Description

May 13, 1941. 'R. P. REINEMER EAR AND BROW MUFF Filed Jan. 17,
ATTORNEYS provements in Patented May 13, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EAR AND BROW MUFF Eric P. Reinemer, Circle, Mont. Application January 17, 1940, Serial No. 314,302 Claims. (01. 2-209) My invention relates to new and useful imear and brow muiis.
An important object of my invention is the provision of a muff assembly that has both ear and brow covers incorporated therewith in a manner to afford the wearer adequate protection for both the ear and forehead portion of the head during severe and inclement weather conditions.
Another object of my inventionis the provision of an ear and brow mufi assembly that is adjustable to fit any size or shape of head and wherein the ear andbrow covers are adjustable relative to the supporting means to permit them to be accurately fitted to the head of the wearer.
Still another object of my invention is the provision of an assembly of the above-mentioned character'wherein the furry outer side of the covers may be applied to the head and wherein means are provided to hold the said covers in appressed intimate contact with the head.
Yet another object of my invention is the provision of a muff assembly that may be folded into a small and compact package when not in use, thus permitting the same to be easily and expeditiously carried in the pocket until needed.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a muff assembly that may be attractively suspended around the neck when not in position over the ears and brow of the wearer.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a mufi assembly that may be readily adapted to display one school color on the brow muif, and the other school color, or colors, on the ear muffs; graduation numerals or monograms may also be attractively displayed with the monogram on the brow muff, and the letters on the ear muffs.
Other objects and advantages of my invention, will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure l is a side elevation of a mufi assembly embodying my invention, and showing the same applied to the head of a person,
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the muil assembly, and showing the covers removed therefrom,
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of one of the covers and supporting means therefor,
Figure 4 is a front elevation of an ear cover. supporting frame and retaining clip,
I of the band. The opposite end and 24 interiorly tion 30 of the body Figure 5 is a transverse sectional View, taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view, taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 4, and
Figure 7 is a transverse sectional View, taken on the line 1-1 of Figure 6.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral l0 designates an adjustable elastic band having the retaining clips ll slidably associated therewith. The cover supporting frames l2 are carried by the clips in a manner to hold the covers 32 in appressed intimate contact with the ears and forehead of the wearer.
A ring I3 is fixedly connected to the end l4 iii of the band passes through the sliding buckle. it, through the elongated slot I! in the hook l8 and with the extremity thereof fixedly secured to the said sliding buckle. The buckle is slidable along the band and, by altering its position thereon, the length of the band may be selectively varied to fit any size or shape of head.
The retaining clips H are provided with a pair of spaced parallel slots l9 and 20 at substantially the middle thereof whichslidably receive the band ill in a manner whereby the main body of the clip will be disposed interiorly-of the band and wherein the portions of the band extending fromthe clip will be disposed in overlapping relation with the portions thereof laterally of the slots to hold the clip in appressed relation with the head. The lateral marginal edges 2| and 22 of the clips are rolled in the direction of the extending portions of the band to define sleeve or barrel portions 23 and 24.
The cover supporting frames l2 made of wire, or the like, are fashionedinto a substantially elliptical shape and have the opposite ends thereof bent inwardly, as at 25 and 26, to define inwardly extending radially disposed terminals 21 and 28 received by the sleeves 23 and 24 of the retaining clips H. The main body 29 of the cover supporting frames is disposed outside the compass of the band and with the terminal ends 21 and 23 disposed within the sleeve portions 23 of the band. With reference be noted that the upper por- 29 curves outwardly of the band and that the lower portion SI of the body curves inwardly in a manner whereby the cover 32 mounted on the supporting frame will be held in appressed intimate relation with the head by reason of the resilient action of the band on to Figure 6, it will the terminal ends 21 and 28 of the supporting frame. The cover members made of rabbits fur, lambs wool, or the like, so that the furry or villous outer side 33 thereof may be applied to the head in a manner to adequately protect the same from severe and inclement weather conditions. The periphery of the cover is provided with a ban dof elastic material 34 to pull or draw the peripheral edge of the cover rearwardly of the supporting frame l2 and to hold the cover against displacement relative to the said frame.
As illustrated in Figure 2 the middle frame I2 is substantially elongated to cover the entire width of the forehead and the cover 32 carried thereby is proportionately elongated to-protect the entire forehead.
It may thus be seen that the elastic'band 1H1 is adjustable as to length to permit the same to be easily and expeditiously accommodated to the head and that, by virtue of the resilient action of the band on the terminal ends 21 and 28 of the cover supporting frames l2, the covers will be held in intimate contact with the ears and forehead of the wearer and that the retaining clips H are slidable on the band to permit the covers to be properly fitted to the head of the wearer.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the'same, and that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from th spirit of my invention, or scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. An ear muff including a cover member; an
elastic band; a clip having the side edges thereof rolled to define sleeve portions and spaced slots intermediate the sleeves to receive the'band; and a frame to support the cover, said frame having ends received by the sleeve portions of the said clip.
2. An ear muff having, in combination, an elastic band; a clip having the lateral edges thereof rolled in the same direction to define sleeve portions and spaced slots intermediate of 32 are preferably having the lateral edges and parallel with the sleeve portions to slidably receive the band; and a substantially hypocycloidal shaped frame supporting the muif and having ends received by the sleeve portions of the said clip.
3. An ear muff having, in combination, a clip thereof rolled to define sleeve portions and spaced vertical slots intermediate the said sleeve portions; an arcuate frame having ends bent inwardly and extending radially relative thereto and received by the sleeve portions of the clip; and an elastic band extending through the slots in the clip, said band being disposed under the frame but over the ends thereof to urge the muff into close intimate contact with the body of the wearer.
4. In an ear muff the combination of a cover; an elastic band; a clip having spaced slots slidably receiving the band, the lateral edges of the clip being rolled in the direction of the band to define sleeve portions; and a wire frame disposed exteriorly of the band and supporting the cover, the ends of the frame being'curved inwardly and received by the sleeve portions of the clip rearwardly of the band.
5. In an ear muff assembly including an elastic" head band, the improvements comprising muffs disposed at spaced intervals along the band, said intervals being unique to position at least one of the mufis in covering relation with the forehead of the wearer and other of the muffs in covering relation with the ears of the wearer, said mufis being held in association with the band by. clips having the lateral edges thereof rolled to define sleeve .portions and being formed with spaced vertical slots intermediate the said sleeve portions,'and an arcuate frame having ends bent inwardly and extending radially relative thereto and received by the sleeve portions of each of the clips, said elastic head band extending through the slots in the clips, passing under the frames but over the, radially disposed ends thereof in a manner to urge the muffs carried by the frames into closeintimate contact with the head of the wearer.
