My invention relates to combined pocket protectors and pen and pencil holders, the primary object in View being to provide a practical, efficient device for insertion in a shirt pocket particularly, in which a fountain pen or a pencil is carried, to protect the pocket against wear and becoming torn or soiled, and to hold the pen, or a pencil, fast through the usual clip against falling out of the pocket or being surreptitiously removed therefrom.

Another object is to provide a device of the character and for the purposes above set forth which is simple in construction, light in weight, yet strong and durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and replace.

To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set forth in detail in the succeeding description, and defined in the claim appended hereto.

Referring to the drawing by numerals, as shown therein, my invention comprises, as the primary element thereof, a cardboard, or pressed fiberboard, protector panel I of the approximate size of the usual shirt pocket and the same shape, being substantially of rectangular form with a rounded bottom edge 2. It will be understood, of course, that panels I will be provided in different sizes to fit pockets of different sizes. The upper portion of the panel I is folded over for wardly of what constitutes the front side of said panel to provide a flap 3 whereby the top edge of the panel I is provided with a trough or channel 3. Extending downwardly out of the trough or channel 3' over the front side of the panel I, part way, is a guard-forming sheet 4 of Celluloid, or the like, of the same width as the panel I and which has its upper edge opposed flat to the rear side of the flap 3, The sheet 4 has the upper edge 5 thereof secured to said flap 3 by an adhesive tape 6 interposed in the trough, or channel '3 to extend longitudinally along the same and for a short distance below the flap 3, said tape 6 forming a liner in the trough, or channel '3' adapted to straddle the upper edge of the pocket. A binder tape 1, of Celluloid, is folded over the top of the trough, or channel 3 and down against the'front of the flap 4 to form with the lower edge of the flap 3 an upper bead 8 extending across the panel I. The tapes 6 and I may be formedof Celluloid or the like, or any other suitable material.

In using the described invention, the panel I is inserted in a pocket 9 of the shirt with the trough, or channel 3' and the liner forming tape 6 straddling the upper edge of the pocket and functioning as a clip to frictionally retain the protector in place. As thus applied, the bead 8 is disposed outside the pocket I along the upper edge of the front of the pocket. The bead 8 forms an anchor for the usual clip of a fountain pen, or the like, not shown, to snap under when the pen, or the like, is inserted in the pocket 9. As will be seen, the panel I is supported by the bottom of the pocket 9 and the sheet 4 functions as a protector for the front of the pocket while the panel I functions in a similar manner inside said pocket and the trough 3 and tape 6 protect the top edge of said pocket. Thus, the pen, or pencil, is held firmly in the pocket 9 so that the same will not fall out of the pocket H or be removed from the pocket without the knowledge of the owner, and the pocket 9 is adequately protected against being torn, soiled or worn.

The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.

Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept,.and right is'herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim. 7

What I claim is:

A combination pocket protector and holder for a fountain pen comprising a panel of substantially rigid material and of the same size and shape as said pocket adapted to .be inserted in the pocket and to fit in the same and having a forwardly folded upper edge forming a trough adapted to straddle the upper edge of the pocket and providing a front upper edge flap on said panel, a guard forming sheet of Celluloid having an upper edge fixed on said upper flap against the rear side of said flap and adapted to depend from said flap over the front of the pocket, said flap having a bead forming edge extending along the inside the same and adhesively attached to opposite sides of said trough and sheet.
