Description

Patented Mar. 14, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3Clalms.
This invention relates to combs and is particularly adapted for use upon combs of the so-called rat-tail type, although i-t may be applied to other forms of combs as well.
l In the conventional rat-tail type of comb there is a comb body with a so-called rat-tail extending longitudinally from the back of the comb in alignment with the back of the comb. This rat-tail is useful in parting locksof tangled orthick hair. 10 When the body of the comb is used to comb the separated locks it is frequently grasped by the rat-tail. However, as the rat-tail is relatively thin and is smooth and straight it is diicult to firmly grasp the comb by the rat-tail. Consell quently, it is frequently dropped.
It is an object of this invention to provide a comb such as a rat-tail comb with suitable grip means advantageously located so that the comb may be conveniently grasped without danger of go its slipping or being dropped.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifest in the following description and specically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accom- 25 panying drawing for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of oneform of rat-tail comb embodying the invention;
Fig'. 2 is a horizontal section taken substan- 30 tially upon the line 2--2 upon Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the comb shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of a rat-tail comb embodying an alternative form of the 35 invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the comb as illustrated in Fig. 1 has the conventional comb body consisting of a series of teeth I integral with a comb back I I which has an integral rat-tail I2 extending longitudinally in alignment with back I I from one end thereof. At the end of the series of teeth I0 and on the underside of the rat-tail I2, there is formed 45 a finger-receiving opening I3 and if desired an additional linger-receiving opening I4 may be formed adjacent thereto. Either or both of the finger-receiving openings may be open at the bottom as indicated at I5. The, topof the comb o in the preferred form o f construction is corrugated as at I6 and the sides of the rat-tail may have recesses or depressions such as those indicated at I1. These finger-receiving openings and corrugations are located adjacent the juncture between the rat-tail I 2 and the body of the comb I I with the result that the person using the comb may insert one or more ngers through the linger-receiving openings I3 and I4. y In this way it is possible to firmly grasp the comb when using either the rat-tail I2 or the body of the comb. There is no danger of the comb slipping or being dropped.
In Fig. 1an alternative form of construction is disclosed wherein the teeth are indicated at Illa 10 and the back of the comb is indicated at Ila. The rat-tail I2@ corresponds in size and shape to the conventional rat-tail. The finger-receiving opening I3a is conveniently located adjacent the juncture between the rat-tail I2a and the body l5 of the comb enabling the operator or user to insert one finger therethrough to prevent the comb slipping or beingv accidentally dropped while being used.
From the above-described construction, it will be appreciated that a. comb is provided wherein adequate provision is made to conveniently and firmly grasp the comb while using it avoiding any danger of slipping or dropping.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A ngergrip comb comprising a comb, there being an extension extending longitudinally from onel end of the back of the comb forming a rattail, there being one or more linger-receiving openings extending transversely of the comb on the underside of the rat-tail forming extension adjacent the juncture of the extension and the comb.
2. A ngergrip comb comprising a comb, there being an extension extending longitudinally from one end of the back of the comb forming a rattail, there being one or more finger-receiving and encircling openings extending transversely of the comb on the underside of the rat-tail forming extension, said openings being arranged adjacent the juncture of the extension and the comb and at the lateral end of the series of comb teeth.
3. A fngergrip comb comprising a comb, there being an extension extending longitudinally from the end of the back of the comb forming a rattail, there being corrugations formed on the ex- Itension at the juncture between the extension and.' the comb.
