GUARD FOR SLEEPING-CAR BERTHS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letterslatent No. 229,834., dated July 13, 1880.

To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, ELEANOR A. MCMANN, of Cleveland, in the county 'of (luyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Safeguard for Railway-Oar or Steamboat Sleeping-Berths, of which the following is a specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of sleeping-berth with my safeguard attached. Fig. 2 is a transverse section. Fig.3 is a section and detached view of the posts and plate, showing the-slots in each.

The object of my invention is to provide a safeguard against the liability of persons being thrown or rolling out of the upper berth of cars or steamboats, and to pretent carberths from closing up and shutting the occupant in in case of accident.

The nature of the invention will fully appear from the subjoinedtdescription, when considered with reference to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

A. is the front board orrail of a berth. B B are two posts attached to the said front A 1 on the insideand at the corners of the berth.

They are made to be turned down inside the frame-workof the berth when not required for use, being attached-by a plate, a, secured on the inside of the front A by means of a slot, 11, made in the lower part of the post, in such amanuer that said posts may be raised up the length of the slot and then be turned down, as represented in' Fig. 2. When they stand upright they are firm and rigid, and are intended to support the guard.

The guard 0 consists of a suitable railing made of metal tubing, so that it may be light,

and is hinged to the top edge of the front A with a double hinge, D, whereby it may be turned down inside the berth when not in use and the berth is closed up, and also be turned down outward and hang down in front, to enable the occupant to either get in or out. To retain the said guard in the upright position there is provided a. latching device, consisting of two long spring-bolts, c 6, playing inside of the top tube of the guard-frame, which has at the central part an opening or slot for knobs f f, which are attached to the inner ends of said bolts, and by which the bolts are operated. This latch device is to be operated by the occupant of the berth.

g is a stop on the posts 13, to prevent the guard passing in beyond them when raised upright to be latched or bolted.

When the sleeping-berth is to be made up for the occupant it is let down in the usual manner. The porter first turns the guard down outside, then raises the posts and fixes them in the upright position, makes up the bed, and then the passenger climbs into the berth, then reaches out and raises the guard to an upright position and latches it. He is then safe from the danger of being thrown out while asleep, and also from the closing of the berth in case of accident, as the guard would strike the top of the car and prevent its closing up and shutting the occupant in.

Having described my invention, I claim- The combination, with a sleeping-berth of railway-cars, of the safeguard O, hinged to the top edge of the front A with a double hinge, D, whereby it may be turned down either way, and provided with the spring-bolts e e, for latching it in the upright position to the posts B B, said posts also being capable of being turned down by having slot b, and connected by plate a to the front A, as shown and described.
