Preferably the amount of adhesive substance discharged from the trough is determined in accordance with the rate of advance of the carpet material and the thickness of the adhesive layer desired thereon.
Another object is to provide an adhesive ap-- plying mechanism having adjustable means for determining the width to which the adhesive substance may be applied to the carpet material.
Another object'is to provide an adhesive applying mechanism which is capable of being adjusted along the path of the carpet material to position the doctor blade of such mechanism at the point where the advancing carpet material has little or no vibration, so that the doctor blade will produce a substantially uniform and even layer of adhesive substance on the carpet material.
Another object is to provide an adhesive applying mechanism wherein the doctor blade is adjustable vertically relative to the advancing carpet material so as to vary the thickness of the layer of adhesive produced thereby.
Another object is to provide an adhesive applying mechanism that is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, easy to install and efiicient in operation.
Other objects, advantages and novel details of construction of this invention will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring now to the drawings, A is an adhesive applying mechanism embodying our invention and constituting a part of a machine illustrated of the cemented pile type.
As shown in Figure 1 the carpet material "I, such as burlap covered rubber, is advanced through the machine with the burlap side theretary beaters 15 which vibrate the carpet material after the adhesive substance is applied to the upper surface thereof. Cut fibers such as cut hair or the like are distributed from suitable means (not shown) onto the adhesive coating as the carpet material is vibrated by the beaters so that such fibers will be imbedded in the adhesive coating to form the cemented pile carpet.

For adjusting the'closure element 29 we have provided an adjusting screw 3| threadedly engaging a bracket 32 on the outer side of the trough 20 and having at its outer end a knurled head 33 by which it may be manipulated, a sleeve 34 threadedly engaging the screw 3|, a rod 35 mounted to turn in brackets 35 on the trough, a lever 31 fixed to the rod 35, a link 38 terminally connected to the lever 31 and sleeve levers 39 fixed to the rod 35. bifurcated levers 4| and 42 respectively pivotally connected to the bifurcated levers 39 and 40, threaded rods 43 extends 34, bifurcated ing loosely through brackets 44 on the trough and terminally connected to the links 4| and 42, and coilsprings 45 on the rods 43 between the links 42 and "brackets 44. Thus, rotation of theadju'sting screw 3| will cause the sleeve 34 to beadjusted lengthwise of said screw 3| and thereby cause the rod to be turned by the intermediate-link 38 and lever 31. 'Such turning movement of the rod 35 will cause the bifurcatedlevers 39 to move the links, rods 43, links 42 and levers to thereby swing the closure element 29 about its pivot 30 relative to the discharge opening 22 'of the trough for regulating the amount of adhesive substance to be discharged from said opening 22 onto the carpet material '45 tend to move the links it. However, by suitably adjusting the screw 3| the closure element 29 may be moved to any suitable position relative to the discharge opening 22 in the trough to regulate the amount of adhesive substance discharged therefrom.
In Figures 7 and 9 respectively we have indicated by dotted lines one open position of the closure element 23, however such closure element may be adjusted to various "other positions, as desired. Thus, with this construction it is possible to provide for a flow of adhesive substance from the trough 20 onto the carpet material III which may be continued without operator manip-' ulation for an extended period.
In the present instance the roll 25, doctor blade 24, trough 20 and associated parts are mounted upon a carriage that is adjustable along the path of the carpet material l0 so that the doctor blade 24 and roll 25 may be positioned at a point where the advancing carpet material It has little or no vibrationto produce a substantially uniside thereof uppermost advances over the plate '3 adapted to tension in and stance to be spread unevenly. To accomplishthis the carriage 50 is adjustable along a frame member 5| of the machine and has journaled thereon a shaft '52. carrying pinions 53 meshing with racks 54 fixed to the frame of the machine. Any suitable means such as a crank 55 may be employed at one endofthe shaft 52 to rotate the pinions 53 relative to the racks 54 to cause the carriage 50 to move back and forth as aforesaid.

, What we claim as our invention is:
l. Mechanism for applying an adhesive substance to the upper surface of advancing sheet material, comprising a roll for supporting the ,advancing' material, means for I dischargine adtension the. 3.Mechanism for applying an adhesive substance to the upper'surface of advancing sheet material, comprisin adoctor blade engageable with adhesive substance on said material to determine the spread thereof, means for discharging adhesive substance onto said material before it reaches the doctor blade, said means including a trough supported a sufiicient distance above the sheet to discharge the adhesive substance in unrestricted flow through the atmosphere to the sheet material, means for wiping the material before the adhesive substance is deposited thereon, and side plates carried by the wiping means below the discharging means for determining the width to which the discharged adhesive substance may be applied to said material.

5. Mechanism for applying an adhesive substance to the upper surface of advancing sheet material, comprising means for discharging an adhesive substance onto said material, a wiper blade engageable with said material before the adhesive substance is discharged onto the same,

Mechanism for applying an adhesive substance to the upper surface of advancing sheet material, comprising a trough above said. material and having a discharge opening at the bottom thereof through which an adhesive substance may be discharged downwardly onto said surface, a doctor blade above said material and engageable with the discharged adhesive substance to determine the spread thereof upon said surface, a roll of true cylindrical form beneath said. material and cooperating with said doctor blade to govern the thickness of the adhesive substance spread on said surface, a carriage carrying the doctor blade and roll and adjustable back and forth along the path of said advancing material whereby said doctor blade and roll may be positioned at a point where the advancing material has little or no vibration so that the doctor blade will produce a substantially uniform layer of adhesive substance on said material as it passes over said roll, a wiper blade mounted on said carriage and engageable with said surface in ad- 'vance of said doctor blade, and a supporting plate for said advancing material located beneath said material and adjustably connected to said carriage so as to be adjustable relative to said wiper blade.

Mechanism for applying an adhesive substance to the uppersurface of advancing sheet material, comprising means for discharging an adhesive substance onto said material, said means including a trough above said material and having a discharge opening at the bottom thereof through which an adhesive substance may be discharged downwardly onto said surface, a docing of true cylindrical form to cooperate with the doctor blade to govern the thickness of the adhesive substance spread on said material. and
a common carrier for said roll and doctor blade supported for movement back and forth along the path of the advancing material to position said roll and'blade at a point where the advancing material has little or no vibration,'so that the doctor blade will produce a substantially uniform layer of adhesive substance on said material.
