9' Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in hair waving or curling devices. It relates particularly to the type of hair curling devices provided with means for gripping the hair ends which are then rolled in a number of convolutions to form a curl, and further provided with a clamp to hold the hair in its curled condition after the completion of the rolling operation.
An. object of the present invention is to provide v a device of the character described of greatly simplified construction, whereby the members may be readily and quickly assembled, which will be economical to manufacture and at the same time operate with a high degree of efficiency for the purposes intended.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described having improved clamping means.
Still another object of my invention is to prov vide a device of the character described having novel clamp attaching means.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements,
and arrangement of parts which will be exemplifled in the construction hereinafter described, and ofwhich the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible embodiments of this invention,

Referring now in detail to the drawing, therev is disclosed in Figs. 1 to 6 a hair curling device embodying the various features of my invention, said device comprising a hair rolling element 20 which may be of hollow tubular constructionr and provided with a suitable hair gripping member 2| pivotally connected to the rolling element 20 by a novel connecting means to be described in greater detail as the description proceeds. The
When it is desired to roll the hair into one or more convolutions to form a curl, the finger pieces 22 and 23 are compressed against the action of the spring 25 to raise the gripping member 2| to the dotted line or ineffective position 26, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The ends of the hair are then placed on the rolling element and the nger pieces 22 and 23 released to allow the member 2| to grip the hair to hold the same against the element 20. The hair is then rolled or coiled on said element 20. After this has been done it is necessary to provide means for binding and maintaining the hair in place.
By my invention I have provided a novel binding member which at the same time serves to pivotally connect the gripping member 2| to the rolling element 20. The means by which this is accomplished: may be described as follows:
There is disclosed in Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawing a suitable hair clamp 30 which may be of the bail type, as shown, having portions extending along the rolling element 20 and around the end thereof, the open ends being pivotally engaged in the element 2|! and the member 2| in the following manner:
It will be noted that the members 20 and 2| are each provided with a pair of overlapping ears 3|, 3| adjacent the finger pieces 22 and 23. Said ears 3| are provided with aligned annular apertures 35 of a size slightly larger than the crosssection of said clamp 30 and adapted to receive a portion adjacent the ends 32 for free rotation therein.
Similarly the ears 3|' are provided with aligned annular apertures 35 of a size slightly larger than the cross-section of said clamp 30 and adapted to receive a portion adjacent the end 32 for free rotation therein. The ends 32 and 32? are provided with flattened and ared portions36, 36 of-a width greater than the diameter of the apertures 35, 35". It will be noted that the said apertures 35, 35 are provided with horizontally extending slottedportions of slightly greater widthithanthe thickness of the flattenedportions 36, 36" and of lesser width than the diameter of the apertures 35, 35.
Thegconstruction as described above is so` der signed as to permit the ends 32, 32 of the portion adjacent the clamp 30 to be inserted into the apertures 35, 35', to pivotally connect the gripping member 2l to the rolling element 20, only when said clamp is in a position which is substantially at right angles to the said meinbers 2|] and 2|. When the clamp 30 has thus been pivotally mounted, it is rotated to a position as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing, which is the operative position for rolling or curling the hair, or it may be rotated to the full line position which is the operative position for clamping the rolled hair to retain the same in rolled condition.
Bg the construction as described, it is also seen that the ends 32, 32 will be retained in position within the apertures 35, 35 until it is desired to disassemble the device, at which time it is necessary to position the clamp 30 at right angles to the rolling element 2l] and withdraw the ends 32, 32.
Any suitable means may be employed for locking the clamp 30 in position, such as a pair of aligned circumferential notches 40 in the euter end of the rolling element 20, adapted tc receive the closed end portion of the clamp 30. Due to the resilient construction of the clamp 30 it may be designed to snap into position and held in the notches 40.
In Fig. '7 of the drawing there is disclosed a modified form of clamp 4I pivotally mounted in the same manner as the clamp 3|] but having its cle-sed end portion extended beyond the length of the rolling element 2l) and looped to' ferm a handle 42 tov facilitate the lockingl and unlocking of said clamp 4I from the notches 40.
