Description

NOV. 19, 1946. R DUARTE 2,411,319
SAFETY TONGS Filed Sept. '7, 1945 Inventor Af, Wye/wey Patented Nov. 19, 1946 UNITED lSTATES PATENT OFFICE SAFETY TONGS Joseph Rudolph Duarte, Honolulu, Territory ofl Hawaii Application September 7, 1945, Serial No. .614,894
1 Claim. l
My invention relates to mechanics tools and has for an object to provide a pair of tongs for handling electried or hot elements with safety.
Another object of this invention is to provide automatically actuated tongs.
A further'object of the invention is to provide a pair of tongs having an adjustable or removable jaw member.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a pair of tongs the handle of which is of insulation material.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pair of tongs the jaws of which are provided with an insulation coat.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of my tongs,
Figure 2 is a detail view of an insulator handle,
Figure 3 is an end View of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a section on line 4--4 of Figure 1.
v In the accompanying drawing as above enumerated and in the following specification, like characters of reference indicate like parts .throughout and in which Ill, indicates my invention, which comprises an insulated handle I I, having bores I2 and I3, extending longitudinally there-through with a terminal enlarged recess Ill, pivoted Within which recess is a trigger extension I5, of a jaw I6, pressing against the wall I'I, of the trigger is a cap I3, actuated by a spring I9, held in bore I3, by means of an insulator cap 29. The action of the spring upon the trigger is to hold the jaw I6, into engagement with a jaw 2|, the shank 2,2, of Which is held in the bore 62, by means of a set 4screw 23. The shank 22, may be adjusted vto extend the jaw 2|, if necessary. The jaws I@ and 2l, as illustrated are provided with respective teeth 2li and 2'5, which teeth may be of any desired formation. The jaws lli and 2 l, as well as the trigger IIS, may if so desired be provided with an insulating coating on the surfaces 26 and 2l.
From the foregoing description it will be obvious that my safety tongs may be used either for electrical or heated work from which elements the operator or user of the tool will be protected from either shock or heat as the case may be.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawing. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described my invention that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
A pair of tongs comprising a slidable jaw, a pivoted jaw. an insulator handle for the jaws, said handle having a bore through which the rst jaw operates, said pivoted jaw being spring actuated andmanually controlled, said pivoted jaw having a trigger depending from the handle for said manual control, and a longitudinal here in the handle in which the spring is seated.
JOSEPH RUDOLPH DUARTE.
