Patented Mar. 23, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a new and useful post card and has for its object to provide a completely sealed letter card on the back of which can be printed a picture and which can be easily opened without destroying any portion of the picture. A further object of my invention is to provide as much writing space as possible by adding an additional leaf within the card when folded and so arranged as not to interfere with the folding and sealing of the card. The card and the additional leaf can be written upon and the card then completely sealed and the card has a small elongated opening along a line of perforations, or scoring,'into which an instrument,
such as a letter opener, can be inserted and run around the perforations, or scoring, and the card opened without destroying any portion of the picture on the back of the card.
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing,-
Figure 1 is a plan view of the letter card in the open position ready to be written upon.
Figure 2 is a plan View of the letter card after being cut open.
Figure 3 is a plan View of the letter card when Sealed.
Figure 4 is an edge View of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 1, showing the extra leaf projecting from its pocket.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Figure 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts through- 4,0 out the several views thereof, I designates the card having a line of fold 2 in the center. The lower portion of the card below the folding line 2 is gummed along the edge at 3, and the upper portion above said folding line 2 is perforated,
45 or scored at 4. At one side of the perforations (Cl. 22B-92.1)
4 and beginning at the folding line 2 is a small elongated opening 5. The lower half oi the card is provided with a depression 6 in which is permanently secured at its upper end an extra leaf, or sheet, 1 adapted to t Within the depression 5 6 which permits the upper half of the card to be iiush with the gummed edge 3 when the card is sealed, as shown in Figure 6 of the drawing. This extra sheet 'I affords additional Writing surface and at the same time does not interfere 10 with the sealing of the card. After the writing on the card andthe extra sheet is completed the gummed surface 3 is moistened and the card folded on the line 2 and sealed, as shown in Figures 3 and 6 of the drawing, and when it is 15 desired to open the card, an instrument, such as a letter opener, is inserted in the opening 5 and run around the perforations 4 leaving the edge of the card I beyond the perforations 4 remaining on the gummed edge 3 of the card, and as the 20 picture is on the back of the card it will not be mutilated or in any manner disturbed when the card is opened, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. The extra sheejg 1 can be folded back so it can be used for Writing on both sides. 25
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A letter card comprising a sheet of paper having a line of fold in the center thereof, .the half of said sheet on one side of said line of fold hav- 30 ing perforations around its edge and a small elongated opening adjacent said line of fold and in line with said perforations, and the other half of said sheet having its edge gummed on a line with said perforations of the other half, and a 35 depression between said gummed edges, and an additional sheet of paper secured at its upper edge to the letter card and in that part of the depression next to the fold line of said letter card, so that said additional sheet of paper may be folded back and used for an additional writing surface, said additional sheet being adapted to lie within said depression when the letter card is sealed.
