Description

Oct. 28, 1941. P. H. BAILEY 2,260,426
JACKET Filed May 20, 1938 IN VEN TOR.
PcrhinsHBailey Patented Oct. 28, 1941 JACKET Perkins H. Bailey, New York, N. Y., assignor to Talon, Inc., a corporation of Pennsylvania Application May 20, 1938, Serial No. 209,085
1 Claim.
My invention relates to jackets especially intended for ski wear. The object of my invention is to provide an improved jacket of the class described, in which a slide fastener is employed for the front opening and'wherein the slide fastener is completely concealed by a flap which will give a flat neat appearance to the front of the jacket.
Another object is to provide a jacket with a wide flap which when desired, can be fastened down in position to extend across the front opening and conceal the slide fastener, or in another position exposes the slide fastener and gives a different appearance to the jacket.
Still another object is to provide in a garment of this type a large pocket which is easily accessible in either position of the flap and which will retain articles placed therein very securely when the garment is being worn. In the accompanying drawing, I have shown for purposes of illustration, one embodiment which the invention may assume in practice. In this drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the jacket in one wearing position;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the packet in another wearing position.
The general constru ction of the garment is similar to other garments in that it has a right front portion I, a left front portion 4, a collar 5 and sleeves 8. A full length center opening I extends from the neck line to the bottom edge of the garment and is closed by a slide fastener of the separating bottom stop type. A wide flap 9 preferably of the same material as the body of the jacket is attached to one side of the garment preferably the left side close to the opening and is provided with buttonholes l0 near its edge. These buttonholes cooperate with a series of buttons II on the opposite or right side of the jacket and when the flap is attached to the buttons II, as seen in F18. 1, the fastener is completely concealed. At the same time, the garment is rendered substantially windproof so far as the front opening is concerned since this flap extends directly across the opening. An- I other series of buttons If on the same side of the opening to which the flap is secured permits the flap to be buttoned down in the folded back position as shown in Fig. 2, to expose the front opening and thus give a different appearance. Another advantage of this construction is that the fastener may be adjusted in partly open position when the wearer does not need so much protection againstcold or wind. A large pocket i3 is arranged on the side of the jacket carrying the flap and opens through the inside surface of the flap, the opening being preferably closed by a slide fastener I4. With this arrangement articles may be placed in the pocket l3 and held securely therein and at the same time, the pocket is entirely concealed when the jacket is being worn in the position shown in Fig. 1.
The result of this construction is an unusually neat and flat appearance of the front of the jacket. I am aware of the fact that other means have been proposed in an attempt to conceal the slide fastener in a front opening but in general, the old arrangements have visible edges or folds which do not present nearly as good an appearance as the jacket herein disclosed. One or more slide fasteners l5 may be arranged at the sides of the garment near the bottom edge to tighten the jacket around the waist.
While I have shown and described in this application, one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this embodiment is merely for the purposes of illustration and description and that various other forms may be devised within the scope of I my invention as set forth in the appended claim.
What I claim as my invention is:
A jacket having a front opening, a slide fastener for closing the opening, one slide fastener half being attached to one edge of the material adjacent the opening, a relatively wide flap attached to the jacket on the other side of the opening, supplemental means for securing the edge of the flap to the body of the jacket on the opposite side of the opening to conceal the slide fastener, corresponding fastener means for holding the flap in folded back position to the body of the jacket on the same side to which the flap is attached, the slide fastener being exposed in the folded back position of the flap, and a pocket in said jacket provided with an opening on the inner side of said flap, said pocket extending into the body of the jacket beyond the fold line of the flap whereby the pocket is folded over vpon itself and the pocket opening is readily accessible when the flap is folded back upon the body of the jacket on the same side to which the flap is attached.
