Description

Nov. 22, 1938. w w fl- PACKAGING CONTAINER Filed May 27, 1936 Patented Nov, 22, 1938 NITED ST'ATE S PATENT .QFFICE 2,137,745 PACKAGING con-mums William P. White, Glencoe, 11]., assignor to White Cap Company, Chicago. 111., a corporation of Delaware This invention relates to'packaging and pertains particularly to a packaging container ,for material inthe form of a strip or strand.
For purposes oi-retail sale and convenient use,
L. 'it is desirable to package various strip or strand material in small packets. A familiar example of such material is surgical adhesive'tape. Varl-- one such materials are subject to deterioration, drying, or other undesirable efiects if left in contact with air for a suflicient length oi time.
An object of the present invention is to provide a package for such kinds "ofmaterial which will be of proper character and convenient size for household use, which will eilectively protect 5. and maintain the material in properiorm and.
disposal and facilitate the dispensing or removal of portions oi it from time to time for use, which will eflectlvely protect the material in the package from contamination, and which will exclude air from contact with the material while it remains in the dealer's stock and until the package is opened for use.
Further objects are to provide such a package which may be opened and closed with facility, and which may be effectively re-sealed to prevent ingress of air. r
Other and further objects and advantages or the invention will-be pointed out or indicated hereinafter, or will be apparent upon its em- 0 ployment in use."
For purpose of aiding in an explanation of the invention I show in the drawlngiorming a part or this specification certain forms iii which it may be embodied. It is to'be understood, how- ;5 ever, that these are presented merely for purpose of illustration and are not to be construed in any fashion calculated to limit the appended claims short of the, true and most comprehenslve scope of the invention in the art.
In said drawing, Fig. l is a perspective view of one portion oi the package;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view or the other or complementary portion of the package;
' be formed conveniently and economically of sheet metal, or other material having the proper rigidity. strength and imperviousness. The cover member is formed with a cup portion having an end panel M, and a. rim portion having a flange I5 extending outwardly from the wall portion, and an axially extending flange, portion i6 approximately concentric with the wall portion Iii. The axial flange portion to has its margin curled to provide a smooth outwardly extending reinforcing bead ll.
The holder element i0 is formed with a hub portion having an approximately cylindrical wall l8 and end panel I9, and with a closure portion 20 extending outwardly from the wall It and terminating as an axially extending flange it with its margin curled into a smooth outwardly extending bead 22. The holder flange 2! is adapted to fit closely but removablywithin the cover flange l6, and when so disposed, the hub wall ill is concentric with the cover wall l2. The hub portion may be originally formed separately from the closure. portion 20 and attached thereto by soldering, or it may be formed integrally therewith as illustrated in Fig. 4.
Upon the cover flange i5 is dispomd a fiat ring sealing gasket 24, which gasket is adherently affixed to said flange It. The gasket 24 preferably i5 Fig. 3 is a sectional elevational view of the assembled package; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a modified form oi one of'the elements...
The nature of the invention will be most quicki0 ly ascertained from a detailed description oi the embodiments illustrated in the drawing.
The package container comprises a pair of mating or nesting elementsit and ii. I will refer to the element It as theholder element and the element II as the cover element. These may is formed oi rubber which is only partially vulcanized, so. that it retains a slight amount of plasticity, and itmay be adherently aiiixed to flange l5 by heating the flange and pressing the gasket against it, thereby causing the contacting surface of the gasket to melt slightly and adhere strongly to the flange. The closure portion 20 is adapted to seat upon the opposite side otthe gasket 24, the gasket thus providing an hermetic seal between the two elements I0 and l I.
The strip or strand material 25 is wound upon the hub member, which thus iormsa sortof reel or spool that supports the material in a disposal approximately concentric with the hub and with the cover member when the two elements are assembled. The closure portion 2d forms 9. lateral support for the coil of strip material. It is obvious that a corresponding lateral support at. the other side of the coil may be provided. by attaching a concentric disk or flange to the hub end portion i9.
In the original assembling of the package, after the strip material has been wound on the holder element, the two elements it and l l are placed in the receiver of a suitable vacuum sealing apparatus, the air is withdrawn from the receiver so I a holder cover element, and the package is sealed by pressing the holder element into the cover element until suitable close engagement is made with the sealing gasket 24. The elements are held in this relationship until after air is re-admitted to the receiver, whereupon the external atmospheric pressure holds the two elements closely together and maintains the hermetic seal. Thus the contained material is maintained out 01' contact with air until the package is opened.
The package is opened by inserting a suitable thin object, such as a small coin, between the overlapping beads l1 and 22 and prying them slightly apart. This lifts the closure portion 20 from the gasket 24 and admits air to the package, whereupon the holder member may be removed entirely from the cover member and the desired amount of the strip,material 25 unwound from the coil. Then the package may be reclosed, to effectively house and protect the strip material, by inserting the holder member into the cover member and pressing them together until the closure portion 20 engages the gasket 24, the gasket meanwhile having remained afflxed to the flange Hi. The flt of the axial flanges i6 and 2| holds the parts thus assembled. It will be observed that the holder element holds the material in the package out of contact with the peripheral wall of the cover element and the sealing gasket, thus preventing its adhering to them or being deformed by contact therewith.
What I claim is:
1. A packaging device comprising, in combination, a cover element having peripheral and end walls forming a receptacle which is open at one end and closed at the other and having an outwardly extending flange around its open end and an axially extending peripheral flange at the.
outer edge of said outwardly extending flange. element adapted to form a closure for said receptacle, said holder element having a closure portion fltting within the peripheral flange and overlying the outwardly extending flange ot the cover element and also overlapping the margin of the peripheral flange, and a hub portion spaced inwardly from said peripheral wall and extending substantially the entire depth of said receptacle for positioning material therein, and a sealing element arranged to be compressed between the closure portion of the holder element and the outwardly extending flange oi the cover element to form a seal about the open end of said receptacle at a distance from the hub.
2. A packaging device comprising, in combina tion, a cover element having peripheral and end walls forming a receptacle which is open at one end and closed at the other and having an outwardly extending flange around its open end and an axially extending peripheral flange at the outer edge of said outwardly extending flangef said axially extending peripheral flange having an outwardly turned bead at its margin, a holder element adapted to form a closure for said receptacle, said holder element having a closure portion overlying said outwardly extending flange and terminating in an axially extending flange adapted to telescope within the peripheral flange of the cover element, said axially extending flange of the holder element having an outwardly turned bead at its margin in position to overlap said first mentioned bead, said holder element having also a hub portion spaced inwardly from the peripheral wall of the cover element and extending substantially the entire depth of said receptacle, and a sealing gasket mixed to the outwardly extending flange oi. the cover element in position to be compressed between the same and the closure portion of the holder element to form a seal about the open. end of the receptacle at a distance from the hub.
