Description

Patented Dec. 29, 1942 CHAIR Morris Greitzer, Los ngeles, Calif., assigner .to f Meyer Greitzer, Los Angeles, Calif.
AppiicationMay 19, 1941, Serial No. 394,074
. 3 Claims. ,(Cl. 155-178) my invention are, to generally improve upon and 1,.
simplify the construction of chairs of the particular type to which my invention relates, further, to provide a chair that may ber readily assembled and taken apart, thereby enablinga number of chairs disassembled or in knockdowni condition to be packed in nested arrangement for storage and transportation, thereby enabling a chair manufacturer to obtain advantage of minimum transportation charges, and further, to
provide a chair of the character referred to which' when properly assembled is very strong, rigid and substantial.
A further object of my invention is, to provide a chair wherein the chair back is firmly secured to the frame by means of a small number ofscrews or like fastening devices andgthe latter being located on the chair and particularly the back thereof so that, the heads of said screws or like fastening devices can not contact with and consequently scratch or mar the surfacesi of walls, woodwork, and adjacent articles of furniture.
A further object of my invention is, to provide a chair and particularly the lback thereof that combines in its construction, strength and rigidity, with minimum weight, and at the same time the chair back presenting a neat, iinished and pleasing appearance.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts that will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a chair constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line Ii-Ll of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section similar to Fig. 4 and showing a modified form of connection between the upright members of the chair frame and the back.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a vertical section taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 8 is a horizontal section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
Fig. 9 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 8 and showing a modiiied form of the fastening between the lower edge of the chair back and the upright members of the chair frame.
Fig. 10 is a vertical section taken on fthe line I-I of Fig. 9.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention, the frame of the chair is preferably formed from a single piece of metal tubing, the intermediate portion of which .is bent to form a horizontally disposed U-shaped member I0 that forms the base of the chair, and projecting upwardly from the front ends of the side members of said base are upright parallel legs Il.
From the upper ends of the legsy Il portions of the metal tube are extended horizontally rearward above and parallel with the side. members of the base IEB to provide a support for the chair seat I2, which latter is vpreferably padded and covered with suitable, flexible material, for instance, leather, leather simulating composition, or fabric.
From the rear ends of the horizontally-disposed seat supporting members of the frame, the terminal portions of the metal tubingextend vertically upward in parallel relation as designated by I3 to form supports for the chairback.
In accordance with my invention, the :chair `.back comprises a frame, preferably composed of wood, and which includes spaced parallel top and bottom rails Iii that are curved lengthwise so as to produce in the finished back a horizontally disposed concave front surface and a horizontally disposed convex rear surface.
Arranged vertically between the ends of the rails I4 are blocks I5 and a central block I6 is arranged between the central portions of said rails. These blocks are secured to the rails in any suitable manner, preferably by means of nails I'I. Secured to andcovering the rear faces of the blocks I5 and Iii and likewise the rear faces of the rails Iii is a panel i8 of thin material, for instance, chip board, and a corresponding panel I9 of similar material overlies and is secured to the front faces of the back frame comprising the rails I4 and blocks I5 and I6.
The seat back frame thus constructed is covered with leather, composition, or fabric, as designated by the numeral 20, and in order to render the back comfortable to the occupants of the chair a cushioning pad 2l of cotton or analogous fibrous material may be formed between the front panel I9 and the overlying covering member 20. To secure the edges of the covering 20 on the chair back and at the same time produce a finished appearance, a binding strip 22 is secured on the top of the chair back and on the outer surfaces of the ends thereof.
Formed through the end portions of the lower one of the rails I4 and extending upwardly into the blocks I are bores 23 which receive the upper portions of the upright members of the chair frame, and to secure the chair back to the upright members I3, narrow plates 24 of metal extend through diametrically opposite slots 25 that are formed through the walls of the tubular members I3 just below the under face of the chair back and the ends of these plates 24 are iirmly secured to the lower one of the rails I4 of the seat back frame by screws 26 or like fastening devices. The position of the securing plates 24 and screws 26 prevents the same from making contact with and scratching or marring adjacent pieces of furniture, walls, woodwork, and the like.
In Figs. 9 and l0 I have illustrated a modified form of the attaching means just described and in such modified construction, a plate 21 somewhat shorter than the plate 24 projects through a single slot 28 formed in the portion I3 of the tubular frame, and the outer end of said plate is secured to the under side of the lower one of the rails I4 by a screw or like fastening device 29.
In the modied construction illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, an elongated plug 3S of wood or metal is inserted in a bore 3i similar to bore 23. The lower portion of this plug projects a substantial distance below the lower one of the rails I4 and is positioned within the upper portion of the tubular member I3 of the chair frame. To secure the plug in the member I3, a pin 32' or like fastening device is driven through an aperture that is formed in member I3 and into the plug space when packed for storage and transportation.
When the back is properly applied to the Lipright members I3 of the tubular frame, the few screws that are utilized in securing the back to the frame parts I3 are located so that it is impossible for them to contact with walls, adjacent pieces of furniture, and the like.
It will be understood .that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved chair, may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a chair, a frame including a pair of upright back supporting members, a chair back provided in its end portions with vertically disposed openings for the reception of the upper portions of said upright back supporting members, plates projecting through said upright back supporting members and fastening devices passing through the ends of said plates and seated in the lower portion of the seat back that is supported by said upright members.
2. In a chair the combination with, a chair frame including a pair of upright back supporting members, a chair back frame comprising a pair of spaced parallel rails, end blocks and a center block arranged between and secured to said rails, the end blocks being provided in their lower portions with vertically disposed bores for the reception of the upper portions of the upright back supporting members of said chair frame, fastening means secured to the under side of the back frame and projectingY into the upright members of the chair frame, panels on the front and rear of said chair back frame, a cushion overlying the front one of said panels and a cover enclosing said frame and said cushion.
3. In a chair, the combination with a chair frame including a pair of upright chair back supporting members, of a chair back frame including a pair of spaced parallel rails and blocks arranged between and secured to the ends of said rails, the lower portions of said blocks being provided With bores for the reception of the upper end portions of the upright back supporting members of the frame and fastening devices secured to the under side of said chair back frame and passing through the upright members of the chair frame for securing said chair back frame to said upright supporting members.
