JAMES C.MORTENSEN,
ATTOR N EYS Patented Apr. 20, 1948 uni-rep PATENT oerce RESPIRAI'OR :Iames C. Montensen, .Prin'ceton, Ill.
Application 'ZIrily'TG, 1946, "Serial No. 683,900
5 0laims. 1 My invention relates to respirators -antiunore particularly to respirators "tor people suffering from hayfeverand *forpeopie workingfin anatmosphere laden with dust 'or :chargedwith fumes. "The object of my invention is to provide 'a respirator held in position w'itlrodtthe use (if a band surrounding the head, WHBI'byfthB discomfor't caused byperspirationarrd dust 'ispractically eliminated.
A further object of .myinvention is to provide a respirator equipped with exchangeable nose pieces and a mouthpiece, permitting the user of the respirator to snrokea cigarette while wearing the respirator.
Another object of my invention is to provide a respirator having a filter 'boxadapted "to receive specially treated filters exchangeably "therein.
An additional object of my invention is to provide a respirator being adapted to receive exchangeably'light sterile wool or cotton pads on the bottom of the nose :piecestgabsorb any occurring mucus flow.
Other objects of my invention may appear in the following specification describing my invention with reference to :the accompanying drawing illustratin a preferred embodiment of my invention.
It is however to be understood that my invention is not to be -limited or restricted to theexact construction and combination of parts described in the specification and shown in the drawing, but that such changes and modifications can be made, which fall within-the scope of the claims appended hereto.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front view of a respirator according to my invention, I
Figure 2 is a side view of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a filter box used in connection with the respirator according to my invention,
Figure 4 is a nose piece used on the respirator according to my invention, and
Figure 5 is a filter out to be used in the filter box shown in Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawing in detail the respirator forming the subject matter of my invention has a body l0 formed of any suitable plastic material of any shade and color. The body ID has a substantially convex front and a substantially concave back. On the back a mouth piece I I is formed adapted to be gripped and held by and between the lips or teeth of a user.
The mouth piece II is provided with a bore l2 ending in a cavity in the body Ill adapted to re- 2 ceive an'dh01d a'filter-box 13 snugly but removab'ly therein.
The top surface of the body 1-0 is arranged to slope rearwardly and has twocounterbored holes l' lthereinywhich end also in the filter box cavity in'th'e body. V
'In-'each of the counterb'ore's of the holes M a nose pie'ce i5 is located. These nose pieces are also made from plastic material and fit snugly but 'r'em'ova'bly into the counterbores. Each nose piece is shaped substantially cylindrical and has a'bore l6 thereinfbutthe upper end of each nose piece is narrowed down bybeing rounded oil as shown at H. The nose .pieces 5 do not extend all the way down to the bottom of the counterbores and the spaces between the lower ends of the .nose pieces and the bottoms of the counterbores are filled preferably with loosely packed sterilizedcotton or -lambs wool, as indicated at l 8.
The filter box :l3-h'as a rectangular top wall lo, a rectangular bottom -'wall 20, a rectangular back wall -24 and'two rectangular end walls 22. In the longitudinal center of the r-filter box l3 -a block as form'e'd extending transversely of the :box from the front tothe baGk. I
"This block '23 is provided with a centrally l'ocated h'o'le 24 therein, extending Tromthe front to the back of the' block, and in the rear'en'dof the hole 24 a finely perforated disk 25 is securely but removably inserted.
The bore I2 in the mouth piece II is arranged coaxially with the hole 24 and the perforated disk 25 therein. The hole 24 is of cigarette size,
, that means a cigarette 26 can be inserted in the hole 24 and can be smoked by the user of the respirator according to my invention.
In the top wall l9 of the filter box [3 two holes 21 are provided and located, so that they will coincide with the lower ends of the counterbored holes M in the body, when the filter box is placed in the body.
A specially cut filter 28 is illustrated in Figure 5. Such filters can be made from filter paper or other suitable material and can be folded to fit into the filter box. They can be treated with special chemicals, if the respirator is to be used in a fume laden atmosphere.
The respirator according to my invention can be made in several sizes, for instance for adults, medium size and for children, and the size of the nose pieces can be made in accordance with the size of the respirator.
The respirator, as described and shown, can be held by a light grip with the teeth or the lips and does not require the use of a band or the like surrounding the head of a user.
The cotton or lambs wool in the counterbores will absorb any flowing mucus and can easily be removed and replaced.
Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A respirator having a body including a mouth piece integrally formed with the body, and having a bore therein communicating with a cavity'in the body, and a pair of nose pieces extending upwardly from the body and having bores therein communicating with said cavity,
and a filter box adapted to be removably in-- serted in the cavity, and having two openings in its top communicating forwardly with the atmosphere, the body having two counterbored holes therein communicating with the holes the filter box and the nose pieces being removin the filter box and the nose pieces being removably inserted in the counterbores,
2. A respirator having a body including: a mouth piece integrally formed with the body, and having a bore therein communicating with a cavity in the body, and a pair of nose pieces extending upwardly from the body and having bores therein communicating with said cavity, and a filter box adapted to be removably inserted in the cavity, and having two openings in its top communicating forwardly with the atmosphere, the body having two counterbored holes therein communicating with the holes in the filter box and the nose pieces being removably inserted in the counterbores, and sterile, mucus absorbing material removably, and loosely packed in the counterbores underneath the nose pieces.
3. A respirator having a body including a mouth piece integrally formed with the body, and having a bore therein communicating with a cavity in the body, and a, pair of nose pieces extending upwardly from the body and having bores therein communicatin with said cavity, and a filter box adapted to be'removably inserted in the cavity, and having two openings in its top communicating forwardly with the atmosphere, the body having two counterbored holes therein communicating with the holes in the filter box and the nose pieces being removably inserted in the counterbores, the central portion of the filter box being formed like a blockand having a bore therein extending from front to back, adapted ably inserted in the counterbores, the central portion of the filter box being formed like a block and having a bore therein extending from front to back, adapted to receive and hold a cigarette, and communicating with the bore in the mouthpiece, and a perforated disk removably arranged in the rear portion of the bore in the block-like central portion of the filter box.
5. A respirator having a body including a mouth piece integrally formed with thebody, and havinga bore therein communicating with a cavity in the body, and a pair of nose pieces extending upwardly from the body and having bores therein communicating with said cavity, and a filter box adapted to be removably inserted in the cavity, and havin two openings in its top communicating forwardly withthe atmosphere, the body having two counterbored holes therein communicating with the holes in the filter box and the nose pieces being removably inserted in the counterbores, and sterile, mucus absorbing material removably and loosely packed in the counterbores underneath the nose pieces, and a filter material removably inserted in the filter box.
