Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE W. SMITH, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
COCK FOR WATER-BASINS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,198, dated March 8, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE W. SMITH, of the city of Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement. in the Mode of Constructing Basin-Cocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a correct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing` and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the application of an intermediate spindle with a right and left screw.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The drawing, Figure l represents a view of the cock, Fig. 2 a vertical part section, Fig. 3 the intermediate right and left screw spindle.
The nozzle A is attached to the spindle B, which passes down through the spindle guide C through the stuffing box D, and is connected with the intermediate spindle E by means of the male and female, left hand screw F, F, and then the intermediate spindle E connects with the vertical valve H by means of the right hand male and female screw G, G, thus forming a compound and combined connection, whereby the action of turning the nozzle A right or left the supply of water can be let on, and stopped olf or regulated.
To operate this cock, the nozzle is turned to the center, which opens the valve H to cause ay full supply of water and turning the same either way it closes the valve to stop the How. For instance, when the nozzle is turned to the center the action of one or the other of the screws on the intermediate spindle lifts up the valve from its seat and by turning the nozzle back to its proper position again, either right or left, the valve is closed by the same action. This double method produces a double acting screw compression cock, being an entire new application.
The utility of this improvement is in the economy of construction the simplicity of operation, and durability-of action, with the advantage of heilig always sure in the positive tightness of closing.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The intermediate spindle E in combination with the vertical valve H, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
HORACE W. SMITH. Witnesses:
WM. VINE, CHARLES E. BULKELEY.
