This invention relates to protecting covers or throw cloths for protecting automobile seats, fenders or other parts while mechanics are working on adjacent parts of automobiles or the like.

Heretofore, covers used for this purpose have been reversible, that is, either side could be exposed in use and become soiled, with the result that the soiled surface might subsequently contact the seat or part intended to be protected and thus soil it. The object of this invention is to provide means for identifying the top surface, or surface to be exposed in use, in such manner that the user will not reverse the cover and will keep clean the side which contacts the parts to be protected.

Another object is to provide means for hanging the cover on a hook in such manner that the surface exposed in use will also be exposed when the cover is not in use and is hanging on a hook.

These objects are accomplished by providing a handle on that surface of the cover intended to be the exposed surface, midway between the edges of the cover. By grasping the handle with one hand and the edge with the other, the cover can quickly be placed in any position on the car or part to be protected, or it can be hung on a hook, with that side exposed which it is intended to expose, Without danger of occasional reversal and consequent soiling of the clean side of the cover. The location of the handle, centrally of the cover, permits the cover to be hung on a hook with the clean bottom or inner side concealed and protected.

In that embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing, the protecting cover l0 made of cloth, canvas, flannel, felt, or other flexible and easily deformable fabric, is circular in form, but it may be square or rectangular or any other desired shape. Covers of the character described are used for covering automobile seats, fenders or other parts to protect them while mechanics are working on adjacent parts of the automobile, and the shape of the covers may vary.

A handle I l is stitched to the upper surface of the cover It by stitches l2 centrally of the cover, midway between its edges, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A modified form of handle is shown in Fig. 3, where the cover III has a loop [3 of cord or rope on the upper side, the ends of the rope being knotted at M on the under side of the cover. Another modification is shown in Fig. 5. The handle in this embodiment consists of a rubber washer and stem, the Washer 15 being adjacent the under surface of the cover l0, and the stem being split as indicated at l6 between the washer l5 and upper end l1. The stem is flexible and in order to draw it upwardly through an aperture in the cover ID, the split portion [6 can be pulled into alignment with the part ll. After the stem has been drawn through the cover It, the parts resume the positions shown.

The several forms of handles serve two purposes, namely, to identify the top surface of the cover, that is, the surface to be exposed when the cover is in use, and to hang the cover on a hook, such as the hook 18, when the cover is not in use, Thus one surface is kept clean for contacting the parts to be protected.

Changes may be made in details of construction without departing from the scope of my invention.

I claim:

1. A protecting cover for automobile seats and the like comprising a piece of flexible material and means for identifying the surface to be exposed when the cover is in use and for hanging the cover on a hook when the cover is not in use. said means consisting of a handle on one surface of the cover, approximately midway between the edges of the cover, said handle consisting of an integral washer and stem, the stem being split between the washer and its free end and projecting from the exposed surface of the cover.

2. A protecting cover for automobile seats and the like, comprising a circular sheet of flexible and readily deformable material, a handle on one surface of the sheet adjacent the center thereof for facilitating placement of the cover for use and for suspending same in a symmetrically draped formation from a hook or the like when not in use so as to expose only said one surface at all times, and said handle projecting from the said one surface of the cover to further indicate the exposed surface thereof and to facilitate handling of said cover without exposing the opposed surface thereof, whereby to maintain said opposed surface protected and clean.
