SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,297, dated March 1, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I,WILLIAM E. LAWRENCE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefulIm provements in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is a handle es pecially applicable to curry-combs and horsebrushes, the object being to provide such a handle as can be securely held without unduly restraining and fatiguing the user.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective View, showing myimproved handle; and Fig. 2 a side view, showing the same applied to a currycomb.

Ordinary handles, consisting of metal or wooden bars, are fatiguing to the user, and are apt to blister the hand. This results even when the thumb is placed against the end of the handle for a bearing, from the fact that the handle can only be grasped one way-that is, with the fingers folded directly around it. These objections I overcome by constructing the handle so that a secure hold may be obtained with the fingers in different positions, and without necessarily folding them around and griping the handle, as heretofore. For

this purpose I provide the handle A, between the outer end and the ferrule or point where the tang enters or is united to the same, with a bearin g, E,whieh affords a rest for the thumb at the inner side of .the latter, while the side of the thumb has an easy rest against the side dle, and therefore Without the necessity of 40 rigidly griping the latter, as heretofore, yet at the same time such a natural and easy 'grasp is secured that the tool may be used for a long time with but little fatigue.

Any suitable construction may be employed to secure the desired bearing, which may be connected adj ustabl y to or formed in one piece with the handle.

Without, therefore, limiting myself to any special construction or arrangement,

I claim- 1. A handle adapted for application to a curry-comb, provided with a lateral thumbbearing arranged about midway'between the ends, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the handle of a curry-comb, of a projecting bearing extending from the handle, between the ends, and at the same side thereof as the comb-teeth, substantially as set fort-h.
