide openings for the passage of the vapors of the cleaning-solyent and the heated air flowed through the machine and the drum in a drying operation.
The cushion pad of my invention is used with each baffle 12 as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. The pad which is marked 5' is applied over the outer surface or the baifle l2 and provides a cushion to prevent breakage of; the buttons or other projections on-the garments when tumbled within the drum. It will be noted from Figs. 1- and 2 that the pad lfi flts completely over the baflf'le l2 about its rounded outer edge M and extends relatively close to. Where the side walls IQ of the baffle abut the drum wall 3., Moreover, the pad I6 is substantiallyco-extensive in length with the baflle l2.
In accordance with my invention, the pad l6 comprises a layer construction, a base layer l1 substantially coeextensive with the length width of the pad and a pair of outer layers l8, Hi at the opposite sides of the pad and overlap ping the base layer H along its lqn itudinal mar ginal portions. The layers I! and I8 18;; are preferably of canvas or canvas-like material and are secured together along the outer longitudinal edges of thebase layer by over-cast or binding loop stitching-l9, H] as indicated in Figs. 3 and. 4. The outer layers l8, we are confined to the sides of the pad and terminate short of each other along the central longitudinal portion of the pad.
Arranged in the pad structure is a plastic layer 20- extendlng; betweenthe opposed, spaced. edges of the outer layers l8, law and secured thereto by overcast stitching 2|, 2| as detailed in Figs. 3 and 4.
The plastic layer 20 is disposed to extend over the rounded edge M of a bafile l2 and down the sides thereof to guard against wear on the pad by contact of the garment articles and its buttons therewith. The plastic layer 20 is relatively strong to withstand strain and abrasive wear. Also, the outer surface of the plastic layer '20 being smooth and glazed-like allows the garments and its buttons to readily and easily slide over the pad. Moreover, this plastic layer 20 will withstand and not crack under the heat conditions to which the drum may be subjected as in a drier operation, running up to 350 F.
Included in the pad structure I6 is a cushion layer 22 between the base and the outer layers l1 and I8, iiia and directly beneath the plastic layer 20. The cushion layer 22 may be made of cotton or felted-like material and has its side portions extended under the outer layers I8, |8a and there secured to the base layer IT by stitching 23, 23 as shown in Fig. 4.
To increase the cushioning factor of the pad IS, the longitudinal edge portions of the plastic layer 20 are folded over on themselves as at 24, 24 at the stitching 23, 23. This construction disposes the plastic layer 20 out of flatwise contact with the cushion layer 22 and presents a spacing for increasing the cushioning property of the pad and to enable the pad to protect the garment buttons.
The pad It may be secured to the selected baflle 12 in any preferred manner. In the drawing, I have shown a securin means in the form of a series of eyelets or openings 25, adjacent to the side edges of the pad and bound by metal grommets 26, 25, the latter being preferably of brass. Each bafile I2 is provided in its side walls [3 with apertures 21, 21 to register with the eyelets 25 to receive a lacin or lacings 28 to releasably fasten the pads [6 in place. The lacings 28 may be tied together at their free ends on the exterior of the pad, one of the tyings being indicated at 23.
The pad construction is simple and effective in construction. The canvas base layer l1 protects the softer cushion layer 22 from contact with the bafile l2 and the plastic layer 20 and the outer layers [8, Mia protect the cushion layer 22 from contact with the garment articles. The plastic layer 20 gives the pad strength to readily withstand wear and relatively high temperatures without cracking. Hence, my improved pad is stronger and longer lasting than the pads heretofore employed.
Providing the plastic layer 20 with folded margins 24, 24 increases the cushioning property of the pad to prevent button breakage and also reduces undue strain in bending the pad over the baffle member l2. The overcast stitching is also used to bind the end edges of the canvas'layers I! and [8, I811 as indicated at in Fig. 3. It will be noted that the eyelets 25 are beyond the side edges of the plastic layer, being confined to the canvas layers.
The details of construction and arrangement of parts shown and described may be variously changed and modified without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, except as pointed out in the annexed claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a button protecting pad of the character described, a base layer substantiallyco-extensive with the length and width of the pad, a pair of outer layers overlapping and secured to the base layer along the longitudinal marginal portions thereof, said outer layers terminating short of each other along the longitudinal central portion of the pad, said base and outer layers being constituted of fabric material, and a plastic layer extending between the opposed, spaced, edges of the outer layers and secured to the latter, said plastic layer serving to increase the wear and resistant properties of the pad.
2. In a button protecting pad of the character described, a base layer substantially co-extensive with the length and width of the pad, a pair of outer layers overlapping and secured to the base layer along the longitudinal marginal portions thereof, said outer layers terminating short of each other along the longitudinal central portion of the pad, said base and outer layers being of fabric material, and a plastic layer extending between the opposed, spaced, edges of the outer layers and secured to the latter, said plastic layer being of a folded character to increase its cushioning properties of the pad.
3. In a button protecting pad of the character described, a base layer substantially co-extensive with the length and width of the pad, a pair of outer layers overlapping and secured to the base layer along the longitudinal marginal portions thereof, said layers terminating short of each other along the longitudinal central portion of the pad, said base and outer layers being of fabric material, and a plastic layer extending between and secured to the outer layers adjacent to the spaced edges thereof, said plastic layer having its edges folded upon themselves where secured to the adjacent of the outer layers to increase the cushioning properties of the pad.
4. In a button protecting pad of the character described, a base layer substantiall co-extensive with the length and width of the pad, a pair of outer layers overlapping and secured to the base layer along the longitudinal marginal portions thereof, said outer layers terminating short of each other along the longitudinal central portion of the pad, said base and other layers being of fabric material, a plastic layer extending between the opposed, spaced, edges of the outer layers and secured to the latter, and a cushion layer interposed between the base and plastic layers and having its marginal portions inserted between the base and the outer layers where the latter are overlapping relation.
5. The pad structure of claim 1 characterized by the fact that there are fastening means at the sides of the pad for releasability securing it in its place of use.
6. A button protector pad for the bafiles of laundering machines and the like, said pad comprising a base layer for application to a bafile to cover the same, and a top layer of plastic material carried by said base layer, said top layer having a slick wear resistant surface for exposure to the button equipped garments under treatment.
'7. A button protector pad fOr the baffles of laundering machines and the like, said pad comprising a base layer for application to a baffle to cover the same, a top layer of plastic material carried by said base layer and having a slick wear resistant surface for exposure to the button equipped garments under treatment, and padding material interposed between said base and top layers for cushioning said exposed surface.
8. A button protector pad for the bafiles of laundering machines and the like, said pad comprising a centrally disposed longitudinally extended cushion portion adapted to seat upon the projecting edge of a bafile, said cushion portion including a layer of padding material, and a pair of substantially fiat longitudinally extended mar ginal portions disposed at opposite sides of said cushion portion, said marginal portions being adapted to seat on opposite sides of said bafile and having means for attachment thereto so as to retain said cushion portion in place on the baflle.
9. A button protector pad for the bafiles of laundering machines and the like, said pad comprising a centrally disposed longitudinally extended cushion portion adapted to seat upon the projecting edge of a, bafiie, said cushion portion including a layer of padding material, lines of stitching at opposite sides of said cushion portion for retaining said paddin material against lateral displacement, and a pair of substantially flat longitudinally extended marginal portions for attachment to the sides of the bafiie to retain the cushion portion in place thereon.
