One object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive power tool for cutting the putty from the sash. In its preferred form the invention includes a rolling carriage on which there is mounted an electric motor adaptedto. drivea rotary cutting tool. Means are pro- 7 vided for guiding the carriage in a direction parallel to the edge of the sash and for adjusting the depth of out which the cutting tool is to make. The entire unit is made as light as possible so as to be easily portable and provision is made for substituting tools of different sizesand shapes to take care of various conditions met with in the use of the invention.
Other objects and features of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawing and the following description and claims:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the complete apparatus applied to a portion of a window sash. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view thereof. Fig. 4 is an enlarged View partly in section of a portion of Fig. 2 showing the parts in a different position.
In the drawing there is shown a portion of a window sash having a pane of glass ll secured thereto by putty I2 in the usual manner. It is assumed that the sash has been removed from its frame and has been suitably supported in a horizontal position. A guide bar l3 having three parallel V-shaped guide grooves I4 is placed on the sash and is arranged parallel to the edge of the sash carrying the putty. Said guide bar is preferably sufficiently heavy so that it will rest on the sash with little danger of being moved during the cutting operation and may be as long as can be conveniently handled. A carriage frame member I5 is provided with a pairof wheels 16 rotatably mounted thereon by pivot screws 11. Said wheels are properly shaped and spaced to fit the outer guide grooves 14.
At the opposite end of the frame member l5 a'similar wheel 18 is mounted in a yoke 19 in turn mounted on a vertical stem 20; The stem 20 is freely slidable in anjupwardly extending yoke 2| forming part of the frame 15. The yoke I9 is guided by the sides of the yoke 2| to pre-' vent rotation thereof and the stem 20 1s provided with a lower. adjusting nut 22 and an upper adjusting nut 23 threadedlyj engaged therewith.
The upper nut 23 maybe locked by a wing nut 24.
A flange 25 formed on the lower end of a spacer sleeve 26 serves as a seat for a compression spring 21, the upper end of which abuts the yokev 2 l The spring 21 normally holds the parts in the PATENT oFFl-cE position shown in Fig. 4 in which the'upper end i of sleeve 26 is spaced from the yoke 2|. Mounted on the frame l5 there are an electric motor 28 and a shaft 29 journaled in bearings 3ll. The shaft 29 is driven by the motor through gears 3| and 32. A suitable cover, not shown, is provided for said gears. A rotary cutter 33 is provided with a hollow hub 34 which may he slipped over the end of the shaft 29 and which has a bayonet connection 35 with said shaft by means of which the cutter is retained on said shaft and rotated thereby. A guard, not shown,
may be supplied for the cutter to protect the hands of the operator.
A handle 36 is secured to the rear of the frame l5 and is provided with an electric switch 31 by means of which the motor 28 may be controlled. A cord 38 carries suitable electrical conductors for power supply to the motor and may be connected to any Well known form of outlet for such power.
In the use of the invention, the guide bar 13 is laid upon the sash and is properly spaced from the edge of the sash carrying the putty. The carriage is then placed on the guide bar with the wheels 16 and I8 running to the guide grooves 14. In this position the spring 21 holds therear end of the carriage l5 in an elevated position in which the upper end of the yoke 2| rests against the adjusting nut 23, as shown in Fig. 4. In this position the cutting tool 33 is held above the surface of the sash. The operator may then grasp the handle 36, start the motor'by operating switch 31 and press downwardly upon said handle. The downward pressure compresses spring 21 until the spacer bushing 26 engages the yoke 2|. The point at which this engagement occurs may be adjusted by means of the nut 22 so that the cutting tool 33 penetrates the putty to the proper depth. After the cutting tool enters the putty, the carriage may be moved along the guide bar by a steady downward and forward pressure, the downward component of the pressure maintaining the cut at the proper depth and the forward component advancing the carriage to advance the out along the edge of the sash, By this means the putty may be quickly severed from the sash so that the glass may be easily withdrawn.
The invention has been described in one of its preferred forms, the details of which may be varied without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. For example, the operation of the device is not 1imited to the removal of putty from a window sash in a horizontal position. By suitably supporting the guide bars I3 against a sash in its normal position the device may be used without removing the sash from its frame. The particular form of cutting tool shown herein is adapted to make a relatively narrow cut close to the edge of the sash. In some cases this form of cut is not desirable and other shapes and sizes of cutting tools may be supplied and may be easily interchanged by means of bayonet connections such as that shown herein.
The invention claimed is:
1. Apparatus for cutting dried putty from windows including a rigid guideway adapted to be placed against the sash of a window, a rolling carriage having wheels engaging said guideway and guided thereby in a substantially straight line; a motor carried by said carriage, and a rotary cutting tool rotated by said motor and.
adapted to cut the putty from said sash as said carriage is moved on said guideway.
2. Apparatus for cutting dried putty from windows including a guidebar having a plurality of parallel guide grooves, said guidebar being adapted to be placed against the sash of a window with said grooves extending parallel to the edge of the sash carrying the putty, a rolling carriage having wheels engaging said guide grooves and guided thereby, a motor carried by said carriage, and a rotary cutting tool rotated by said motor and adapted to cut the putty from said sash as said carriage is moved on said guideway.
3. In apparatus adapted for cutting putty from windows, the combination of a carriage movable along a sash, pivotal supporting means for one end of said carriage, yielding supporting means for the opposite end of said carriage, a motor on said carriage, a rotary cutter driven by said motor and mounted on said carriage at a point spaced from the pivotally mounted end, and a stop limiting the movement of said yielding means to gauge the depth of cut of said cutter.
4. In apparatus adapted for cutting putty from windows, the combination of a carriage movable along a sash, pivotal supporting means for one end of said carriage, yielding supporting means for the opposite end of said carriage, a motor on said carriage, a rotary cutter driven by said motor and mounted on said carriage at a point spaced from the pivotally mounted end, a stop limiting the movement of said yielding means to gauge the depth of cut of said cutter, and a guide member for guiding said carriage along said sash.
