s. J. ELLENBURG ROLL TAPE CONTAINER mixed Aug. 22, 1934 ATTRNS.
Patented Feb. 8, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ROLL TAPE CONTAINER Application August 22, 1934, Serial No. 740,913
4 Claims.
This invention relates to adhesive and other roll tape containers from which such tapes are projected as desired for use, and the objects of the invention are to provide improvements in such containers whereby a variety of and/or widths of tapes and other adhesive devices may be instantly presented for use, to thereby avoid the present requirement of keeping on hand several containers and the great loss of time in changing from one to the other as the work of repairing a lot of file papers, manuscripts or the like, is undertaken.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved device as seen from the front end.
Fig. 2 is a plan view with the upper wall omitted to show the arrangement of adhesive or other papers or strips within.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 2 as seen from the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
With further reference to the drawing the device comprises a container preferably made of thin sheet metal taking the general form of a pointed heart when seen in plan as in Fig. 2 and comprising a top wall I, bottom 2, and side walls 3 which terminate in a slot I! at the apex of the heart. These walls are permanently secured together (after filling the container) as by soldering, crimping, or the use of small ears 4 from one part projecting through small slots in the adjacent part and bent over, and within the forward part of the container or converging sides is a pair of extra curved walls or guides 5 firmly secured in place. These extra walls are spaced slightly from the outer walls of the con- 5 tainer so as to form slight channels through which the gummed tape is drawn, are joined at their forward ends to form an apex 6 extending within the slot formed by the side walls, and at their rearward ends are curved inwardly as at 4 1 to readily guide strips of paper or other material respectively from rolls 8, 9 arranged within the container, through the channels or guides and out of the apex of the device as at 8 and 9'.
As one of the objects is to provide a container 45 which will dispense various widths of tapes, roll 8 is shown full width of the container height, while roll 9 is only about half width, also the materials of the rolls may be of different kinds, the wide one say as of cloth or opaque paper,
50 and the narrow one of transparent or translucent pellicule, so that they may be used, the first, say on back of a torn piece of printed matter or manuscript, and the second, over the same tear but on the face of the sheet. To keep the nar- 55 row roll in best position for unrolling I may provide a partition 28 to support the narrow roll and a wall H to separate both rolls. The rolls of tape may, if desired, be of different sizes or lengths, as well as of dilierent quality or kind, if desired, gummed or plain, also with or without printing.
To further adapt the container to the work of repairing and/or binding file documents, I provide a supply of gummed eyelets l2 in a tube I3 positioned forward of the tape rolls 8 and 9 and 1 between the curved guide walls 5. These eyelets l2 are of paper, cloth or the like, and are resiliently forced outwardly by a light coiled spring I4 to stop against an inwardly turned marginal flange l5 at the outer open end of the tube, and 15 which flange extends but about two-thirds around the edge of the tube so as to have a free space toward the forward edge of the container and through which space the eyelets may be slipped out one at a time with the finger. 20
The opposite side walls 3 are each formed with a finger slot is through which the tapes may be urged outward through the slot I! at the apex of the container, and to facilitate withdrawing of the tapes by contact with the tip of the finger, 25 walls 5 are each provided with an elongated flat boss 5, which are positioned close to walls 3 and within the outline of slots l6, and against which bosses the tapes are pressed with the finger and then moved forward. After drawing out the de- 30 sired length it is torn off against one of the side walls which is left with a sharp corner for this purpose.
The elongated boss 5 makes it much easier to slide the tape out with the finger as it permits of a large free space for guiding the tape yet keeps the finger contact elevated close to the outer Wall of the container and thereby also avoids danger of cutting the finger on the edges of the slot I6.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A roll tape package comprising a box formed at one side with an apex with a slot in the apex,
a plurality of separate rolls of tape in said box with the free ends of the tapes extending out of the apex, and means within the box guiding the tapes to said apex for dispensing therefrom and arranged to maintain the tapes separated substantially to the point of emergence.
2. A roll tape package comprising a box formed at one side with an apex with a slot in the apex,
a plurality of separate rolls of tape in said box with the free ends of the tapes extending out of the apex, means within the box guiding the tapes separately'to said apex for dispensing therefrom, the rolls of tape ithin the box being of dissimilar width with the widest substantiallfequal to the space between the walls of the box, and a partition in the box supporting the narrower roll of tape in position. 7
3. A roll tape paokage'comprising a box substantially of heart shape when viewed in plan and formed with an apex at the small end of the heart a slot in the apex, a pluralityr of separate rolls of tape in said box with the free ends of the tapes extending out of the apexj means within the box guiding the tapes separately to said apex for dispensing therefrom, and said box provided with finger slots in opposite sides adjacent said apex.
4. A device for dispensing tape comprising a sheet metal container adaptedflm hold a roll of tape and having a slot through which the tape extends, a finger slot in; the side wall of the container to expose the tape for movement by the finger, a guiding wall within the container under the finger slot guiding the tape close to said side veall, said guiding wall provided with outwardly raised boss aligned with but 33f smaller area than said finger slot and falling within the outline of the slot and against which boss the tape is pressed by the fingerrlwhen moving the tape, all so that the finger will be kept substantially out of the slot when moving the tape.
