Afro/Mins Patented Aug. 29, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CENTRIUGAL SEPARATOR PROVIDED WITH SPECIAL DISCHARGES Application July 24, 1935, serial No. 32,826 In Sweden September 1, 1934 1 Claim.
In order to take out from a centrifugal bowl a separated ingredient, such as` skim milk from a cream separator, it is known to use a paring or skimming device comprising a tube-like element 5 with its inlet opening in a direction approximately opposite to that of the rotation of the bowl and extending inward to a discharge conduit at or near the axis of rotation of ythe bowl. Part of the kinetic energy of the liquid is thereby transformed into pressure, which is transmitted to the pipe line. With such paring devices it has been difcult, without the use of complicated tightening devices, to obtain milk without foam. Substantially better results are obtained by making the paring device of a disc-shape, usually in the form of upper and lower discs between which are positioned curved wings providing a series of curved channels whose inlets ex-tend around the periphery of the paring device. When treating liquids that are easily contaminated, the paring device must be readily accessible for cleaning. .My improvement comprises a disc paring device of the character specified made of separable parts adapted to be held tightly together and capable of easy assemblage and disassemblage. A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of the upper part of a centrifugal separator embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
The paring device a is positioned in a bowl chamber b, which may be the separating space of the bowl, but which will usually be a special chamber into which one of the separated ingredients (e. g., skim milk) is discharged from the separating space of the bowl through channels not shown. The paring device comprises a lower part 3 provided with wings A covered by an upper part 5.
The lower part 3 is secured to or (preferably) integral with an upper central extension tube 8 and a lower central extension tube I0. Around tube 8 extends a casing 5 (enclosing a chamber I) having a depending annular flange 6G within which extends an upstanding annular extension of the upper par-t 5 of the parer. The channels 40 formed between the wings 4 continue up within the extension 50 and open into the chamber 1.
50 The upper part of the extension tube 8 is threaded to receive a nut I2, which may carry a liquid feed funnel II, from which liquid to be separated may be fed through tube 8, I 0 to the separating space of the bowl. Between the nut I2 and the topi wall of casing 6 may be. placed a packing I3, which prevents liquid from. leaking out of the system. Packing between the chamber 5 'I and the feed funnel II may be dispensed with if the pressure in chamber 'l is maintained higher than that in the funnel I I, since any liquid leaking from` chamber 1 into the funnel I I is fed again to the separator. If', however, a lower pressure prel0 vails in the chamber 'I than in funnel II, sealing is required to prevent leakage.
To avoid the use of sealing means between casing 6 and the upper part of the paring disc, the annular flange of the casing 6 extends down l5 through the top wall of the chamber b' and contacts with, and engages a shoulder on, the upwardly extending member 5I) of the part 5 of the paring device, whereby all liquid leaking out of chamber 1 is carried into chamber b` and thence 20 back into the paring device.
After removal of the cover plate I5 of the bowl chamber and the unscrewing of the funnel Il from the feed tube, the latter, and with it the paring device and the casing B may be lifted out 25 and the separable parts thereof readily cleaned.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
In a centrifugal separator, the combination with a revoluble bowl chamber, of a non-revolublc 30 central feed tube extending therethrough, a paring device comprising a lower paring disc member in tight relation with the feed tube and a separate upper paring disc member having an exterior annular shoulder, the bowl chamber en- 35 closing the paring device, a separate casing enclosing a receiving chamber above the bowl chamber, there being a liquid outflow passage between the discs of the paring device communicating with the receiving chamber, the inner wall of said out- 40 iiow passage being formed by the feed tube, said casing having a depending annular flange extending toward and into the bowl chamber and engaging the shoulder on the outside of the upper paring disc member, and means to clamp the 45 upper paring disc member between the flange of the casing and `the lowery paring disc member, whereby the parts may be readily assembled and disassembled and any leakage from the receiving chamber will be carried inside said flange into the 50 bowl chamber.
