Description

SHOPPING BAG Filed June 18, 1958 2, I 15 5. E @465. /O /10 2o 'ZO f a 1 5 34 n 18 i QOc Z2 '1 i I 5 v i 1 is i 56 4 1 B 36 11 i a INVENTOR BF/YJAM/N T4 5H500K TTORNEY Patented Jan. 7, 1941 NlTED Claims.
This invention relates to shopping bags.
An object of this invention is to provide a shopping bag which may be carried by the hand, and which is provided with a plurality of castors or 5 rollers at the bottom, whereby the bag may be rolled along the street when'the same is loaded and therefore becomes too heavy to be carried, provision being made to adjust the handles, whereby the handles may be elongated when rolling the shopping bag so that the bag will reach the ground, without it being necessary for the person rolling the bag to stoop over or bend down. 4
Another object of this invention is to provide a strong, rugged and durable shopping bag of the character described, which shall be easy to carry or roll along the sidewalk or street, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and yet practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention:
Fig. l is a front, elevational view of a shopping bag, embodying the invention, with parts broken away and in cross-section;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the shopping bag shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, l0 designates a shopping bag, embodying the invention. The bag may be made of flexible sheet material, such as leatherette, oilcloth, fabric, or any other suitable material. The same may be made from a single elongated sheet folded at the middle to form a front wall II and a rear wall It, stitched together at the sides by inturned seams l3 and I4.
At the inner surfaces of the upper ends of the walls H and H, are wide strips l'l, stitched thereto by parallel, horizontal lines of stitching l8, forming pockets in which are placed reinforcing sheets or strips I 9 of cardboard or the like sheet material. The upper edges of the front and rear walls and strips I! may be bound by tape, as at 85.
The bag is provided with a pair of flexible adjustable, similar handles or straps 26, one at the upper end of the front wall I l, and one at the upper end of the rear wall l2. One of said handles and its attachment to one of the walls of the bag will be described.
Extending through the upper end of the wall I l, the reinforcing member l9, and the inner strip H, is a grommet or eyelet 26 formed with a horizontal slot. Extending through the slot, into the inside of the bag, is one end 20a of the strap or handle 20, said end being fixed to strip ll, reinforcing member I8, and wall H by a rivet 20b. The portion of the strap 20, just above the grommet 26, is also attached to the strip ll, reinforcing memher It and wall H, by a second rivet 20c.
Attached to the front wall of the bag by a rivet 30 passing through said wall, the reinforcing memher is and strip ii, is a plate 32 formed with an eyelet 33, on which is pivotally carried a buckle 33a. The opposite end 36 of the strap 20 is attached in adjusted position to said buckle, said end of said strap being formed with a plurality of openings 31 to permit the strap to be lengthened or shortened. The other strap 20 is attached to the wall l2 in the same way as the first strap is attached to wall ll.
Within the bottom of the bag In is a fiat board or member 40 made of wood or any other suitable material. The ends of the board 40 are curved, inclined or beveled, as at 4i. The bottom portion d2 of the bag may be attached to the board 40 by nails 43, or any other suitable fastening means.
Means is provided for rolling the shopping bag along the street, particularly when the bag is full and too heavy to be carried. To this end, the board 40 is formed with a pair of spaced, vertical through openings 45. The upper ends of the openings 45 are enlarged, as at 46, to form a socket. At the bottom of each socket 46 is a washer 41.
Extending through each opening 45, and through the washer 41, is the stem 48 of a castor 49,'disposed below the bag. The upper end of the stem has a head 50. Interposed between the head 50 and the washer 41, and received on the stem 48, is a split collar 5|. The top of the socket 41 may be closed by a plate 52 fixed to the board in any suitable manner.
It will now be noted that the castors rotate about the stems 48 and support the shopping bag so that the bag may be rolled along the ground. When a person carries the bag, the handles 20 may be shortened, and when the bag is rolled along the ground, the handles may be lengthened by the strap adjustment, so that the castors will reach the ground, and the person rolling the bag along the ground will not have to stoop or over.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of Practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A shopping bag comprising a single elongated sheet of flexible material folded at the middle, the side edges of the folded portions being stitched together, a board within the bottom of the bag, a plurality of castors rotatably mounted on said board and passing through the bottom of the bag, and means on said board to cover the upper ends of said castors.
2. A shopping bag comprising a single elongated sheet of flexible material folded at the middle, the side edges of the folded portions being stitched together, a board within the bottom of the bag, a plurality of castors rotatably mounted on said board and passing through the bottom of the bag, means on said board to cover the upper ends of said castors, and an adjustable handle on said bag adapted to be lengthened or shortened.
3. A shopping bag comprising a single elons gated sheet of flexible material folded at the middle, the side edges of one of the folded portions being stitched to the side edges of the other folded portion, a board within the bottom of the bag, means for fixing the bottom of the bag to said board, said board being formed with a plurality of through openings, castors having stems extending into said openings, the upper ends of said openings being enlarged to form sockets, said stems having heads at their upper ends, split collars in said sockets, received on said stems and interposed between said heads and the bottoms bend of said sockets, and means attached to said board for covering the upper ends of said stems.
4. A shopping bag comprising a single elongated sheet of flexible material folded at the middle, the side edges of one of the folded portions being stitched to the side edges of the other folded portion, a board within the bottom of the bag, means for fixing the bottom of the bag to said board, said board being formed with a plurality of through openings, castors having stems extending into said openings, the upper ends of said openings being enlarged to form sockets, said stems having heads at their upper ends, split collars in said sockets, received on said stems and interposed between said heads and the bottoms of said sockets, means attached to said board for covering the upper ends of said stems, a strip stitched to the inner side of the upper end of each of said folded portions by parallel lines of stitching forming pockets, a reinforcing sheet member within each pocket, and a pair of adjustable strap handles at the upper ends of said folded portions of the bag, each handle being attached at one end to one of said folded portions, a buckle on said folded portion, the other end of said strap being formed with openings for engaging said buckle in various adjusted positions.
5. A shopping bag comprising a single elongated sheet of flexible material folded at the middle, the side edges of one of the folded portions being stitched to the side edges of the other folded portion, a board within the bottom of the bag, said board being formed with a plurality of through openings, castors having stems extending into said openings, the upper ends of said openings being enlarged to form sockets, said stems having heads at their upper ends, split collars in said sockets received on said stems and interposed between said heads and the bottoms of said sockets, means attached to said board for covering the upper ends of said stems, and a pair of strap handles at the upper ends of said folded portions of the bag, said strap handles being adjustable in length.
