Description

Get 4, 1938. E. NUDELMAN PENCIL SHARPENER Filed Nov. 11, 1956 ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 4, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in pad assemblies'being particularly directed to a pad carrying a separable pencil sharpener.
Broadly, it is an object of this invention to provide a pad assembly incorporating a support and a separable pencil sharpener carried therein, the support and pencil sharpener being so formed and disposed with respect to one another as to provide for ready removal of the pencil sharpener from the pad, while at the same time providing for service of the pencil sharpener as a pencil support for use when the sharpener is mounted on the pad.
These and other advantages, capabilities and features of the invention will appear from the subjoined detailed description of one specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device 20 showing my invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation partially in section taken along lines 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the sharpener support applied in my invention.
5 Figure 4 is a front elevation, partially in section, showing a modified construction of the device incorporating my invention.
Referring to the reference characters in the drawing, numeral represents a pad having sheets perforated along line H and backed at its end by an adhesive tape or the like 12, and at its bottom by a cardboard or like material l3. An aperture I4 is punched through the pad sheets and cardboard and in such aperture there is disposed sharpener support unit 15.
As shown in Figure 3, the sharpener support is comprised of a stamping or casting having base 16, about the periphery of which there are formed upstanding projections ll serving as piercing elements, and centrally of which there is formed upstanding tubular element 18, the interior of which is threaded as at [9. In assembly, as shown in Figure 3, the support unit is disposed so that its base 16 rests against the face 5 of cardboard 13 with its piercing projections H In assembly, as shown in Figure 2, the sharpener unit is mounted in the support 15 by the meshing of the exterior threads of the projecting member thereof with the internal threads I9 of the tube, thus permitting for ready insertion or removal of the sharpener unit from the support.
In the modification shown in Figure 4, there is applied, in conjunction with the support unit 15, a cup-shaped receptacle 26 having an aperture 10 21 through which tube l8 of the support may pass, said tube having a peripheral flange 28 at its upper extremity serving, when flattened or spun, to clamp against the peripheral surface of the cup adjacent its aperture 21, for locking the 15 cup and support. As indicated, this cup 26 not only is decorative, but serves as a receptacle for shavings from pencils when they are subjected to sharpening.
As is obvious, not only does the sharpener serve 20 in its normal use as applied to a pencil, which may be inserted therein, but in the assembly as shown, such sharpener serves to normally support a pencil in position for use when and as desired.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a base, an open ended tubular member fastened at one end to the rear of the base, a cup member disposed at the front of the base and locked there to by the other end of the tubular member, and a pencil sharpener separably mounted in said tubular member, said cup being in such proximity to the pencil sharpener as to serve to collect shavings discharged therefrom. 4O
2. In a device of the character described, a base, an open ended tubular member fastened at one end to the rear of the base, a cup member disposed at the front of the base and locked thereto by the other end of the tubular member, and a pencil sharpener having an angularly disposed integral projection at one end thereof for separably mounting the sharpener in said tubular member, said cup being in such proximity to the pencil sharpener as to serve to collect shavings discharged therefrom.
