IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR EXHIBITING GEMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,626, dated May 20, 1879; application filed February 4, 187 9.
To all whom it may concern:
,Be it known that I, LEoN P. JEANNE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ear-Ring-Diamond Exhibitors, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a side view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, the ear-wire being removed. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for exhibiting diamonds and other stones to purchasers in such a way that they can judge of their effects when worn, and which shall be simple in construct-ion and convenient in use, being adjustable to various sizes of stones.
The invention consists in the combination of the clamp formed in two parts, hinged to each other at their bases, and provided with notched arms or claws, the spring, the lug, and the ear wire or hook with each other, and in the lug provided with a number of notches to receive the eye of the ear wire or hook, in combination with the upper part of the clamp and with the said ear wire or hook, as hereinafter fully described.
A is a clamp, which is made in two parts hinged to each other at their bases, and held together or closed by a spring, 0, attached to one of the said parts and bearing against the other part.
Upon the forward ends of the parts A B of the clamp are formed notched arms or claws to receive and hold the stone. Upon the upper side of the part A is formed a lug, D, which is made long and has a number of notches formed in it to receive the eye of the ear wire or hook E, so that the said ear-wire E may be adjusted forward or back according as a heavier or lighter stone is to be exhibited, so as to balance the said stone and keep the device in proper position. With this device the diamond can be conveniently held and examined, and can be suspended from an ear to show its effect when worn.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The improved device for exhibiting diamonds and other precious stones, consisting of the two jaws A B, hinged together at their bases and provided with notched arms on their forward ends, and the spring 0, when constructed substantially as herein shown and l described.
2. The combination of the clamp formed in two parts, A B, hinged to each other at their bases and provided with the notched arms or claws, the spring 0, the lug D, and the ear wire or hook E with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The lug D, provided with a number of notches to receive the eye of the ear wire or hook E, in combination with the upper part of the clamp A B and with the said ear wire or hook E, substantially as herein shown and described.
