This invention relates in general to a combination article and in particular to a combination purse.
This invention proposes a combination purse which is adapted to combine in a small and compact form a womans handbag, compact, keyring, change purse, and other articles commonly used. It is the purpose of this invention to provide a combination purse which is adapted to contain substantially all the articles which a woman normally carries on her person in a purse or the like.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a combination purse having in small and compact form, cosmetic supplies, a mirror, a change or money container and the like.
It is a still further object of this invention to provide in small and compact form, a miniature purse having a womans cosmetic supplies, money carrying means, and the like adapted to be carried on the person,
Additional objects of this invention as well as its construction and use will in part be obvious and will in part become apparent from the following disclosure. 7
For further comprehension of the invention,
and of the objects and advantages thereof, ref-.
erence will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a combination article according to one form of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the article in Fig. 1 in the open condition.
Fig 3 is a similar view of the article shown in the previous figures illustrating further features in its internal structure.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the article shown in the previous figures.
Fig. 5 is a similar View partially in section showing the position therein and the operation of a change carrying compartment.
Fig. 6 is a rear elevational View of the article shown in the previous figures.
Fig, 7 is a fragmentary enlarged view of a combination support member and change retaining member according to one form of the invention.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a combination article adapted to be securely fastened to the clothing of the user.
Referring to the figures in detail, there is shown a combination article generally designated 4 Claims. (01. 206 -38) 2 I0 comprising a relatively flat box-like container having a base H and a cover [2. A chain or strap is optionally secured to the container whereby it may readily be carried about.
The combination article ID is adapted to be opened to at least two positions, one of which is shown in Fig. 2 and another is shown in Fig. 3. In the position shown in Fig. 2, the combination article comprises a complete woman's compact having a chain handle I305, mirror It, a powder box l4, rouge box l5, lipstick l6 and comb H, with or without additional cosmetic preparations or articles as desired.
A pair of slidable supports 18 which will be described further hereinafter are adapted to support the mirror at a convenient angle. a
A base or body H of the combination article I0 is optionally divided into compartments by means of an inner wall I9. One of these compartments is designed to contain comb H or a similar relatively long article. In the other compartment there are mounted a powder box l4, rouge box I5, lipstick I6 either in a fixed position or alternatively by means of elastic members 20 or the like whereby the articles may be removed or replaced at will. The comb I! is positioned in compartment 2| which is shallower than compartment 2|- in which the other articles are positioned. This compartment 2| has a floor 22 which is raised above the bottom of base II to provide a space or chamber 23 (see Fig. 6) therebelow. In-this space or chamber there may be placed coins or the like as will be hereinafter described. In at least one position on floor 22, there is a small opening or hole 24 through which the inside of'space 23 may be viewed, whereby it is readily determinable whether the space is empty and optionally through which the contents of the space may be counted and identified.
The cover l2 of the combination article I ll is constructed and adapted to contain articles of convenience such as 'keys, money, papers or the like. As shown in Fig. 3, the cover I2 is divided into an open compartment 25 having a hook 25 or the like for receiving a key ring or other similar object of similar nature. The cover l2 likewise has at least one closed compartment 21 adapted to receive paper money or papers of importance and optionally a second closed compartment 28 adapted to receive other articles such as, coins in addition to those in chamber 23, a handkerchief, pictures, address book and the like. The closed compartments have covers hingeably mounted thereby, for example by means of hinges 29 whereby they may be opened when desired. A
It is readily apparent that when the combination article is opened as shown in Fig. 2, there is provided a convenient cosmetic compact. On the other hand, when the article is opened to the position shown in Fig. 3 there is provided a con venient small size purse having numerous compartments and devices adapted to receive a large number of articles conventionally carried in a handbag, wallet or the like; It is contemplated according to this invention that this combination article will substantially replace the use of a large handbag on occasions when compactness of size and lightness of weight are at a premium. For example, the combination article shown herein is an ideal evening bag, or alternatively is satisfactorily adapted to be used by women while traveling, engaged in outdoor sports, and on various formal occasions. Other uses will be obvious.
In Figs. 4 to '7 there are shown further details in connection with a coin carrying compartment in the combination article according to one form of the invention. As shown in these figures, chamber 23 is located beneath the floor 22 of compartment 21 and is adapted to receive in side-by-side position, a plurality of coins 32.
Toward one end of chamber 23 is an opening 33 to the outside of the article ill whereby coins 32 may be removed from the article without opening cover l2. In this way small change such as carfare is readily obtainable without opening the entire article, whereby change may be obtained without danger of losing the contents of the entire article. It will be obvious of course that this is a great advantage to a woman who is on a shopping trip and cannot conveniently open her purse because of the numerous other articles she is carrying.
At each end of chamber 23 there isslidably mounted a support member I8. The support l8 comprises a rod like member having a substantially right angle bent therein and adapted to slide in a hole or slot 34 positioned adjacent the end of chamber 23. The support i8 is so mounted in slot 3 5 that it may be inserted into' the slot with the right angle portion of the support it resting and being recessed in a recess 33 in the back of the base II. This support i8 is then adapted to be partially withdrawn from slot 34, rotated upwards so that the support 18 supports the cover 2 at substantially a 45 angle or other convenient angle with respect to the base i I. A suitable stop (see Fig. '7) is provided to prevent complete removal of support l8.
At the other end of chamber 23 there is a second sup-port member it of similar shape and construction similarly mounted in a hole or slot 35. This second support member 18 is adapted to be inserted fully within the slot 3 3 in such a position that it rests within and closes on" opening 33 through which coins 32 may be removed from chamber 23. Thus when this support [8 is fully inserted, the coin carrying chamber 23 is closed against accidental loss of the contents,
and when support I8 is withdrawn the coins 32 may readily be removed from chamber 23.
In Fig. 7 there is shown a method of controlling the position and angle of support IS in hole 34. According to this method there is a small pin or plug 35 on the end of support l8 positioned within hole 34 and adapted to slide in a keyed slot 37. This slot 31 is cut into the side wall of hole it running substantially parallel with the center line of the hole and having a key or a keyed portion 38 at the inner end whereby the support may be locked into the closed position having a plurality of keyed portions 39 at the other or outer end of slot 3? whereby the support 18 may be locked in a plurality of angular positions. For example, in the closed position the support l8 will be locked in a horizontal position whereas in the open position the support I8 may in turn be locked in a horizontal position, a vertical position or intermediate positions.
It will be obvious, of course, that the resting angle of the cover 12 with respect to the base II will be adjusted by means of the angular position of support I8. In Fig. 8 there is shown a somewhat different form of the invention comprising a combination article of jewelry and container Et The internal structure of this article is substantially similar to the internal structure described in connection with the previous figures whereby the article is adapted for use as a combination purse or the like. However, this form of the invention has an externally designed case which is adapted to function as a piece of jewelry or the like to be secured to the wearers clothing. A pin 48 is adapted to operate with catch ll and is mounted on a hinge 32 or the like whereby the combination article W may be pinned to a dress, coat or the like.
In this modified form of the invention the owners hands are completely free from the necessity of carrying the article and in addition, the article is part of the jewelry worn by the owner, It is apparent that the article according to this form is ideally adapted for the use of an evening bag or the like.
It will be understood that the internal arrangement and construction of the article described herein may be altered or modified without departing from the scope of this invention. For example, there may be provided compartments or cases for additional articles, or alternatively the iocation or the design of various articles may be changed. Numerous variations will be obvious to those skilled in the While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. V
