This invention relates to new and useful im.- provements in a note book pad.
The invention has for an object the construction of a note book pad which is characterized by 5 the provision of a plurality of sheets each with a line of perforations near the top dividing 01T a support area, and a cover secured near its top edge upon the front side of said support area and extending over the top and down the back and up the front of said pad and arranged to have its free edge engage-able beneath the said top edge for constituting the closed position of the pad.
Still further the invention proposes the provision of a transverse strip extended across the support area of the pad and arranged in a manner so as to hold the top edge of the cover of the pad spaced from the front face of the pad in a manner so that the bottom edge of the cover may readily engage therebeneath. U Still further the invention also proposes an arrangement wherein staples may be used for the purpose of holding the transverse strip and the sheets of the pad in a unit.
Still further the invention also contemplates an arrangement whereby the cover and the pad are secured together along certain areas so that the cover is held upon the pad at the top thereof.
As another object or" this invention it is proposed to provide an arrangement wherein the cover is detachable from the pad in a particular manner, whereby rell pad sheets may be used on the same cover.
Still further the invention proposes a novel arrangement of a transverse sheet attached upon 35 the inner face of the top of the cover and associated with meats by which the pad may be ree leasably held in position.
Still further the invention also proposes a novel arrangement of the upper edge of the cover in a o manner so that a portion thereof is bent under and secured upon the pad to form a bend which is disposed downwards under which the lower edge of the cover may be readily inserted.
Still further the invention proposes the con- 45 struction of an article as mentioned which is simple and din-able and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, refer- 50 ence will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particuarly set forth.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional View taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional View similar to Fig. 3 but illustrating a modied forni of the device.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 'l-l' of Fig. 6.
The note book pad according to this invention comprises a plurality of sheets l having lines of perforations il near the top thereof dividing 01T an area l2' by which the sheets may be supported in pad formation. A spacer strip i3 is extended across the front side of the support area l2, and a staple I4 engages through the strip i3 and the support area of the pad for holding the sheets and the strip in a unit. A cover i is associated with the sheets in a novel manner and this cover comprises a top portion i5a which is attached by glue I5 or the like upon the front side of the strip i3. The top portion ia continues into a portion lh which extends across the top of the proportioned that the bottoni edge of the strip I3 is slightly above the edge of the portion a to prom vide an area into which the free edge of the portion 15 may engage. The junction between the portions I5b and I5c is secured upon the top edge of the pad by glue, cement or other material Il.
The lines of perforations il constitute an important feature of this invention in that then the leaves of the pad may be easily detached along these lines without disturbing the support area l2 and the relation of the cover upon this support area.
A further feature of the invention is the arrangement of a cover in such a manner that it is constructed of one piece of material and in which the free edges of the portions ia and |52 are adapted to coact with each other for holding the cover in the closed position. In Fig. 2 the cover is shown in the open position so that the relation of the lines of perforations I I to the strip I3 may be readily understood. The staple I4 is of a type having a pair of arms which are extended through the material of the support area I2 and the ends thereof bent outwards so as to anchor the staple in position.
In Figs. 6 and '7 another embodiment of the invention has been disclosed wherein provision is made for the disconnection of the pad from the cover so that the cover may be provided with refills after the pad is all used up. According to this form of the invention the note book pad comprises a plurality of sheets IIJ having lines of perforations II near the top thereof dividing off a support area I2 by which the sheets may be supported. A strip of material I3 is secured at its edges I3a upon the rear edges of the front portion I5a of the cover. The device is provided with a cover I5 having the parts previously described with respect to the previous form, which parts may be recognized in that they are numbered with the same reference numerals. A staple I4 is engaged through the support area I2 of the pad and comprises a front portion connecting with a pair of arms, and ends I4 of the arms being bent outwards at the back oi the pad for the purpose of holding the staple in position. The arrangement is such that the arms are slightly longer than the thickness of the support area so as to cause the front portion to stand away from the iront of the pad to accommodate a support strip I3' as hereinafter further described.`
The support strip I3 is formed with a pair of slots I3D extended in Afrom the bottom edge and an eyelet 20 is rotatively mounted upon the inner end of each of the slots |31. Each of the eyelets 2@ have projections 2d by which they may be rotated at desired. Each of the eyelets 2D is formed with a radial slot 2GEL adapted to align with the slot I3b in one position of rotation of the eyelet for the purpose of allowing passage of the arms of the staple I4.
In Fig. 7 the eyelets 20 are shown in a position in which the pad is firmly attached upon the support strip I3. If it is desired to disconnect the pad from the cover the projections 20 should be turned to positions in which the slots '2UEL align withthe slots I3". Then the cover and support strip may be moved relatively to the pad so that the arms oi the staple disengage through the slots I3b.
The pads I5 are provided with adhesive material I1 upon the upper back edges thereof. This adhesive I'l is of a type adapted to be wetted for it to become operative. It is proposed that when a rei-lll pad is. engaged within the cover the adhesive I7 is wetted and in this manner attached to the junction between the sides IEb and I5c of the cover. Fig. 6 shows the note book pad in operative position. After the leaves of the pad have been exhausted the pad may be removed by rst tearing loose the adhesive I'i from the support area of the pad and then the projections 26' of the eyelets are exposed so as. to be movable as before described to allow the disconnection of the staple from the support strip I3.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as dened in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent isz- 1. A note book pad, comprising a plurality of sheets having lines of perforations near the top dividing ofi support areas, and a cover for the pad having a top portion secured upon the front side of said support area, and continuing across the top of the pad down the back of the pad across the bottom of the pad and up the front of the pad terminating in an edge adapted to engage beneath the edge of the top portion for holding the cover in the closed position, and a spacer strip attached upon the front of the support area for the purpose of holding the front portion of the cover slightly spaced so that the edge of the bottom portion may be engaged therebeneath.
2. A note book pad, comprising a plurality of sheets having lines. of perforations near the top dividing off support areas, and a cover for the pad having a top portion secured upon the front side of said support area, and continuing across the top of the pad down the back of the pad across the bottom of the pad and up the front of the pad terminating in an edge adapted to engage beneath the edge of the top portion for holding the cover in the closed position, and a spacer strip attached upon the front of the support area for the purpose of holding the front portion of the cover slightly spaced so that the edge of the bottom portion may be engaged therebeneath, the bottom area of the spacer strip being arranged slightly above the free edge of the top portion of the cover to provide an area into which the edge of the bottom portion of the cover may engage.

