COMBINAT-QION SHIPPING AND DISPLAY PACKAGE FOR TYPEWRITERS I Filed June 21, 1945 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR FagosmcK c. EDELSTON v ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 11, 1949 COMBINATION SHIPPING AND DISPLAY PACKAGE FOR TYPEWRITERS Frederick CJEdelston, Milwaukee, Wis., assignor 'to {Jlarvan Corporation, Milwaukee, Wis.
Application June'Zl, 1945, Serial No. 600,710
2' (3laims. i
This invention vappertains to packaging and shipping, and more particularly to the-dehydrated packaging of machines and the like, which are susceptible to corrosion, mildewor mold.
One of the recent developments in-the packaginglof machines and othendevices which are subjected to rust, for shipping-or storage, consists of enclosing the partor machine to be protected in a moisture-vapor-proof -caslng,'-and withdrawing theair .from within the casing and eliminating the moisture in-the casingby a desiccant. The casing with its enclosed machine is then'crated or boxed.
My invention has for one of its'primary objects to provide a novel means for enclosing and supporting the machine (such as a typewriter) in a flexible casing in such a manner *that when the machine :reaches its destination, the same can be attractively displayed on the shelves of a merchant without the necessityof removing the casing, 50 that the machine will still be protected from corrosion, mildew, :mold or dust while being offered for sale.
The desiccant is usually placed in bags which are tied to the machine parts. This-not only hides parts of the machine from view, but after the desiccant has absorbed a certain amount of moisture, the bags become damp and tend to rust the parts of the machine against which they are tied.
It is therefore another salient object .of my invention to provide novel means for placing and holding the bags of desiccant in the casing in such a mariner that the same will effectively perform their usual .function and .at the same time permit the effective displaying of the-machine.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, ar-
rangement and formation .of parts, as will be hereinafter more specificallypdeseribed, claimed, andillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings:
Figure -1 is a perspective view :showing a typewriter protected by a casing in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is .a verticalsectional view through a shipping .box with the typewriter and casing therein, the view illustrating one means of crating or boxing the typewriter and its casing.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view through the casing and the supporting base, illustrating my novel means for supporting the typewriter at an angle on the baseboard and for holding the shock pads free of the typewriter support.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, showing the bags of desiccant in place in accordance with my invention.
'Figure'5 is aview similar to Figure 1,'but showing an-ornamental advertising band around the edge of the base panel, and
Figurefi is-an enlarged detail vertical sectional view through the base panel taken on the line 6-45 of Figure 5, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the-several views, the letter B generally indicates a bag or casing for enclosing and protecting a typewriter T .or other machine. While I have illustrated my invention applied to a typewriter, obviously the invention can be applied'to other machines, such as adding machines, and the like.
The casing B itself can be made from any preferred type of moisture and Vapor-proof transparent material that can be heat sealed. One well known type of this material is placedon the market under the trade .name Pliofilm. The casing is folded to form a bag and in accordance with my invention, a sheet of Pliofilm or like material is taken and folded on a central transverse line. The longitudinal edges of .the folded sheet are secured together by .heat, as at ill. The typewriter or other machine is slipped into this bag in such a manner that one side wall of the bag i lowermost and the other side wall uppermost. The end of the bag is disposed at'the front of the typewriter. This gives a clear, unobstructed view of the typewriter in thebag and the transverse edges of the bag are heatsealed as at 'l I after other steps for protecting the machine have been taken. The typewriter and the bag B are placed on a supporting base plate or panel I2, which is preferably formed from plywood. The edges of the plywood can be provided with an ornamental paper band [3 so as to render the base plate more or less attractive to the eye, and this paper band-can be provided with anysuitable type ofadvertising. The band can be placed around the base plate l2 .at the verystart, or at a later time as will be set forth.
