Description
A. E. SMITH AMPULE OPENER Filed Dec. 4, 1939 INVENTOR. Arhur E .Smifh.
ATTORNEY.
Feb. 25, 1941.
.l-:* i gli Patentecl Feb. 25, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
Ths invention relate to ampule openers. A
The general object of the lnvention :ls to provide a readily portable opener by means of which ampules containing corks, the contents of which are to be discharged into a vehicle in the ampule, may beopened.
A more specific object of the inventiqn is to provide an ampule holder including a. Supporta and a handle portion and having e, piercing member thereon ada.pted tube inserted in an ampule to remove a, closure.
Other objects and the advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following descrlption ta.ken in connectio'n Wth the accompanying drawing,wherein: 1
Fig. 1 ls a slde elevation of the ampule holder embodying the features of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2, Fig. 1, and on an enlarged scale showlng an ampule 20 being inserted;
Fig. 3 is a. view similar to Fig. 2 showing the ampule closure beng ramoved;
Fig. 4 is a.n end view of the opener;
Fig. 5 is an end view of the ampule;
25 Fg. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a modification;
Fig. 7 is a view shoWing the modfied form with the closure removed; 2
Fig. 8 is a. top pla.n view, part1y in section, showing a. further modiflcatlon;
Fig. 9 is a. side elevation, partly in section, showing the further modlflcation with the ampule closure removed; end
Fig. 10 is a. section tal-zen on line III-IO, Fig. 8.
35 Referring to the drawlng by reference characters I have shown my ampule opener which 1s indlcated generally ai; ID as comprlsing a. body portion II and an end member I2. The body portion Il is in the form of a hollow tube I 3 40 which includes opposednotche; Il which form viewing apertures.
As shown the body includes a reduced outer portion I 5 at one end which receives a, flange lli on the end member I2 with the parts held to- 45 gether in any desired manner as by brazing. The end'member is provided with an aperture I! in which a rod I8 is mounted and which preferably has a sharpened point l9 disposed within the body portlon.
50 My opener is adapted for use for opening ampules such as the ampule 20 which has corks 2| therein provided with a. chamber 22 for a drug 23. The inner portion of the chamber 22 is shown as closed by a trap door 24, while the outer 55 x;grtion of the chamber is closed by a. diaphragm In use the opener is slipped over the end of the ampule a.s shown in Fig. 2 and is then pushed along the ampule to the posltion shown in Flg. 3.
69 As this is done the .rod II flrst pierces the dia.-
ber I2' are similar to the body ll'and end member 12 previously described. The 1od l8' which dislodges the oork is, however, placed eccentric to the axis 01 the body II and end member H 10 and is adapted to pierce a diaphragm 3| which forms an enclosure for a, c.vlty 32 in e. cork 83 arranged in a. cylindrical ampu1e 34. A disk 35 made of any suitable inaterlal ls arrangcd in any desired manner to form a. closure for the cavity 32 in the cork.
The ofi'set relation of therod l8' assures that the disk 35 will be tilted when engaged by the rod I8.
The use of the devce disclosed in Figs. 6 ami 7 is similar to that prevlously described.
In Figs. 8, 9 and 10 I show a. modification 01 my invention wherein the ampule opener 40 is made from a flat blank as indicated by dotted. lines 4| in Fig. 8, end includes a body portion 42 and an end member 43 with the end member bent at' righi; angles to the body portlon. A plercing member 44 is punched from the blank thus leaving a slot 45 in the body end end member.
The body portion Is beat to a.n arcuato sha,pe in cross section and may be provlded wlth a surrounding collar Mi which maybe held in place as by brazing.
The use of the devlce described in Figs. 8, 9 and 10 will be obvious from the prevlous descriptlon.
A1] of the parta comprislrig the opener are preferably made 01' metal. thlls atfording o. deVlce which can be readily stefllized and which is highly efflcient for its intended 1 111 088.
Ha.ving thus described my invention, I- claim: In an ampule opener, a sheet metal body, sa.id body including an ampule engaglng porton, sa.id
ampule engaglng portlozi belng-arcuate in cross 5 sectlon at one end and merging into a. portion which is plane in cross section at the other end, v a collar surroundlng the ampule engaging portion at the outer end of the armate portion, an end portion Integra] wlth the body end extendlng ai; righi: angles to the amnule engaglng portion at the end havlng the flat crosssection, a. piercing member integral with the body ami projectlng from the end portion toward the opposlte end of the ampule engaging portion, said piercing member belng parallel to sa.id ampule engaglng portlon end. eomprislng a pointed 1'aortion and 8.1); enlarged base portion.
