1 Claim. (01.-248-3599 This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in suspending caps for broom handles and the like.

In suspending caps for broom handles and the like of the type disclosed in the prior art and in commercial use, 'there is provided a cap for attachment to the inner end of a broom handle or the like and the suspending link or ring usually carried by the cap has the bearing ends thereof mounted in the side walls of the cap to extend interiorly of said cap and with such a device it has been found that the same cannot be properly placed on the end of a broom handle due to interference of the bearing ends of the suspending link or ring which engage some portion of the broom handle, resulting in a crooked or tilted mounting of the suspending cap on the broom.

It is therefore the primary object of the present invention to provide asuspending cap :fo-r broom handles and the like wherein the cap is rigidly mounted upon the inner end of a broom handle and the bearing ends for the suspending link or ring carried by the cap are positioned outwardly of the inner end of the broom handle and have free bearing movements unhindered by contact with the broom handle.

It is a further object of the invention to p rovide a suspending cap for broom handles and the like of the foregoing character, wherein the cap carrying a pivotally mounted suspending link or ring is provided with means adapted to be moved into engagement With rthe terminal end of the broom handle for` limiting movements of the cap on the handle and operating for spacing the bearing ends of the suspending link or ring from the adjacent end of the broom handle resulting in free and unrestricted pivotal movements of the suspending link or ring and noninterference in the mounting of the cap on a broom handle.

With the above and other objects in View that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts herein more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.

'Ihe suspending cap for broom handles and the like comprises a metallic cap designated in general by the reference character I0 and comprising an annular side wall I I having an inwardly spun lower edge i2 constituting a flange 'for' biting engagement with the inner end H of a broom handle or the like. The upper edge of the annular side wall II of the cap carries a dome-shaped or rounded head I3 and the inner end of the handle H is similarly shaped or rounded as at I3a for intimate contact by a portion of the rounded head I3 of the cap, the terminal inner end of the handle H being flat as shown at I4 in Figure 2.

A pair of diametrically opposite vopenings l5 are formed in the rounded portion I3 of the cap above the inner end I4 of the handle H, these openings being struck in the cap and resulting in the formation of a pair of inwardly directed diametrically opposite lugs I6 respectively at the lower sides of said openings I5, while the material of the rounded head I3 of the cap above said openings is upwardly arched as at I1 to provide pivot bearings for the horizontal bearing ends I8 of a suspending ring or link I9.

An axial opening 20 is formed in the rounded head I3 of the cap for the passage of the cap anchor nail 2| therethrough to enter the inner end of the handle H as shown in Figure 2, the flanged-head 22 of the nail 2l overlying the edges of said opening 2l) to limit inward driving movement of said nail.

From'an inspection of Figure 2, it will be observed that the inwardly directed lugs I1 bordering the lower sides of the opening I5 engage the terminal at end I4 of the handle H for limiting movement oi the cap onto the handle and such engagement of the lugs with the liat end of the handle spaces the bearing ends I8 of the suspending link I9 from the handle resulting in free and unrestricted pivotal movements of the suspending link and assuring non-interference between the bearing ends I8 of the link and the end of the handle H during placement of theA suspending cap on the end of the handle. As the bearing ends I3 Of the .Sllperlding link I9 are spaced from the end I4 of the handle H by the lugs I6, liability of the suspending link becoming disengaged from the cap by contact with the handle during the mounting of the cap on the handle is eliminated.

While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that minor changes may be made in the details of construction, such as will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

It is claimed:

In a suspending cap for broom handles and the like, in combination, a handle having its end portion beveled, a suspending cap mounted on the end of the handle and constructed to engage the beveled end portion and adjacent side portion of the handle, a suspending link pivotally attached to the cap adjacent the outer end thereof outwardly of the beveled portion of the handle and means carried by said cap inwardly of the link pivot adapted to be moved into engagement with the end of the handle at the extremity of the beveled portion and cooperating with the adjacent portion of the cap'for limiting inward movement of the cap on the handle and spacing said link pivot from the handle, said means comprising lugs struck inwardly from opposite sides of the cap providing pivot openings outwardly thereof for the suspending link and the upper Wall of the cap outwardly of said openings and in overlying relation to said lugs being upwardly arched to provide said link pivots above said openings, the lower edge of the cap being spun inwardly for bighting engagement with said handle and an anchor nail extending into the outer end of the cap and engaging in said handle.