In accordance with my invention, the typewriter is supported on the panel by means of front blocks l4 and a pair or rear blocks IS. The blocks are disposed under the legs of the typewriter and are placed inside the bag B against the lower wall of the bag. As clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2, the rear pair of blocks 15 are of a greater height than the pair of blocks l4, and
the upper faces or both pairs of blocks are at an angle to the horizontal panel. This allows the supporting Of the typewriter at an angle within the bag. Hence, my invention has for one of its primary objects the provision of a combination display device for a typewriter and a moisture protecting device.
In order to firmly hold the typewriter on the blocks and on the base plate, the base plate and the blocks are provided with inclined registering openings and bolts l6 are placed through these openings in such a manner that the upper ends of the bolts can be threaded into the legs of the typewriter. The openings in the base plate or panel I 2 are indicated by the reference character I! and the openings in the blocks areindicated by the reference character l8.
One of the important features of my invention is to provide means whereby the typewriter can be bolted solidly to the blocks and baseboard so that the typewriter will not twist or sway on the blocks or baseboard. This is accomplished by rendering the rubber cushion pads 20 of the typewriter free of the blocks and these cushions are held above the upper surface of the blocks. This is accomplished by threading hollow screws 2| into the bottom of the typewriter and these screws hold the cushions 2B in place. The bolts I6 are then threaded into the hollow screws as is clearly shown in Figure 3. A spacing shim or nut 22is placed on each bolt between the pairs of blocks l4 and I and the lower ends of the hollow screws 2!. These spacers 22 are of a sufficient thickness to hold the cushions 2|] above the blocks.
During the placing of the bolts l6in place, the same can be coated with a suitable sealing compound so that the holes made in the lower wall of the bag will be sealed. If preferred, the lower faces of the blocks can also be coated with a sealing compound.
After the typewriter has been placed in position within the bag and secured to the base plate,
bags 23 of a desiccant, such as a silica gel, are placed within the barrier. In accordance with my invention, these bags are placed under the typewriter and are wedged between the pairs of blocks. This holds the bags in place and the bags are more or less hiddenfrom view and do not detract from the appearance of the package, and permits a full view of the typewriter.
After the bags of silica gel are placed in position, the rear edges of the bag B are partly sealed and the air is withdrawn from the bag or barrier, after which the edges are tightly sealed as indicated at H. If desired, the typewriter so packed can be placed with the base-plate l2 in a boX for shipping or storing, and suitable cushioning pads can be placed around the typewriter and between.
the base plate I2 and the bottom wall of the box.
However, I prefer to use the base plate as the,
When the box reaches its destination, the screws 29 can be removed and the typewriter in the bag B and on the base plate I2 can be used as a complete display unit, and the bag will still protect the typewriter against moisture. It is to be noted that the holding bolts [6 are countersunk within the lower face of the base plate l2.
When the bag B and the base plate are removed from the box, the ornamental strip 13 can be glued around the edges of the base plate and the strip will then hide the holes 30, made by the screws 29, from view. This ornamental strip can be placed within the box at the time of the boxing of the typewriter.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that I have provided a combination dehydrated package and display device for typewriters and similar machines.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of my invention, but what I claim, as new is:
1. A combination display and moisture-proof package comprising a rigid base plate and a transparent moisture-proof bag on said base plate for receiving a machine to be protected, the machine being of the type having resilient cushion pads at its corners, internally threaded hollow screws for holding the pads on the machine, front and rear pairs of blocks arranged within the bag and under said pads, bolts extending through the base plate and blocks and threaded into said hollow screws, and spacing members on saidbolts between the blocks and hollow screws of a sufficient height to hold the cushion pads above the blocks.
2. A combination display and moisture-proof package comprising a rigid base plate and a transparent moisture-proof bag on said base plate for receiving a machine to -.be protected, the machine being of the type having resilient cushion pads at its corners, internally threaded hollow screws for holding the pads on the machine, front and rear pairs of blocks arranged within the bag and under said pads, bolts extending through the base plate and blocks and threaded into said hollow screws, and spacing memberson said bolts between the blocks and hollow screws of a sufficient height to hold the cushion pads above the blocks, said blocks and bolts being arranged at an angle whereby the machine will be held at an attractive display angle.