In using hair curling -devices of the character described, it is the customary practice to treat or wet the hair with some solution before winding said hair on the rolling member. Since the rolling operation is performed by hand, the fingers of the operator must of necessity become moist from handling the moist hair. Due to this fact it is oftentimes difficult to obtain a good grip on the curling device due te the fact that the moisture tends to allow the curling device to slip out of the fingers. To overcome this disadvantage, I have provided suitable means on the finger pieces 22 and 23 to prevent slipping when in use. In Figs. 1, 2, 5, 6 of the drawing there is shown one such means which comprises a plurality of perforations 64 suitably positioned in the finger pieces 22 and 23.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made cf the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and.
not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a tubular member adapted to have hair rolled thereon, a second member cooperating with said tubular member, and clamping means for holding the roll of hair in place, said last named means comprising a wire member having deformed ends, adapted to pass through mating means cut through the walls of both of said members for pivotally mounting said second member on sai-d tubular member, said deformed ends being withdrawable through said mating means only upon aligning said deformed ends with said mating means, to disassemble said deidce.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a tubular member adapted to have hair rolled thereon, a second member cooperating with said tubular member, resilient means between the members to urge said second member into pressing engagement with said tubular member to grip the hair preparatory to rolling the same, and clamping means for holding the rcll of hair in place, said last named means comprising a wire member having deformed ends, adapted to pass through mating means cut through the walls of both of said members for pivotally mounting said second member on said tubular member, said wire member ends being deformed before assembly of said device.
3. A device of the character described comprising means adapted to have hair rolled therecn, means for gripping the hair preparatory to rolling, and means for holding the rolled hair in place, said last named means comprising a wire member having deformed ends, adapted to pass through mating means cut through the walls of said hair gripping. and said hair rolling means for pivotally mounting said hair grippng means on said hair rolling means, said deformed ends being withdrawable through said mating means only upon aligning sai-d deformed ends with said mating means, to disassemble said device.
4. A device of the character described comprising a member adapted to have hair rolled thereon, a second member adapted to grip the hair preparatory to rolling, said members having pairs of overlapping ears between the ends thereof provided with aligned apertures therein, and means for holding the rolled hair in place, said last named means comprising a loop of wirelike material, each end of said loop being deformed and adapted to pass through mating means cut through said overlapping ears to pivotally connect the said members, sai-d deformed ends being withdrawable through said mating means only upon aligning said deformed ends with said mating means, to disassemble said device.
5. A device of the character described comprising a member adapted to have hair rolled thereon, a second member adapted to grip the hair preparatory to rolling, said members having pairs of overlapping ears between the ends thereof provided with aligned annular apertures therein, each of said apertures having a horizontal slot of greater length than the diameter of said aperture and disposed substantially across the center thereof, and means for holding the rolled hair in place, said last named means comprising a loop of wire of substantially annular cross-section, each end of said wire being flattened to pass through said aligned apertures to pivotally connect the said members, the said flattened ends preventing disengagement of said wire from said apertures except when said fiattened ends are in mating alignment with said horizontal slots.
6, A device of the character deseribed comprising a member adapted to have hair rolled thereon, a second member adapted to grip the hair preparatory to rolling, said members having pairs of overlapping ears between the ends thereof, said rst named member having notches in the end thereof most remote from said ears and means for holding the rolled hair in place, said last named means comprising a clamping bail having a looped end adapted to cooperate with said notches and the free ends being deformed and adapted to be received in mating apertures in said overlapping ears to pivotally connect the said members.
7. A device of the character described comprising a member adapted to have hair rolled thereon, a second member adapted to grip the hair preparatory to rolling, said members having pairs of overlapping ears between the ends thereof, said first named member having notches in the end thereof most remote from said ears and means for holding the rolled hair in place, said last named means comprising a clamping bail having a looped end adapted to extend beyond said hair rolling member when caused to engage said notches, to form a handle for said clamping bail, the free ends of said bail being deformed and adapted to be inserted through mating apertures in said overlapping ears to pivotally connect the said members.

A device of the character described comprising a tubular member adapted to have hair rolled thereon, a second member adapted to grip the hair preparatory to rolling, each of said members havin-g finger grip portions at one end thereof provided with means to prevent slipping When said portions are contacted by the fingers of the operator, and means for ho'lding the rolled hair in said rolled con-dition, said last named means including means integral therewith for pivotally interconnecting said members, said last named integral means comprising a Wire member having deformed ends and adapted to pass through mating apertures in said tubular and said second members.
9. A device of the character described comprising a member adapted to have hair rolled thereon, a second member adapted to grip the hair preparatory to rolling, said members having pairs of overlapping ears between the ends thereof, each of said apertures having a hori- Zontal slot of greater' length than the diameter of said aperture and -disposed substantially across the center thereof, and means for holding the rolled hair in place, said last named means comprising a loop of Wire of substantially annular cross-section, each end of said Wire being attened to' pass through said aligned apertures to pivotally connect the said members, the said flattened ends preventing disengagement of said Wire from said apertures except when said flattened ends are in mating alignment With said horizontal slots, said flattened ends being disposed in spaced relationship to each other.
