Description
lG. G. ADLER msm COLUMN Filed Dec. 17, 1957 ATTORNEYS.
Patented Jan. 10, 1939 UNTE STATS PATENT orifice 1 Claim.
This invention aims to provide a novel construction of column, adapted to be used either in connection with walls, or independently of the walls, a simple but useful combination of 5 U-shaped and L-shaped blocks being provided, the construction being such that openings .are formed in the column through which the concrete iilling of the column may pass, to join itself With the walls. The invention aims, further,
l to provide a column which may be built up of concrete, without using forms.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present in- :3 vention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrange ment of parts and in the details of construction 30 hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
25 In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 shows in perspective, a column constructed in accordance with the invention, assembled with rectangularly disposed walls;
Fig. 2l is a cross section on the line 2-2 of .'50 Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4.- is a perspective view showing one of the blocks;
35 Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing another of the blocks;
Fig. 6 is a perspective View showing a modified form of column, wherein the U-shaped blocks alone are used.
4o In carrying out the invention as shown in Figs.
l to 5, there is provided a column I made up oi courses. Each course comprises a U-shaped block 2, including a body 3 and side anges 4; and L-shaped blocks 5 each comprising a body f 6 and a side flange l. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 one side iiange d of the U-shaped block 2 is disposed opposite to the side iiange i of the L- shaped block E, and the other side iiange i of the U-shaped block 2 projecting toward the body 50 6 of the L-shaped block 5, to form an opening 8.
The construction above referred to is carried out throughout the height of the block, adjoining courses being turned through an arc of 90 degrees with respect to the aXis of the column, the openings 8 on one side of the column being 5 disposed at right angles to the openings 8 on another side of the column, so that the concrete nlling lli of the column may pass through the openings and be received as shown at in the openings i4 of hollow walls H and l2, arranged 10 at right angles to each other and cooperating with the column I, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
A reenforcement 9 may be located in the concrete lling i0.
It will be seen that the invention comprises l5 a novel means whereby a column may be built up of the blocks shown in Figs. 4 and 5, each course having the opening 8, whereby the concrete may interlock, as at 26, with the walls H and l2, and bind the walls to the column. 20
The column and the walls may be laid up without the use of forms, and forms are not needed in the pouring of the concrete.
In Fig. 6, parts hereinbefore described have been designated by numerals already used with the suiix a. In this form of the invention, the U-shaped blocks 2a alone are used, adjoining courses being turned through an are of 90 degrees, so that the lines 25 of abutment between the arms lia of the blocks are not in the same vertical line. Its construction is useful when the column is located otherwise than in connection with the walls ll and i2. 'Ihe concrete filling shown at 9 of course is used in the form shown in Fig. 6.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A column comprising superposed courses each made up of a U-shaped block and an L-shaped block, the U-shaped block comprising a body and 40 side flanges, the L-shaped block comprising a body and a side flange, one side flange of the U-shaped block being disposed opposite to the side ange of the L-shaped block, and the other side flange oi the 'cl-shaped block projecting to- 45 ward the body of the L-shaped block, to form an opening through which concrete can flow, and a concrete filling in the column.
