Description
June 21, 1938.. P. M. THORN CLOSURE FOR RECEPTACLES Fil ed Aug. 10, 1936 ATTORNEY Patented June 21, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 9 Claims.
This invention relates 'to a closure such as cans, bottles and the like.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple closure having a peripheral opening which will maintain a tight closure under all conditions.
I It is a further object to provide a device of the character described which will be inexpensive in manufacture and reliable in operation.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises an article of manufacture possessing .the features. properties, and the relation of elements which will be exemplified in the article hereinafter described and the scope of the applicationbf which will be indicated in the claims..
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference should be had to the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in
' which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view partly in section of a device embodying this invention in the closed position.
Figure thereof.
Figures 3 and 4 are similar to Figures 1 and 2, save that the closure is in the open position.
Figures 5, 6, '7, and 8 are similar to. Figures 2 is a central longitudinal section 3 1, 2, 3, and 4, but disclosing a somewhat modified construction.
In the drawing the numeral l0 designates a base having a circumferential wall H and an end wall l2.' The end wall I2 is substantially flat and is- 35 provided with an opening IS in its peripheral portion. A cap i4 is mounted for rotation upon the base in any practical manner, as for example, as illustrated, there is provided upon the circumferential wall of the base a bead l5 fitting into a 40 mating bead i6 upon the cap. The cap has an end wall il parallel to the end wall l2 and spaced from it, and also provided with an opening iii of size, shape and position corresponding to the opening l3. Between the end walls l2 and i1,
5 there is mounted a sectoral shutter l9 arranged for rotation about the axis of the base, as for example, by being provided with a depression 20 fitting into a depression 2| in. the base. This shutter is also provided with an opening 22 cor- 50' responding in size, shape and position to the opening IS. A pin 23 is carried by the end wall ll. of the cap it in position to engage the edges of the sectoral shutter when the cap is rotated upon the base, but by reason of the fact that the cap in '55 the form illustrated in Figure 1 occupies only about 240 of the circumference, a lost motion is provided between the pin and the shutter so that the pin will not engage the shutter to turn it until the cap has been rotated far enough to bring the opening l8 of the cap and the opening 5 base caused by the cap is localized in the area 15 immediately surrounding the opening to afford a tight joint. In order further to provide against the possibility of tilting of the shutter, the end wall [2 has a raised portion 26 at the axis.
Means are also provided for limiting the motion 20 of the shutter to that required for the closure which may take the form of a pin 21 extending upwardly from the base to engage the edges of the shutter and so positioned that the shutter is free to move between its open and closed position 25 but cannot move further.
The form of the invention as illustrated in Figures 5, 6, '1, and 8, is similar to that shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4, except that as here illustrated, the openings l3a, 22a and Illa are of considerably 30 less circumferential extent than in the form first shown, and there is provided on the periphery of the device an annular raised portion 28 to prevent tilting of the shutter to one side of the other as the cap is rotated.
In this construction, moreover, instead of providing the washer 24a to eifect a tight joint between the base and the shutter there is provided a raised portion 29 completely surrounding the 40 opening I311 to take the pressure between the shutter and the base in a manner to afford a tight closure.
Since certain changes may bemade in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention, which as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