A note book pad, comprising a plurality of sheets having lines of perforations near the top dividing off support areas, and a cover for the pad having a top portion secured upon the front side of said support area, and continuing across the top of the pad down the back of the pad across the bottom of the pad and up the front of the pad terminating in an edge adapted to engage beneath the edge of the top portion for holding the cover in the closed position, and a spacer strip attached upon the front of the support area for the purpose of holding the front portion of the cover slightly spaced so that the edge of the bottom portion may be engaged therebeneath, the bottom area of the spacer strip being arranged slightly above the free edge of the top portion of the cover to provide an area into which the edge of the bottom portion of the cover may engage, and the rear face of the top portion of the cover being adhesively connected with the front face of said spacer strip.

A note book pad, comprising a plurality of sheets having lines of perforations near the top dividing off support areas, and a cover for the pad having a top portion secured upon the front side of said support area and continuing across the top of the pad down the back of the pad across the bottom of the pad and up the front of the pad terminating in an edge adapted to engage beneath the edge of the top portion for holding the cover in the closed position, and a spacer strip attached upon the front of the support area for the purpose of holding the front portion of the cover slightly spaced so that the edge of the bottom portion may be engaged therebeneath, the bottom area of the spacer strip being arranged slightly above the free edge of the top portion of the cover to provide an area into which the edge of the bottom portion of the cover may engage, and the rear face of the top portion of the cover being adhesively connected with the front face of said spacer strip, and the upper corner of the back of the support area being adhesively connected with the junction of the top of the back portions of said cover.

A note book pad, comprising a plurality of sheets having lines of perforations near the top dividing oi support areas, and a cover for the pad having a top portion secured upon the front side of said support area, and continuing across the top of the pad down the back of the pad across the bottom of the pad and up the front of the pad terminating in an edge adapted to engage beneath the edge of the top portion for holding the cover in the closed position, and -a spacer strip attached upon the front of the support area for the purpose of holding the front portion of the cover slightly spaced so that the edge of the bottom portion may be engaged therebeneath, the bottom area of the spacer strip being arranged slightly above the free edge of the top portion of the cover to provide an area into which the edge of the bottom portion of the cover may engage, and the rear face of the top portion of the cover being adhesively connected with the front face of said spacer strip, and a staple engaging through the spacer strip and the support area of the cover for holding these parts in-a unit.
