Application February 4, 1938,'Serial No. 188,602
3 Claims.
I The invention relates to ladies beauty boxes which are designed to contain powders, cosmetics and bottle preparations utilized by women for personal beautifying purposes and which are 5 sometimes referred to as make-up bags.
The main object of the invention is to provide a ladys beauty box divided into convenient compartments for containing different forms of powders, cosmetics, etc., and which is also con- 10 structed with a novel means for supporting a plurality of bottles therein and which is adapted to automatically present'the bottles in an upright vertical position ready for use when the box'is in an open condition and which will cause 15 said bottles to assume a, position which will also be vertically upright when the cover is closed and the box is being carried.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ladys beauty box which may be placed before 3 a user on a table or any convenient fiat surface in an opened condition and employed by the user as a conveniently arranged make-up box.
Object objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter. 5 The invention consists in the novel features and parts and the combination of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying 30 drawings forming a part of this specification in which characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a ladys beauty box made in accordance with my inven- 5 tion and with the box shown in its opened state; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of Fig. 1, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the cover of the beauty box partially closed; and. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the cover of the beauty box in its completely closed position.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, it will be seen that-the beauty box is comprised 5 of the rectangular shaped box-like portion designated generally in Fig. 1 by the numeral l, and which is provided with a hinged cover portion indicated generally by the numeral 2. The box-like portion is formed with the side walls so 3, 4, 5 and 6 and the bottom wall 1. The side wall 6 is of greater width than the side wall 5 and the side walls 3 and 4 increase in width from the points of their joinder with side wall 5 to their points of joinder with the side wall 6 as is 55 clearly indicated in the drawings.
The cover portion} is similarly constructed so as to have a box-like shape and is provided with the side walls 8, 9, I0 and H and a top wall l2. The side wall II is of greater width than'the side wall 8 and the side walls 9 and 5 I!) increase in width from the points of their joinder with side wall 8 to their points of joinder with side wall H so that when said cover is in closed position the combined box-like portion and cover of the beauty box at one end will be of 10 greater width than at the other end.
The outer face of the side wall 5 of the boxlike portion l is provided with a leather handle l3 of any suitable construction and which may be suitably secured to said sidewall by leather loops, as indicated at M. The side wall 5 may also be provided with a suitable lock l5 which is adapted to cooperate with a latch I6 positioned on the outer surface of the side wall 8 of the cover portion 2.
On the entire interior face of the top wall l2 of the cover portion 2 is mounted a mirror [1.
The cover portion '2 is hingedly secured to the box-like portion l in any suitable manner. In the beauty box construction shown in the drawings "the cover portion is hingedly secured to the box-like portion by'reason of the pliable leather covering mountedj on theoutside of the beauty -box' continuing -a"s"the covering of the top wall l2' of the cover'portion and also by securing to the interior surface of side wall ll of the cover a cloth strip l8 whichis also secured to the interior surface of the side wall 6 of the box-like portion I.
The interior of the box-like portion I may be provided with partitions therein so that it will be divided into a plurality of compartments such as are indicated at I9, 20, 2|, and 22. Also the partitions surrounding compartment 22 may be so constructed that a removable tray 23 may be positioned and supported in said compartment.
The compartment l9, formed in the box-like portion I, is separated from the other compartments by a partition 24 which extends across the entire width of the box-like portion. The ends of the partition 24 are adapted to be received and positioned in grooves 25 provided in supporting strips 26 and 21 which are mounted in the box-like portion adjacent to the side walls 3 and 4 thereof.
Hingedly secured in any suitable manner to the partition 24 is a box member 29 which is divided into a plurality of compartments adapted to receive and support therein the bottles indicated at 3B. The box member 29 is adapted, when the bottles 30 are in place with respect thereto, to normally assume the position indicated in Figures 1 and 2, and thus position the said bottles in an upright or vertical position. However, when the cover portion 2 is forced downwardly to a closed position the interior surface of the top wall l2 which is covered with the mirror ll will contact with the tops of said bottles 30 and will cause said bottles and said box member 29 to swing to a horizontal position as indicated in Figures 3 and 4 and to cause the bottles 30 to assume a position as indicatedyin Figure 4.
It will be noted that when the cover portion 2 of the beauty box is closed and the beauty box is being carried by means of the handle l3 or is placed in an upright position with the handle at the top, the bottles mounted in the box will always be maintained in an upright position. Also when the beauty box is opened up for use said bottles, due to the hinged construction of the box member 29, will again assume an upright or vertical position.
It is, of course, understood that the arrangement and size of the compartments such as 20, 2| and 24 may be varied and also the arrangement and size of the compartments in the box member 29 may also be changed, and the invention is not intended to be restricted to the exact form and arrangement shown in the drawings. Also the manner of hingedly connecting the cover portion 2 to the box-like portion l and for hingedly connecting the box-like member 29 may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and the invention should not be restricted in these respects. The principal feature of my invention consists in the manner in which the box-like member is hingedly positioned in the box-like portion I so that the bottles 3|] will be caused to assume an upright vertical position when the beauty box is being carried or when it isopened up for use.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A ladys beauty box, comprising a box-like structure provided with a partition therein dividing the interior thereof into compartments, a cover for said box-like structure hingedly secured thereto, and a box-like member secured to said partition by a hinge connection at the adjacent upper edges of said partition and said member whereby said member is gravitationally caused to be maintained in an upright vertical position in one of said compartments when the cover of the box-like structure is in an open position and to be swung into a substantially horizontal position and at right angles to the compartment by being engaged by the cover when said cover is caused to be closed.
2.'A ladys beauty box, comprising a box-like structure provided with partitions therein which divide the interior thereof into a plurality of compartments one of which extends the entire width of the box-like structure, a box-like member hingedly secured to the partition which forms the last mentioned compartment by means of a hinge member at the adjacent upper edges of saidcompartment and said box-like member, said member being normally pendent in a vertical position in said compartment, a hinged cover for the box-like structure, said box-like member having a plurality of bottles supported therein in such manner that when the cover is forced to a closed position it will contact with the tops of said bottles and cause the same together with said box-like member to be swung into a horizontal position in said beauty box.
3. A ladys beauty box, comprising a box-like structure having the interior thereof divided by partitions into a plurality of compartments, a cover hingedly secured to said box-like structure, a box-like member pivotally supported in one of .said compartments by a hinge connecting h the upper adjacent edges of said one of said compartments and said member to cause the member to be pendent in an upright vertical position, said member having a plurality of bottles mounted therein, said box-like member and bottles being positioned in such a manner with respect to said cover that when said cover is forced closed it will contact the top of said bottles and cause the same and box-like member to be swung out of said compartment and to be positioned at substantially right angles to the same.
