This invention relates to a hospital bed construction, the primary object of the invention being to provide a hospital bed which is equipped with a toilet, connected with the hospital sewerage system, thereby eliminating the necessity of patients using the usual inconvenient bedpan.

An important object of the invention is to provide a hospital bed equipped with a toilet, the toilet being arranged so that it is concealed under the bed at all times, but may be readily and easily brought into use, resulting in the saving of time, which is an important factor during nursing.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will not in any way operate to the discomfort of the occupant of the bed, when the toilet is not in use.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawing:

Figure 1 is a plan view of a hospital bed constructed in accordance with the invention.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the frame of the bed includes side rails 5 to which the slats 8 are connected in the usual way.

The slats 6 arranged at a point substantially central of the bed, provide a support for the closet bowl I, which is formed with a flange 8 at its open end, which flange rests directly on the slats E, the bowl being held in position by means of the bolts 9.

The reference character It designates a supporting band which is formed with a curved lower flange H adapted to fit over the upper open end of the bowl I, as clearly shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing. The band In slopes inwardly, and the upper end thereof is flared outwardly as at I2, so that the seat I 3 will fit thereover. As shown, the seat I 3 rests directly on the mattress M, which forms a part of th bed, the mattress being provided with an opening to accommodate the band It and seat l3. When not in use as a toilet, the band l and seat I3 are removed, and the cover 15 is positioned within the open end of the bowl I, and the removable circular mattress section 16 is placed directly on the cover 15 providing a complete mattress.

When the toilet is to be used, the mattress section l6 and cover l are of course removed, and the band It and seat section [3 positioned as shown by Fig. 2.

2 The reference character I! designates the outlet pipe of the toilet, and connects with the bowl 1 at the base thereof, the outlet pipe ll being connected with the usual sewerage system of the building.

The inlet or flush pipe of the toilet is indicated by the reference character l8, and connects with the water supply system of the building, the discharge end of the pipe l8 being extended into the bowl I at the upper end thereof, to flush material from the bowl. 7

The usual flush valve I9 is provided for controlling the passage of flushing water to the bowl l, the valve being controlled by means of the hand lever 28, which extends to a point beyond the side of the bed, so that it may be conveniently operated by the person using the toilet.

From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided an invalids bed which is equipped with a flushing toilet for the convenience of the invalid or person occupying the bed.

What is claimed is:

In an invalids bed, a mattress having a central removable section providing an opening, slats arranged adjacent to the opening at the base there of, a closet bowl having a, flange adapted to rest on the slats, supported within the opening, an upwardly tapered supporting band adapted to rest on the mouth of the bowl, a curved flange formed at the lower end of the band conforming to the curvature of the mouth of the bowl, said curved flange being disposed Within the opening of the mattress, a seat section adapted to rest on the mattress at the opening, said seat section having a curved inner end adapted to fit over the upper edge of the band, a waste pipe connected with the bowl, and a pipe connected with the bowl for directing flushing water to the bowl, whereby material is flushed from the bowl through the waste pipe.
