Description
March 2, 1948. B. WITH NONSKID DEVICE FOR SHOES Filed April 5, 1946 Bror ZLTJJZQ Patented Mar. 2, I948 N ED, STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 2,437,143 NONSKID DEVICE FOR SHOES Bror With, Skoycn, near Oslo, Norway Application April 5, 1946, Serial No. 659,903 2 Claims. (01. 3662) The present invention relates to improvement in nonskid device for shoes.
More particularly the invention relates to that particular kind of nonskid device which comprises a number of metal members provided with prongs and being shaped as slides, adapted to be entered on a strap and to be held in position under the sole of the shoe by means of gripping jaws which are adjustably fixed to the said strap and as wedging arms may be pressed against the upper edge of the sole of the shoe and to be tightened by means of the said strap, and where the said wedging arm-s also preferably are formed as slides which may slide on the said strap for the purpose of adjustment of the same in relation to the dimension and thickness of the sole of the shoe.
The object of this invention is to provide a new design for the said wedging members for the purpose of easy and accurate adjustment of the same on the strap of the device.
In this type of devices it has previously been the practice to use a strap provided with holes at a suitable distance apart, and to provide the wedging slides with a tongue adapted to enter the said holes to fix the wedging slide non-slidably to the strap.
But this method has the drawback that the adjustment can only be done in steps equal to the distance between two holes which in many cases has proved to be unsatisfactory.
According to this invention this drawback is eliminated by providing on the wedging slide a self-locking pressing member, adapted to engage the strap at any point and to lock the wedging slide to the strap in a simple manner.
The invention thus consists in a nonskid device for shoes, comprising a strap adapted to be tightened around a shoe, sliding nonskid members on thesaid strap and provided with prongs, adapted to engage the underside of the sole of the shoe, and other prongs adapted to act against the ground, a pair of slides on the said strap being formed as gripping jaws and adapted to engage with the upper edge of the sole of theshoe and to act as lever arms for tightening the said strap, and means for adjustably locking the lastmentioned gripping jaw slides to the said strap, said means consisting in a pressing member, adapted to engage the said strap at any point desired and being formed as an angularly shaped member pivoted in the said slide with a short arm, inside of the said slide and a longer arm extending out of the said slide through a transverse slot in the same, said slide opposite to said slot being pro- 2 vided with an aperture, adapted to allow the said strap to bulge out when the said pressing member is operated.
In order that this invention shall be readily understood, it will in the following be described with reference to the drawing, illustrating an embodiment of the same.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 illustrates in perspective view the complete device according to this invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates in longitudinal cross section the strap with the gripping jaw slide in unlocked position.
Fig. 3 illustrates the same as Fig. 2 with the gripping jaw slide in locked position, and
Fig. 4 illustrates the gripping jaw slide from the back side.
In the drawing, l is the strap with tightening means 2 of conventional construction. On the strap l gripping members 3 and 4 with prongs 6 adapted to engage th ground, are arranged as slides adapted to be positioned according to desire.
0n the strap I there are further arranged slides 1 and 8; these slides are adapted to engage the upper edge of the sole of the shoe with the outn bent notched lower edge 9, and to be tightened together by means of the strap I.
In the back side of the slides I and 8 there is arranged an aperture II), adapted to receive an outbent portion II of the strap I. On the front side of the slide there is arranged a slot I2 adapted to receive an angularly shaped member I3, I I, the short arm I4 of which is arranged within the slides I and 8 and the longer arm I3 of which forms an actuating arm on the outside of the slide.
By means of abutments l5, I6 on the sides of the arm I4 the lever is fulcrumed on both sides of the slot I2.
By means of this just described locking mechanism, slides 1 and 8 may be lockedto thelstrap I at any desired position by swinging the arm l3 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3, which will be readily understood by any one.
When the device is to be used, the strap I is opened at 2 and the shoe is placed against the prongs 5 and the slides 3 and 4. The lower edges 9 on the slides land 8 are adjusted against the upper edge of the sole and the arms I3 are locked. The strap I is then tightened by the mean 2, whereby the bending action on the slides I and 8 will force the edges 9 against the sole and fix the device to the shoe in a suitable manner.
I claim:
1. An improved nonskid device for shoes, comprising a strap adapted to be tightened around a shoe, sliding nonskid members on the said strap and provided with prongs, adapted to engage the underside of the sole of the shoe, and other prongs adapted to act against the ground, a pair of slides on the said strap being formed as gripping jaws and adapted to engage with the upper edge of the sole of the shoe and to act as lever arms for tightening the said strap, and means for adjustably locking the last mentioned gripping J'aw slides to the said strap, said means consisting in a pressing member, adapted to engage the said strap at any point desired and being formed as an singularly shaped member pivoted in the said slide with a short arm on the inside of the said slide and a longer arm extending out of the said slide through a transverse slot in the same, said 4 slide opposite to said slot being provided with an aperture, adapted to allow the said strap to bulge out when the said pressing member is operated.
2. An improved nonskid device for shoes, comprising a strap adapted to be tightened around a shoe, sliding nonskid members on the said strap provided with prongs adapted to engage the underside of the sole of the shoe and other prongs adapted to act against the ground, a pair of slides on the said strap being formed as gripping jaws and adapted to engage with the upper edge of the sole of the shoe and to act as lever arms for tightening the said strap, and means for adjustably locking the last mentioned gripping jaw slides to the said strap, said means consisting in a pressing member, adapted to engage the said strap at any. point desired and to lock the said gripping jaw slide to the said strap.
