washing machines of the type in which a clothes container or drum is mounted in a casing to move about a horizontal axis and has an axial loading door opening 'at one end alined with a door 15 opening in the casing, the later being closed by a door having an opening and closing movement,
and more specifically, the object is a door construction formed or provided with a passage or passages through which a fluid or liquid can, be 30 projected into the clothes container.
Theiluid or liquid may be steam, water with or without soapor solvent, a dry-cleaning solvent, rinsing water or solvent, and air.
The invention consists-in the novel features g5 and in the combinations and constructions here- 'inafter set forth and claimed. 7
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the 30 views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the type, of washing machine embodying this inventionwith the fluid supplying door in openposition.
Figure 2 is an outer face view, partly broken 35 away, showing the fluid chamber of the door. Figure 3 is an edge view looking downwardly, partly in section, of parts seen in Figure 2, the contiguous portion of the outer casing and inner cylinder being also shown.
l designates the outer washer casing, the upper portion of which is-usually semi-cylindrical. 2 designates the clothes container or perforated drum, which is mounted in the upper portion'of the casing to move about a "horizontal axis.
This movement may be oscillatory, rotary, or reversible rotary movement, that, is, a movement consisting of a plural number of revolutions first in onedirection and then in the other.
1 In machines of this type. the clothescontainer g or, drum is mounted on an axleat'one end thereof which is Journalled in suitable bearings in the rear wall of the casing, and the actuating movement is imparted to the axle from suitable actuating mechanism. The other end of the I drum'is provided with an axial loading door. opening alined with a door opening in the front wall 4 of the outer casing I. The" door opening in thecontainer is provided with a suitable door frame 3 and the door opening of the casing is I provided with a frame 5. Also, preferably the door frame 3 is provided with an annular flange 6 extending toward, and preferably, partly into the frame 5 Usually the end of the container or drum remote from that supported by the axle,
that is, the end of the container 2 overhanging m} in the casing I is supported on'suitable bearings onthe inner side of the front wall 4 of the easing. The bearings here illustrated consist of an outer bearing ring 1 secured to the frame 5 on the inner side thereof and arranged concentric 15 with and spaced from the periphery of the flange 6, and anti-friction bearings, asrollers, 8, between-the ring 1 and the periphery of the flange 6.
9 designates the door through which the interior of the container 2 is accessible for the go purpose of loading and unloading. The door has an opening and closing movement, and the feature of the invention is that a fluid or liquid can be supplied to the container or the interior of the casing through a passage or passages in g the door. In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, the door is provided with a series of passages or jet openings arranged to discharge into the interiorof the'container 2 and the fluid or liquid is supplied to said jet passage or passages through a feeder passage also formed in the door. As here illustrated, the door is provided with an annular'series of jet openings, and the feeder passage is annular or arcuate, and is com- 8 mon to'all of the jet openings or passages.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention,the door 9 consists of an outer annular frame and a central panel It usually of glass suitably [mounted in the frame, and the frame has an annular or cylindrical portionor flange H extending into the opening formed by the flange I of the container 2 or into the annular flange 6 of the frame of the door opening of the container 2. As the container 2-is moving about its axis,
the annular portion or flange ll preferablydoes not contact the flange 6 but a suitable clearance is left to permit a free movement of the drum about its axis. The door 9 is hinged to the frame I, and as here shown, the annular frame' thereof is provided with laterally extending hinge-leaves,
. l2 which are hinged by means of hinge-pins II to hinge-leaves I4 provided on the frame [of the door, opening in the front wall of-the casing I.
I5 designates a series of Jet openings or paspermit the opening and closing of sages here shown as formed in the ring 9 constituting a cover for a feed passage or header formed in the flange II, the jet openings being arranged to discharge into the container 2 through the door opening formed by the flange 6, the series being here illustrated as arcuate or annular. The fluid or liquid is supplied to the jet openings at the will of the operator through conduit means including a feed passage orheader formed in the door. to all the jet openings I5. The conduit means also includes a passage H tangential direction from the annular passage l6 lengthwise of one of the hinge-leaves i2 and'it communicates with a conduit l8 connected to a suitable source of supply, as a pipe 22 connected to a valve 20. The conduit i8 is connected to the door frame 9 in communication with the passage ii through a suitable coupling l9 located near the axis of the hinges. Preferably, the section of this conduit I8 adjacent the door is flexible to the door. The flow of fluid through the conduit I8 is controlled by a suitable valve mounted on the machine in any convenient location.
The jet openings l5 may be directed into the drum or container I at any desired angle gles most suitable to effect the washing, or treating of the articles in the container 2 while such articles are being tumbled by the movement of the container about its axis, and the direction and force of the jets may be such as to break up any rolling, balling or roping efiect of I the clothes, particularly when the drum is being rotated in one direction only.
The actuating mechanism is usually located in the lower part 2! of the casing.
As this general type of machine forms no partof this invention and is well-known, and further as the invention relates to the projecting of water through the loading door, it is thought that further description of the washing machine is unnecessary.
What I claim is:
1. In a washing machine of the type having an outer casing, and a container mounted to rotate about a horizontal axis in the casing and having an axial loading door opening in one end thereof and the casing having a alined with that of the container; thecombination of a door for the opening in the casing, the door having an opening and closing movement The header i6 is common extending in a general thereof extending" into the or anrinsing door opening and including an outer frame, and a panel supported by the frame, the frame being formed. with a passage arranged to discharge. into the container, and conduit means uid to said passage. 7
2. In a washing machine of the type having an outer casing, and a container mounted to rotate about a horizontal axis in the casing and having an axial loading door opening infone end thereof and the casing having a door openingfalined with that of the container; the combination of a door for the opening in the casing, the door having an opening and closing movement and having an annular portion on the inner side door opening of the for supplying liqcontainer, the door also having a passage in said annular portion arranged to discharge into the container, and conduit means for supplying a liquid to said passage.
3. In a washingmachine of the type having an outer casing, and a container .mounted torotate about a horizontal axis in the casing and having an axial loading door opening in one end thereof and the casing having a door opening alined with that of the container; the combination of a door for the opening in the casing, the
door having an opening and closing movement I and including an outerframe, and a panel supported by the frame, the frame having an annular portion extending into the opening of the container, the door having a transverse passage through said annular portion arranged to discharge into the container, .and conduit means for supplying va liquid to said passage.
4. In awashing machine of the type having an outer casing, and a container mounted to rotate about a horizontal axis in the casing and. having an axial loading door opening in one end thereof, the casing having a door opening alined with that of the container, the combination of a door, the door having an opening and closing movement and also closing the axial door opening of the container, the door being provided with means forming an annular conduit provided with jet openings at the margin of the inner face of the door arranged to discharge into the con-.
tainer through the loading door opening when the door closes both door openings, and conduit means for supplying a liquid to said annular conduit.
